EXTRUDED SOLDER BAR

Health and Safety Data Sheet

Identification of Substance/Preparation
Description : High purity 60/40 and 63/37 solder, available in 500g or 1kg bars
Supplier : Anglia
*Solder bars contain lead which can be harmful if absorbed into the body.

Absorption of lead through the skin is not significant.

Fire Fighting Measures
Do not use water where molten metal is present.
Accidental Release Measures
Keep away from drains, surface & ground water and soil to prevent lead contamination.
Handling and Storage
Handling
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling solder.
Storage
Store in a cool dry area and away from food or drink.
Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
In normal soldering operation, where the temperature is below 500C, the exposure to lead
will be minimal and the toxic effects of lead insignificant.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance Solid, grey in colour, insoluble in water.
Odour Not perceptable.
Melting Range 183C to 188 C (60/40)
183C (63/37)
Stability and Reactivity
If exposed to temperatures above 500C then lead dust vapours may be produced.
Solder will react with concentrated acid to release poisonous fumes of nitric acid, in turn
this will oxidise to form nitrogen dioxide; a red gas with a pungent odour.
First Aid Measures
Inhalation : Remove from exposure to fresh air, obtain medical attention if there is
any respiratory distress.
Ingestion : Wash out mouth with water, give water to drink and seek medical advice.
Skin Contact : Wash hands with soap and warm water after handling solder. If irritation
develops, seek medical advice.
Eye Contact : Flush immediately with plenty of water.

Transport Information
No special instructions. CEL solder bars are not classified as hazardous substance.
Regulatory Information
When in use COSHH (Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health) requirements must be met.
Other Information
This document was revised on May 14th 2002, and replaces all previous Health & Safety
data sheets.
Anglia accepts no responsibility for results obtained by the application of this information or the safety
and suitability of CEL products alone or in combination with other products.
Toxicological Information
Acute
Lead can cause weakness, vomiting, loss of appetite, convulsions, stupor and possibly coma.
Ecological Information
Possible effects on the system are negligible.
Disposal Considerations
Dispose of waste as scrap metal solder.
Chronic
Lead can cause weakness, insomnia, hypertension, headache and possible paralysis. Chronic
overexposure to lead may result in damage to the blood-forming, nervous, urinary and reproductive
systems. Lead is classified as a 2B carcinogen by the IARC, evidence for carcinogenicity is adequate
in animals but inadequate in humans. Severe lead toxicity has long been known to cause stetrility,
abortion and neonatal mortality and morbidity.
