5efore you install a new version of #$%ay for +ds 3a"4 please make sure you have followed
these steps.

:ewer versions of #$%ay require a hardware lock (dongle in order to operate4 rather than
software license key. :ormally you should receive the dongle(s from the re$seller(s from
whom you purchased #$%ay itself.
*ote8 once you receive your dongle4 you no longer need to obtain a software license key ; the
dongle itself acts like a license key.
1he #$%ay installation includes the required dongle drivers< you can also download and install

+pgrade fro" an existing V-Ray installation
,#is section descri&es #o" to u!)rade an existin) installation of V-Ray. e!endin) on your current
version9 you may need to first manually uninstall t#e current one.
+pgrading fro" &ersion 1.5 RCx to a ne%er &ersion
,n order to upgrade an e"isting installation of #$%ay 1.& %'" simply run the installer program
for the new version and follow the on$screen instructions. 1here is no need to e"plicitly
uninstall the previous #$%ay version ; this will be done automatically by the installer for the
new version. @or more information4 see the 'lean installation section.

+pgrading fro" &ersion 1.,-..3 and earlier
5efore you can upgrade #$%ay from version 1.().*+4 you need to uninstall your current
version. Since the original 1.().*+ version does not include an uninstaller4 you must do this
manually. .fter you remove #$%ay 1.().*+4 proceed with the installation of the new version as
described in the 'lean installation section.
1o uninstall #$%ay 1.().*+ manually4 you need to delete the following files (you can run the
1.().*+ installer if you want to restore your installation later on. :ote that files may be
named slightly differently depending on your +ds 3a" version (e.g. cgauth/*.dll for +ds 3a"

,nstalling #$%ay requires that you have administrative privileges on your system. ,f you are
running -indows #ista4 right$click on the installer and select the Run as Administrator option.
@or all other versions of -indows make sure that you are logged in with administrative
privileges and double$click the installer to run it. @ollow the on$screen instructions.
Installing &ersion 1.5 %it ard%are lo'( )dongle*
#$%ay 1.& requires a hardware lock (dongle in order to run. 1his is convenient if you want to
move your #$%ay license around (e.g. work both at home and at the office or in case you need
to replace your workstation.
!sing the hardware lock requires that you have the correct drivers to work with the device.
1hese drivers are included with the installation of #$%ay for -indows AP and #ista +2$ and
/($bit. 6ou can also manually download the newest drivers from the -,5!$=>6 website8

Workstation installation of V-Ray 1.5 with hardware lock (dongle)
1o install #$%ay and the dongle drivers on your machine4 please follow these steps8
1. 3ake sure that you have your dongle ready at hand. Bo not plug it into your machine
yet. ,f you plug the dongle before the correct drivers are installed4 -indows will not
recogniCe it. .lso make sure that you have administrative privileges to run the installer.
2. Start the #$%ay 1.& installer (-indows #ista users4 see note above. 6ou should get the
welcome screen of the installer< click the :e"t button to proceed.
+. ,f the installer detects that there are applications running4 which would prevent some
of the files to be copied properly4 it will list those applications in the ne"t screen< close
these applications and click the :e"t button.
(. 1he ne"t screen will present you with the #$%ay licensing agreement. Please take a
moment to review this agreement. ,f you disagree with any of the terms4 click the D,
disagreeE button to cancel the installation. Otherwise4 click the D, agreeE button to
proceed8

&. 1he ne"t screen allows you to choose the installation type. 6ou can choose between a
full (workstation installation4 a render slave installation (which includes only files
related to rendering4 without documentation nor the #$%ay SB=4 and a license server
only installation (which includes only files related to the #$%ay license server. Since
we are interested in a workstation installation4 choose the -orkstation (full option8
/. 1he ne"t screen requires to enter the folders into which the various #$%ay components
will be copied. 1he installer will fill in the fields with default suitable values4 if possible.
6ou can change any of these paths as you wish4 although the defaults should work in
most cases< 'lick the :e"t button when you are done8
). 1he screen allows you to choose whether you will be running the #$%ay license server
on the same machine4 or on a different machine in the network.

