    Ifwearetrulyseriousandgenuineaboutcreatingaspaceforprogressiveandproactivediscourseinour
    community,wehavetobecommittedtoauthenticityanddeterminedtocreateanappropriateplatformtodo
    so,andnotsuccumbtoorencouragesensationalism,rhetoric,impatienceorinsensitivitytothevarietyof
    voicesandneedswithinourcommunity.Ibelievetheadministrationsrequesttopostpone,inconsideration
    forinvitingexpertpaneliststoprovidesubstance,tangiblepathwaysandpropercontextwasreasonableand
    speakstothisgoal.Italsospeakstotheadministrationscommitmenttothiseffort.Myrequesttorefrain
    fromparticipatinginwhatIfeltwouldbeabasicmediatacticcalledracebaiting(asanunfairandmisguided
    attempttoprovokeparticipants),washonoredandsupportedbythisadministration.Thiswasnotanaffront
    toanyofthepanelists,asMr.Flahertysuggestedmultiplestimes,whichinandofitselfisdivisive.

    IfMr.Flahertywastrulycommittedtothewellbeingofourcommunityandtrulyconcernedaboutracism,he
    wouldhaverespectedandunderstoodtheconcernsexpressedduringourconversationofAugust20about
    thepotentialnegativeimpactofconductingadialogaboutracismoutofcontextofthelargerissuesfacing
    usasacommunityandsociety,andwithoutexpertinputregardingtangiblepathwaysthatleadtoequitable
    outcomes.BasedsolelyoninflammatorystatementsinanemailsentbyMr.Flahertytwodaysbeforethe
    discussion,withreasonableconcern,theadministrationsimplyaskedMr.Flahertytopostponethe
    discussiontoalaterdatewiththeassurancethatthepanelwouldincludethosewhocouldeffectively
    addresssystemicracismandtrulymovethedialogforward.Instead,Mr.Flahertymadethedecisionto
    continuethedialognotonlywithoutregardforthecomplexityandsensitivenatureofthisissue,butalso
    tooktheopportunitytostatepubliclythatthereasonfortherequestforpostponementwasduesolelytoa
    fearofbacklashfromtheaudience.

    Yes,communitywideconversationanddiscourseiscentraltothesuccessofanyinitiativeaimedto
    positivelyimpactanycommunityatlarge.However,ifwearetoprogressasapeopleandasacommunity,
    itmustbebasedonpracticalmethodology.Thistypeofmediacoverage,whichomitstheprevalenceof
    systemicracismisharmfultothecommunityandstiflesthepublicsunderstandingofitsunderlyingcauses.
    Withoutmakingthedistinctionsbetweeninternal,interpersonal,institutionalandstructuralracism,and
    withoutconsideringhegemonyasoneofthemostprevalentyetleasttalkedaboutaspectsofhowracismis
    maintained(andincludesotheraspectsofoppressionsuchasclass,gender,sexuality),thepublicisonce
    againleftwithafalseviewofhowthecompoundingeffectsofracismimpactsourexperienceofit.Thereis
    simplynobenefitinrehashingolddialogwithoutthegenuineintenttoincorporatedialogthatfocuseson
    actionandimpact.

    Thedecisiontopostponeissound.AmherstTogetherwillnotbeasideshowtoappeasesensationalism.
    Wehaverealworktodo,thatwilltakepatienceandcollaborativeeffort.Itistrulytimetoexpandour
    understandingofALLformsofoppressionandcultivatedialogthatreachesthecoreofhumanityandbegs
    thequestion,whoarewereallyandhowarewegoingtolivetogether?Amherstasacommunityisin
    desperateneedofhealingandcomingtogether.Amherstisalsoanamazingcommunitywiththe
    resources,passionandabilitytodojustthat.Imhappytoparticipateindialogwherethosegoalsare
    shared.

    Fromapersonalstandpoint,theparticipantsonthepaneltodayalreadyknowthattheyhavemyfullrespect
    andloveandthatIwilldoeverythingIcantocreatesafespacesforexpressionandcollaboration.
