Smart Driver Course
The AARP Smart Driver
Course is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept.

Senior Center. Take the
course, improve your reflexes

There are lots of new activities and
programs at the Romulus Senior
Center so many ways to get involved.
We have diabetic education, healthy
eating, Juicing for Better Health, a
walking club, chair exercise, Name
that Tune, karaoke, an inspiration
class, Bible study, pokeno, bingo,
bunco, Club One, a Red Hatters Club,
a movie club, knitting, crocheting, a
jewelry class, a ceramics class, a
culinary class, a painting class and
trips to the Detroit Institute of Arts.
We have Wii video games (bowling,
boxing, golf, baseball and tennis), a
Silver Sneakers program, hot meals
served daily, Meals on Wheels, an
AARP driving class, commodities
Focus Hope and liquid nutrition
distribution, a monthly birthday bash,
monthly luncheons, shopping trips to
Meijer and Walmart, trips to Tiger
games, lunch out at a restaurant of
the month, Portofino boat rides, an
exercise room, manicures, haircuts,
transportation for scheduled medical
or doctor appointments, dialysis and
much more.
We have a beautiful Senior Center
and we are blessed to have the funding
to run all of these programs. Dont sit
at home bored when you could be here
enjoying yourself and interacting with
others, staying active and keeping
your mind strong. Our wonderful staff
loves serving our seniors and our

Celebrating Success!
Thanks to everyone who represented Romulus during the 2014
Downriver Senior Olympics. Congratulations to our medal
winners. Mickey Durham won a gold medal in the soccer kick,
silver in the softball throw and bronze in horseshoes and
shuffleboard. Sally Michalski won gold in pickle ball and baking
contest (pies). Bonnie Nowland earned gold in Frisbee throw and
soccer kick. Rosalie Green won gold in the chili cook-off. Goldie
Hoffman won gold in the softball throw. Stanley Michalski won
gold in pickle ball. Joseph Ozog won gold in euchre.

Juicing for Better Health
Romulus Senior Center Director Rose
Swidan will present another Juicing for
Better Health at 12:30 p.m. on Friday,
September 26, at the Romulus Senior
Center. Rose will demonstrate how to
turn fruit and other ingredients into a variety of drinks. Last months

Tigers on TV at the Senior Center
Fans of the Detroit Tigers can gather in front of the
television in the TV room near the main entrance of
the Romulus Senior Center during daytime weekday
games. This month, there is only one day game taking
place during Senior Center hours. Watch the Tigers
play the Chicago White Sox at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday,
September 24, on Fox Sports Detroit.

Join us for the monthly
Senior Center Birthday Bash
Bible Class on Mondays
A Bible class is offered at 11:30 a.m. Mondays
in September at the Romulus Senior Center.
The class discusses the life of Jesus Christ from
the book The Greatest Man, which is set up
chronologically from Christs birth to death. The
class is free and open to people of all religious
denominations. To register, see staff at the
Senior Center.
Inspiration Class on Wednesdays
The Rev. Rita Talley will inspire seniors during an
Inspiration Class from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept.
10 and 24, at the Romulus Senior Center. An ordained
minister, Rev. Talley serves as Associate Minister at
First Baptist Church of Romulus, under the leadership
of Pastor Charles P. Woolridge. She also is a member
of the Ministerial Alliance of Romulus. Rev. Talley has
been employed in the Romulus Community Schools for
nearly 30 years and is currently a lunch aide at Romulus
Middle School. To sign up for the class or get more

Senior Project FRESH
Seniors 60 and older can use coupons to purchase
Michigan-grown produce and nutrition at farmers
markets and roadside stands. Project FRESH is open to
seniors who meet low-income requirements and can get
to a local farmers market. Eligible older adults can use
coupons to purchase fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices and
honey from farmers markets and roadside stands.
Coupons are used like money at locations that accept
them. For more information, call (734) 727-2071. By
the way, a bus transports seniors from the Romulus
Senior Center to the Romulus Farmers Market at 11:30
a.m. Wednesdays. See staff for more details.
Celebrating a birthday in September? Visit the
Romulus Senior Center at Noon on Monday,
September 22, for the monthly Birthday Bash.
There will be a bingo potluck before the
presentation of a birthday cake and the singing
of Happy Birthday. Thanks to Wayne County
Commissioner Kevin McNamara, who provided
last months birthday cake for the seniors.

