Fields of application and design characteristics
Jaw crushers are mainly
designed for medium-hard to
very hard materials and are
used in quarries for primary
crushing of blasted rockpile,
which depending on the
blasting method can achieve
edge lengths of more than
2,000 mm. For these duties two
diferent jaw crusher types are
available from ThyssenKrupp
Frdertechnik: single-toggle-
and double-toggle jaw crushers.
The distinguishing feature of
these two crushers is the
kinematics of the swing jaw
which the specifc advantage of
the respective crusher type also
results from.

A typical feature of single-
toggle jaw crushers is the
suspension of the swing jaw
on the eccentric drive shaft.
The swing jaw is supported at
its lower part by a toggle plate
positioned against the crusher
frame.
The kinematics of such a
toggle system results in a
higher throughput capacity
than that achieved with
double-toggle jaw crushers
with the same feed opening.
Diferent feed material
characteristics have led to
a diversifcation of the
single-toggle jaw crushers by
rock hardness.

Throughput rates and grain size distributions
The throughput rates of the
standard version of the
single-toggle jaw crushers refer
to medium-hard feed material,
which is easy to crush.
The throughput rates of the hard
rock version of the single-toggle
jaw crushers refer to hard feed
material being difcult to crush.
They are based on theoretical
calculations and verifed by
practical measurements.
Deviations from the average
throughput rate are dependent
on: material, grain size,
composition of the feed
material, hardness, tenacity,
degree of purity and feeding.
Deviations normally to be
expected for common materials
and gap settings can be taken
from the diagram.
The grain size distributions of the
product are approximate values
only. Deviations in the proportional
composition are dependent on
the factors also infuencing the
throughput rate.
The stated grain size
distributions refer to dry and brittle
granite.
For a surface-moist and tough
basalt the fnes content will be
slightly lower and the curve will
move to the right.

Double-toggle jaw crushers:
specially designed for
hardest and toughest
abrasive materials
Double-toggle jaw crushers are
equipped with a system of
toggle levers, which are moved
up and down by a pitman via an
eccentric shaft.
The alternating stretching and
bending movements cause an
oscillating motion of the swing
jaw. Since the material to be
crushed falls down by
gravitation, the pressure which
is necessary to crush the
material is generated, when the
swing jaw moves forward in the
narrowing crushing chamber.
This process is intensifed by
the toothing on the crushing
jaw liners.
When the swing jaw retreats,
the crushed material exits the
crushing chamber through the
pre-selected gap at the bottom,
while new material slips down
from the top.The toggle lever
system ensures a very good
power transmission from the
drive unit to the crushing tools
making double-toggle jaw
crushers the ideal machines for
the crushing of hardest and
toughest materials. Even with
very abrasive materials, only
minimum wear is observed.

When crushing a dry, brittle
granite with a low feed
material portion at the upper
grain size limit, the expected
throughput rate will be higher
than that achieved with the
crushing of
a surface-moist, tough basalt
with large feed lumps.

can be taken
from the diagram.
