Hempel helps Mlheim provide a smooth flow

Its a long journey by pipeline from Russia to Western Europe, so anything to make the natural gas
flow more smoothly is welcomed. HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 specialises in doing
just that. It is applied as a one-coat lining for natural gas transport pipes.
HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 is designed to reduce drag resistance by making the
inside pipe walls smoother, explains Gregor Schiffer, Hempel Germanys salesperson serving
pipeline customers. We call it flow coat. When the gas flows faster, fewer pumping stations are
needed to keep the gas flowing.
Hempel Germany has been supplying HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 to Mlheim
Pipecoatings GmbH, a supplier of pipes for, among other projects, the Nord Stream I offshore
pipeline taking form along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from Vyborg, Russia to Greifswald, Germany.
At 1,222 km, this will be the worlds longest subsea pipeline. It is to be completed during 2011.
Mlheim is providing 75% (860,000 tonnes) of the pipes for Nord Stream I. It also has signed
a contract to provide coated pipes for Nord Stream II, a second pipeline to run parallel to the
first. Construction of the second is to begin in spring 2011 and be completed in 2012.
PIPE COATING 87830 is a two-component epoxy polyamine cured coating formulated in
accordance with the American Petroleum Institutes standard RP5L2 (Internal Coating of Line
Pipe for Non-corrosive Gas Transmission Service). It features very low VOCs (130 g/l), high solids
(81%), and fast drying.
Mlheim Pipecoatings application technology takes full advantage of PIPE COATING 87830s
excellent qualities. The two-component product is applied by airless spray and mixed at the nozzle.
The paint is warmed to 40 C, which reduces the viscosity to provide a more even paint flow and
coverage.
The guys working close to the nozzle of the spray gun say it is easier to handle this product, Mr.
Schiffer reports. Relative to competing products, Mlheim experience has shown 87830 to have
less odour, less wear on the spray nozzles, and allows easier cleaning of the spray equipment.
There is no contamination in the dry film and the paint film is very uniform and with a lower
roughness profile.
Very importantly, Mr. Christian Balkenohl, Production Manager at Mlheim Pipecoatings,
reports that its customer is satisfied with the performance of PIPE COATING 87830 and the
finished pipes.
Hempels dedication has led to a very good project realization up to now, Mr. Balkenohl notes.
We are sure it will continue in the same way through the coating phase for the Nord Stream
Pipeline Project and that it will open a new horizon for future cooperation on gas pipeline projects
requiring flow coat.
Based upon the experience with HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830, Hempel has made
adjustments to the product to extend the shelf life, which is a challenge for high solids paints applied
with low dry film thickness. This new product is named HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87831.
It has passed all relevant tests according to the standards DIN EN 10 201:2003, ISO 15741:2001
and TRANSCO CM2.

Case Stories
HE MP E L C A S E S T ORI E S 1
Hempel works with Bredero Shaw to lower VOCs and save costs
Engineers and transport companies designing and constructing natural gas pipelines aim
to build pipelines through which gas can flow faster and at lower cost. Bredero Shaw is
supplying its customer pipes to meet those demands for building the 940 km QSN3 gas
pipeline from South Australias Moomba Gas Fields to South West Queensland. It has chosen
HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 for coating half of the project.
Texas-based Bredero Shaw bills itself as the global leader in pipe coating solutions, so its coating
systems simply must be the best available. The companys cooperation with Hempel began about
5 years ago, explains Chris Francis, Manager Container & Pipelines at Hempel (Australia). The
QSN3 is owned by Epic Energy, and it has contracted with Netherlands-based Nacap to do the
construction.
We introduced HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 to them a short time later, Mr. Francis
explains, when the QSN3 project was in front-end engineering design. We offered the advantages
of higher solids volume (81% compared to 48% offered by the competing supplier) that also better
fit the clients production system, a smoother and glossier finish, cost-savings via a massive 40%
lower paint consumption, as well as better work place safety and lower VOCs.
HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830 is a two-component epoxy polyamine cured coating
formulated in accordance with the American Petroleum Institutes standard RP5L2 (Internal
Coating of Line Pipe for Non-corrosive Gas Transmission Service). In addition to its very low VOCs
(130 g/l) and high solids (81%), it is also fast drying and has good application properties.
At the end of the day, Mr. Francis explains, our success was due to the fact that, by using
HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830, our customer was able to offer significant savings
while providing a quality finish.
An internally lined gas pipe reduces friction, Mr. Francis adds, thus providing greater flow
capacity, or allowing smaller gauge pipes to deliver equivalent gas flow. The pipes are easier to
pig and clean while the coating also provides corrosion protection.
(A final note: Based upon the experience with HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87830,
Hempel has made adjustments to the product to extend the shelf life, which is a challenge
for high solids paints applied with low dry film thickness. This new product is named
HEMPELS HS GAS PIPE COATING 87831. It has passed all relevant tests according to the
standards DIN EN 10 201:2003, ISO 15741:2001, TRANSCO CM2, and API RP5L2.)

Recommended: alcohol resistant foam, CO2, powders, water spray.
Not to be used: waterjet.
Decomposition products may include the following materials: carbon oxides halogenated compounds
metal oxide/oxides
Promptly isolate the scene by removing all persons from the vicinity of the incident if there is a fire. No action shall be taken involving any
personal risk or without suitable training. Fire will produce dense black smoke. Exposure to decomposition products may cause a health
hazard. Cool closed containers exposed to fire with water. Do not release runoff from fire to drains or watercourses. Fire-fighters should
wear appropriate protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face-piece operated in positive pressure
mode. Clothing for fire-fighters (including helmets, protective boots and gloves) conforming to European standard EN 469 will provide a
basic level of protection for chemical incidents.
6.2 Environmental precautions
Stop leak if without risk. Move containers from spill area. Approach release from upwind. Prevent entry into sewers, water courses,
basements or confined areas. Wash spillages into an effluent treatment plant or proceed as follows. Contain and collect spillage with non-
combustible, absorbent material e.g. sand, earth, vermiculite or diatomaceous earth and place in container for disposal according to local
regulations (see section 13). Use spark-proof tools and explosion-proof equipment. Contaminated absorbent material may pose the same

Exposure to component solvent vapor concentrations may result in adverse health effects such as mucous membrane and respiratory
system irritation and adverse effects on the kidneys, liver and central nervous system. Solvents may cause some of the above effects by
absorption through the skin. Symptoms and signs include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, muscular weakness, drowsiness and, in extreme
cases, loss of consciousness. Repeated or prolonged contact with the preparation may cause removal of natural fat from the skin, resulting
in non-allergic contact dermatitis and absorption through the skin. If splashed in the eyes, the liquid may cause irritation and reversible
damage. Accidental swallowing may cause stomach pain. Chemical lung inflammation may occur if the product is taken into the lungs via
vomiting.
Epoxy and amine containing products can cause skin disorders such as allergic eczema. The allergy may arise after only a short exposure
period.
