Match Report; New South Wales clinch series with late heroics ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adelaide,SA- New South Wales are the 2014 State Of Origin Champions after a thrilling 24-17 win at a packed Adelaide Oval.
The fans had to wait until the 4th quarter for the game to come to life but when it did it really exploded. Jeremy Holmes caught his second touchdown pass at the beginning of the final period and that extended the New South Wales lead to 17-3 and they looked unbeatable. Yet nothing beats Queensland spirit and the under dogs never gave in. Quarterback Chris Ahearn was not in the game until now and he hit 6 straight passes finishing with an accurate lob to the corner for big Mike Cornish to take the grab and score.
On the other side Luke Asotasi was taking charge but just when you thought the Champion youngster would steer the Roaches to victory the unthinkable happened. On back to back drives he gave up interceptions which only poured fuel on the fire that was the Queensland comeback.
Ahearn nearly threw away the chance offered when he too was intercepted in the end zone by Nick Boyd but with a second possibility he was bale to find Tokeru Morfett on a screen to the right and he broke threw for the score. Morfett was dangerous all night against the Roaches and he finsihed with 8 catches and 101 yards.
So with just 1m47 remaining and with two picks weighing on his mind, Asotasi came back on the field. Asotasi was calm in the huddle but his energy as he came up to the line showed the urgency of the situation. He motioned James Rycen inside and Rycen then turned back to his original position giving away Queensland man coverage. Rycen then burts down the field beating John Elgey with his first step. Elgey had been good all game but on this play he would be caught out. Asotasi found time in the pocket and after dancing momentarily on the spot he stepped between the tackle and the guard and sent the long bomb down the field. The ball had the perfect arc and fell into Rycen's lap who did not break stride, the mark of a champion. 57 yards the play went and Asotasi was back on top of the world.
For Queensland, losing the lead again was one too many hurdles to jump. Ahearn had no more replies left and he last Hail Mary was knocked away in the end zone as time expired. Asotasi had shown he was human but when it mattered he did enough and controversially won his second Mason Medal. Injury Report; QLD CB 26 J.Lee Strained shoulder QLD SS 27 C.Lowe Broken Collarbone