Craft Sale Space Available
The Romulus DDA Pumpkin Festival is scheduled for
Friday, Sept. 19; Saturday, Sept. 20; and Sunday, Sept.
21. The Romulus Senior Center will host several events
and activities, including a craft area where crafters can
sell their goods. Table rental is $25 for the weekend.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. Sunday. To reserve space or get more information,

New Programs and Activities for Seniors

Public Library, seniors had their pick of
older VHS-style movies at the Romulus

supplies last.
Name That Tune
Romulus seniors are invited to play
Name That Tune, a favorite game
show of people throughout the
years. Basically, staff of the
Romulus Senior Center will play
music and contestants guess the
name of the song. Songs will vary
from the 1940s one week to the
1950s another week and so on. The
fun gets under way at 12:30 Tuesdays in September. Please
sign up at the Senior Center.
Memory Lane
Discuss your favorite memories
during Sit and Reminisce, a
program scheduled for the first
and last Thursday of the month, September 4 and 25, from 1
to 2 p.m. Senior Services Director Rose Swidan said memory
games help strengthen the mind. Questions may be as basic
as What is your favorite memory of the 1960s. Everyone is
invited.
Karaoke Hour
Enjoy singing? The Romulus
Senior Center is now the place
to be. The Karaoke Hour is
scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on
Monday, September 15.
Karaoke is a form of interactive entertainment in which
people sing along with recorded music using a microphone.
The music is typically a well-known popular song. The words

Coming Soon:
Paint and Pour
Thirty people will have the opportunity
to paint and enjoy wine, beer and
hors doeuvres while raising money to
support programs at the Romulus
Senior Center. Paint and Pour,
organized by the Regency Health Care
Center, is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m.
Wednesday, October 29. Cassie Norman
of Regency said the evening would be
limited to 30 people to maintain more of
an intimate setting. More information
will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Bowling League
A Seniors Bowling League is
being formed at Romulus
Lanes. Bowlers would compete
at 10 a.m. Mondays, starting
September 8. Teams could include men and women. The fee

Pumpkin Festival and
Health Programming
a Focus This Month
Happy September to all of our Seniors!
One of the most anticipated events of the year in
our City is the annual DDA Pumpkin Festival on
September 19th to 21st. This is a great
opportunity to get out and spend time with
neighbors and friends. Events like these are what
build the community for young and old alike. I
hope you get the chance to come enjoy the great
music, food and crafts. I am especially happy to
hear that the Romulus seniors will be decorating
the SMART buses for the Romulus Rotary Clubs
Parade of Lights on Friday, the 19th. Thank you,
too, for the support of the Senior Center to host
the Animal Shelter Bingo and food and garden
competitions again this year. It is a great
opportunity to showcase this excellent facility and
wonderful hospitality of your volunteers.
Ive noticed a trend in Senior Activities towards
encouraging more healthy and active lifestyles
over the last few months. This is so important to
me because we cant have a healthy city until we
take care of the health of our residents. Please
take advantage of some of these beneficial

Mark your calendar for Thursday, October 9 the
date of the annual Romulus Health and Wellness
Fair one of the biggest events of the year at the
Romulus Senior Center. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Health professionals and related vendors are invited
to participate. Last years fair drew hundreds of
area residents and dozens of vendors. The event
targets senior citizens, but is open to people of all
ages from Romulus and other communities. The
day will feature flu shots, blood pressure checks,
blood sugar screens, hearing-aid checks and so
much more. Vendors interested in participating can
contact Senior Center Director Rose Swidan at
(734) 955-4120 or rswidan@ci.romulus.mi.us. Table
space for the event is $100, plus a donation for the
raffle for seniors.

the Senior Center.
programs like the Healthy Eating groups and
exercise classes on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Visits to the Romulus Farmers Market also are a
great way to purchase those healthy fruits and
vegetables. Making positive lifestyle choices
isnt always easy, but with the support of Rose
and your fellow seniors, I know you can make a
change for the better.

Seniors Restaurant Club
heading to Johnnys Grill
The Romulus Senior Centers Restaurant Club
will enjoy lunch on Thursday, September 11, at
Johnnys Grill on the Lake in Belleville.
Participating seniors will leave the Senior Center
at 11 a.m. and travel by bus. There is a $2 charge
for the bus ride. Each diner will be responsible
for buying his or her
own lunch.
The Restaurant Club
started in February.
Buses have
transported seniors to
Cracker Barrel,
Romulus House, Fire
Mountain (twice), Leons, El Mexicano Bar &
Grill and Hibachi Grill.
Those interested need to sign up at the center or

Restaurant Club was suggested by seniors. If you
have a suggested restaurant for the club, please
tell the staff at the front desk of the center.

