September 2014
Dear Members and Friends of the St. Peters
Family:

On July 24-25 several of us from St. Peters
had the privilege of attending the 2014
Convocation of the North American
Lutheran Church (the national convocation
of our church) at The Citadel in Charleston,
South Carolina. Pastors, lay members, and
guests brought the total in attendance to
677 folks from all around North America
and the world.

This was without a doubt one of the most
joyful and spiritual church gatherings I have
been to in a long time. These were orthodox
Lutherans who worshiped enthusiastically
and reveled in doing mission, ministry, and
service in the Lords name. This is a church
that takes great joy in partnering with a
variety of already established Christian
organizations to do Gods work all around
the world. We may be a denomination that
is relatively small in numbers, but it is
amazing how much ministry our church has
been able to accomplish in such a short
amount of time.

You can go to the North American Lutheran
Church website (thenalc.org) and click on
2014 Convocation video near the top of the
screen and then click on the blue link to
watch recorded video of the events in
Charleston. Recordings of all sessions are
available. You will want to choose the
events on July 24 and 25.

Next years NALC Convocation will be held
August 13-14 at the Dallas/Fort Worth
Airport Hyatt Hotel. I hope that some of you
will begin now to make plans to attend. It
will be well worth your time and effort.

I assure you that you will come away
knowing that the North American Lutheran
Church is a Spirit-led, forward moving
Church that seeks to live out Christs
commands to make disciples and be a
servant church. You will come away joyful
and thankful for being part of such a church
as this.

In joyful partnership with you in Christs
service,

Pastor Leon A. Rawl

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the
uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do
good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for
themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19 (ESV)

The world teaches us that we should strive to accumulate as much as we possibly can - more money,
bigger houses, better cars, newer electronic devices, cooler toys... The list goes on and on. But often we
find that the more material riches we accumulate, the less satisfied we are.

A survey by Boston College entitled, "Joys and Dilemma of Wealth," discovered what the writer of 1
Timothy already knew - money does not buy happiness. The study found that the ultra wealthy (those
with fortunes of at least $25 million) are among the most miserable people in the world!

It turns out that happiness has more to do with how you spend your money than it does with how much
money you have. Experts consulted in the Boston College survey found that people get more happiness
by spending money on others than they do by spending it on themselves. You can read more of this
article at http://abcnews.go.com/Business/concerns-super-rich-wealth-bring-happiness/story?
id=13167578.

What brings true happiness, according to the first letter to Timothy, is not being materially rich but being
rich in good works. God, the One in whom we hope, has graciously provided us with everything we
need to enjoy this life. But the joy of these blessings cannot be found in using them to pursue ones own
pleasure. The joy of Gods abundant blessings can only be found in giving them away. It is by
generously and happily sharing our riches with others, that we become truly wealthy.

OUR CALL TO MISSION

Q: Is God calling me to serve others in my
community and abroad?
A: YES!!!
In the Great Commission, Jesus, our
Teacher, Savior, and Lord tells His disciples to Go
therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you. (Matthew
28:19)
As baptized believers of Jesus Christ, we
are all His disciples. And as His disciples, every
one of us is called, authorized, and commissioned
to share the gospel of Jesus Christ both locally and
globally. That means YOU!

Q: Why does God call me to go and m a k e
disciples anyway?
A: So that all people will know His love!
In the letter to the Romans, St. Paul, the
greatest Christian missionary of all time, tells us
that, ...everyone who calls on the name of the
Lord will be saved. How then will they call on him
in whom they have not believed? And how are they
to believe in him of whom they have never heard?
And how are they to hear without someone
preaching? And how are they to preach unless
they are sent? (Romans 10:13-15a)
We, who are Christs disciples, are also His
apostles. Jesus calls and sends each of us out into
the world to proclaim His gospel in both word and
deed. He does this so that all people in the world
will have a chance to hear the good news, be
saved, and become His disciples too.

Q: Do I really have to go somewhere to make
disciples?
A: YES!
Throughout His ministry, Jesus was on the
move. Just look at how much going and coming
Jesus does in the first few chapters of St. Marks
Gospel! Jesus always seems to be traveling
somewhere, meeting and serving people along the
way. Jesus ministry shows us that our God is not
static. He is dynamic and constantly moving in our
midst.
And because we are His disciples, Jesus
calls us to come and follow Him (Matthew 4:19,)
wherever He leads us. You may be called to travel
halfway across the world to share Gods love with
people in another country, or you may be called
simply to go to your telephone to share Gods love
with a friend whos going through a tough time.
Jesus doesnt call every disciple to go far, but He
does expect that we follow wherever He leads!

Q: Cant I just stay home and just write a check
instead?
A: You could, but...
Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would
come after me, let him deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me. For whoever would save
his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my
sake will find it. (Matthew 16:24-25)
Discipleship is more than coming to
worship, studying scriptures, and giving money to
the church. These things are vitally important, but
disciples who are willing to follow Jesus wherever
He leads will strengthen their faith and discover the
joys of an even fuller and more abundant life.
When we trust our Lord enough to follow Him
anywhere, entrusting our whole life to His leading,
then we are truly alive in Christ!

Q: Are you ready to trust Jesus
and follow wherever He leads?
A: ...
The first disciples dropped everything to
follow Jesus (Matthew 4:19-23). They had no idea
what it meant to fish for men, but they had faith
enough to follow Jesus and find out!
Opportunities for mission abound in our
community and around the world. Whatever your
interests and abilities, God has a place for you to
love and serve others in His name. Think and pray
about where God may be calling you...

Listen... What do you hear?...

Could God be calling you to love and serve our neighbors in another country?

Come to a
Mission Trip Interest Meeting
Wednesday, Sept. 3
rd
from 7:30-8:30 pm
in the Office Conference Room.

Meet others who may be hearing Gods call, and together we will begin discerning where and how
He might be calling us to serve in His name.

S.P.Y. NEWSSeptember 2014
St. Peters Youth
All St. Peters youth and visitors are invited to attend youth events.
Travis McLeod, Youth Director
tmcleod@stpeterslex.com 803-603-3152

Giving Tree In the PLC, just outside the kitchen, there is a tree and leaves taped to the wall.
The leaves have dollar amounts printed on them. If you would like to help the youth raise funds to
renovate the youth room, you can take a leaf and place it into the provided envelope along with
cash or check matching the leafs amount. You then simply place the envelope into the offering
plate at your convenience. Thank you to all willing and able to help
