The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has
anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has
sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recov-
ery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to
proclaim the year of the Lords favor.
Luke 4:18-19
Jesus calls us to be peacemakers.
Every day we see our worlds need for Christs reconciling love, peace, and jus-
tice. The news is full of the strife in the world, we struggle to handle conflicts in
our families and communities, and we negotiate our own inner worlds of chaos
and longing. A Season of Peace is a four-week pilgrimage designed to deepen the
pursuit of peace for congregations, families, and individuals. You are invited to
think of your calling as a peacemaker through resources provided at
www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/seasonofpeace. You may download
the studies on your own or pick up print copies at the church. Available are:
Peace Cards simple conversation starters for your family
Path of Peace Daily reflections subscribe at above website
Bible Study available at the website or attend the Coffee and Conversation
class
The season will culminate with the Peace and Global Witness offering (formerly
the Peacemaking Offering) on World Communion Sunday, October 5. There will
also be a peace fair in fellowship hall that morning. Bulletin inserts and other
information will be coming.
The Presbyterian Mission Agency says, it is for the curious and the jaded, the
beginner and the experienced peace seeker. Spend a new season with Jesus, the
peacemaker, and see if this might become your way of being authentically Chris-
tian in the world.
Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in
love, in faith, in purity. (1Timothy 4:12 NRSV)
In the sentence quoted above Paul urges Timothy not to let Timothys relative
youth make him shrink from the opportunities and challenges of gospel ministry.
As a church we are blessed that our youth do not hang back on the sidelines but
rather embrace their baptismal callings in Christ. Indeed, they are examples for us in speech and
conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. In important activities, they lead the way and are introducing the
rest of us to healthy new practices. For example, our three-church Holypalooza (coming up on Sep-
tember 20 and 21; see other publicity in the Herald!!) had its beginnings in our planning for the youth
program. And while this summer marked our first adult mission trip, the youth group for a number
of years has shown the way in this important ministry. Our youth are equal partners in ministry!
Attendance in the Seventh Cents Youth Group has been growing steadily since we entered into this
joint ministry with Centenary United Methodist Church. Eighteen youth attended this years kick-
off retreat at the Sycamore Outdoor Center. When I dropped in on the event, I was very pleased
to see that our youth had brought their friends. This is an important sign of a healthy youth group. If
our youth are tentative in their participation in the group, they do not invite their friends for fear that
their friends will consider the event to be lame. But if they are enthusiastic about the group, they
are eager to share the experience with their closest friends. Clearly, our youth are proud of Seventh
Cents Youth Group.
I am grateful to the youth of our church and their parents, who have been loyal to the joint youth
programeven during the earlier, growing years. Our last two youth directorsTiffany Grossman
and Amanda (Tramel) Prochaskahave provided sure-handed and loving guidance to the youth, as
well as excellent planning. The Youth Design Teams supervisory efforts have turned into a local real-
ity the Sustainable Youth Ministry model that we adopted initially. The sustainable part of our
plan depends upon a very broad base of volunteers in both congregations supporting the activities
planned by Tiffany and the Design Team. With the good planning being done, volunteers know that
they can help with a specific and limited task: we can say yes to help with one event, secure in the
knowledge that others are helping with other events. This is the season when Tiffany and the Design
Team are recruiting helpers for the coming year. Im sure you will be as receptive to their requests
as you have been in the past! Thank you.
Please remember to pray for our youth. The world they must navigate is filled with more dangerous
spiritual and moral challenges than most of us faced when we were young. When they were baptized,
we vowed we would support them in their lives of Christian discipleship. It takes the whole church
to raise a Christian.

school year at the Indiana State Sycamore Outdoor Center. In to-
tal, 18 youth participated in exciting activities such as canoeing, a

thank you goes to Scott and Sinwon Racop, Erin Pugh, Jim Moles,
Martha Crossen, Don Richards, Ryan Grossman, Jimmy Moore,
Lant Davis, and the ISU Outdoor Center crew for making this an
excellent event.

It is our goal to make sure parents have all youth group related information. If you have not
yet received your Youth Parent Information packet for this school year, please feel free to contact

information sheets within these packets and return them to the church office. Thank you!