Seniors will travel to the Emagine Canton theater
on Wednesday, September 3, to see a movie. The
bus will leave the Romulus Senior Center at 11:30
a.m. Admission is $5 for seniors, plus $1 for the
round-trip bus ride. Sign up in advance at the front
desk of the Senior Center.
Motor City Casino trip Sept. 16
Romulus seniors are invited to
visit Motor City Casino on
Tuesday, September 16. A bus
leaves the Senior Center at 8:30
a.m. The cost is $10 per person.
The casino provides $25 in credit
upon arrival. Seats are limited.

Lunch and a Boat Cruise
Staff at the Romulus Senior Center is accepting
registrations for lunch at the Portofino restaurant
in Wyandotte and a boat cruise on the Detroit River
on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Seniors will leave the center
at 10:30 a.m. and travel by bus to the restaurant.
Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. After lunch,
seniors will go on a boat ride from 1 to 3 p.m. Seating
is limited and early registration is recommended.
The fee is $30 per person. To sign up, see Senior

Seniors Discovery Day at the
Toledo Zoo is September 23
Romulus seniors will travel to the Toledo Zoo on
Tuesday, September 23. Participants will leave
the Romulus Senior Center at 9 a.m. The fee for
the trip is only $4, which includes transportation.
The zoo will provide seniors with a free small
fresh-brewed coffee and a mini-muffin, $5 off zoo
memberships, and
a special seniors-
only 20-percent
discount on items
purchased in the
North Star Trading
Post gift shop.
Seniors can get a
guided tour of the
zoos historic Reptile House at 11 a.m., learning
about the history of the building and getting a
close-up view of the zoos reptile collection.

Red Hatters to meet Sept. 12
The Romulus Senior Center chapter of the Red
Hatters will meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September
12. The Red Hat Society, founded in the United States
in 1998, originally was open only to women age 50
and beyond, but now welcomes women of all ages. As
of 2011, there were more than 40,000 chapters in our
nation and 30 other countries. The Romulus group is

Seniors need volunteer teachers
The Romulus Senior Center is seeking volunteers
to teach candy-making, ceramics and crochet during
daytime hours at the center, located at 36525
Bibbins. The goal is to hold each class one day a
month, depending on popularity. To volunteer, call
(734) 955-4120 or visit the center on a weekday.
Caregiver Support Group
Laura Rossow, caregiver support coordinator with
The Information Center, provides a caregiver
support class the fourth Wednesday of each month
at 10 a.m. at the Romulus Senior Center, including
this month on September 24. Anyone interested may
attend the sessions. There is no registration fee.

Free blood pressure checks
Free blood pressure checks will be provided from 10
to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, September 3 and 17, at the
Romulus Senior Center. Thanks to Corpore Sano
Home Health Care Inc. for the service.
Jewelry class is September 25
A jewelry-making class will take place at 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, September 25, at the Romulus Senior
Center. The cost is $10. Participatnts will make jewelry
and take it home. Sign up at the front counter of the
Senior Center or call (734) 955-4120 for more
information.
Diabetic Education
The Senior Alliance is
providing a six-session course
on diabetic healthy eating
education at the Romulus
Senior Center from 11:30 a.m.
to 2 p.m. on Thursdays,
September 4, 11, 18 and 25.
The program will help manage
living day to day with diabetes
or prevent becoming diabetic.
The program is free. Snacks

Party Rooms for rent
The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to
celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family
reunions and wedding receptions. The
beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the
Senior Center are available for rent at very
affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold
up to 120 people. The rooms are available any
day of the week. Bring your own caterer or
make arrangements to use the Senior Center
kitchen. Book early and tell your friends! For

Need food?
Low-income residents are eligible for free
commodities each month at the Senior Center. A
variety of food is provided by The Emergency Food
Assistance Program of Wayne County Senior
Services. This months food distribution begins
at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, September. 18. In addition,
liquid nutrition is provided at 9 a.m. Wednesday,
September. 10. Romulus Senior Director Rose

Seniors walk Friday at the RAC
Romulus seniors are invited to join in a free walking
program from 11 a.m. to noon Fridays at the
Romulus Athletic Center, 35765 Northline Road.
Seniors meet at the RAC and walk on the upstairs
track. Free bus transportation will be provided from
the Senior Center at 11 a.m. each Friday, if requested.

Manicures are a hit at the Romulus Senior Center!
Linda Rodriguez will provide $8 manicures (including
tip) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, September

Fall Citywide Rummage Sale
The City of Romulus free fall rummage sale days
are scheduled for Thursday through Sunday,
September 25-28. A permit is required, although
there is no charge. Those who register with the
City Clerks Office will be on a public list of sales.