0. ,f you opted to install the #$%ay license server locally on the same machine4 the ne"t
screen presents additional options specific to the hardware license< otherwise4 you will
get directly to step 2 and after the installation is complete4 you will get a dialog for
setting up the remote license server settings.
0.1 1he first option is to install the hardware lock drivers. ,f you intend to use the
dongle on this workstation4 then this option must be O: in order for the dongle to
work properly.
0.2 1he second option allows you to register the #$%ay license service so that it will
start automatically when -indows boots up. 1he #$%ay license service must be
running whenever you want to use the dongle on a given workstation (it reads the
information from the dongle and communicates with #$%ay rendering system to
process this information. ,f you intend to use the dongle on this machine4 then it is
recommended to turn this option O:.
2. 1he ne"t screen is your last chance to cancel the installation or to modify any
installation options before any changes have been made to your system. ,f you wish to
change any of the settings you have selected4 click the 5ack button. 1o continue with
the actual installation4 click :e"t. 'lick 'ancel to e"it the installer without any changes
to your system.

1*. ,f there was a different version of #$%ay installed4 you will receive a dialog bo"
prompting to uninstall the current version< ,f you wish to keep the current version (for
e"ample4 if you Fust wish to install into a different folder4 click O= in this dialog bo"4
and 'ancel the uninstaller dialog that follows. Otherwise4 click O= and proceed with
the uninstaller.
11. 1he installer proceeds to copy the #$%ay files to your system and prints out the
progress of the installation. ,f you wish4 you may e"amine the installation log to see
what actions have been carried out. 'lick :e"t to go to the final screen of the installer.
12. ,f you wish to view the changelog and readme files for this version #$%ay4 leave the
check$bo"es selected. ,f you do not wish to view the files4 clear the checkbo"(es. 'lick
@inish to e"it the installer.

1+. ,f you chose the option to install the dongle drivers4 you will get the initial screen of the
dongle drivers installer< 'lick the :e"t button to proceed with the installation of the
dongle drivers.
*ote- 1he +2$bit installation of #$%ay includes only the +2$bit -,5!$=>6 drivers. ,f you
are installing the +2$bit version of #$%ay on a /($bit operating system4 you must
download and install the dongle drivers separately from the -,5!$=>6 website at
1(. 1he ne"t screen allows you to choose language support for the dongle drivers< click
:e"t to go to the ne"t screen8
1&. 1he ne"t screen allows you to choose some components for the drivers< leave the
settings at their default and click the :e"t button.

1/. 1he ne"t screen shows the options with which the dongle drivers will be installed. ,f
you wish to make any changes4 click the 5ack button< if you wish to cancel the dongle
drivers installation4 click the 'ancel button. 1o proceed4 click :e"t.
1). 1he -,5! key installer proceeds to copy the necessary files to your system. .fter the
files are copied4 click the :e"t button to go to the final screen of the dongle drivers
installer.
10. 6ou should get the final screen of the dongle drivers installer. 'lick @inish to e"it.
12. ,f the installation is successful4 you will get a confirmation message bo"< 'lick O= to

close it.
2*. :ow that the dongle drivers are installed4 plug the #$%ay dongle into a free !S5 port on
your machine8
*ote- if you have more than #$%ay dongle4 you can plug them all into the same machine.
1he number of available licenses will be added from all dongles.
21. Start the #$%ay license service from the Start menu G Programs G Chaos Group G V-
Ray for 3dsmax G Licensing G Launch V-Ray license service8
22. ,f you are running -indows AP with Service Pack 2 and -indows @irewall enabled4 you
may get a message like the one below< select the !nblock option to allow other
computers to connect to the #$%ay license service $ this will be required by render
slaves for network rendering4 which must be able to connect to a running license
service.

2+. ,f the dongle is correctly recogniCed4 you will get the #$%ay license service icon in the
1ask5ar8
2(. 1he #$%ay license service allows you to check its status from anywhere in the network
using a regular web browser. @or e"ample4 if you want to check the current status of the
license service that you Fust started4 open your web browser4 and in the address field
type http:localhost:3!3!" and press >nter. 6ou should get a page like below< choose
the Get status of the server option to see more information.
2&. 1he Status page shows information about the total number of licenses available to the
license server< how many of them are engaged and by which machine in the network
etc.

2/. 1his concludes the installation of #$%ay 1.& %'+ with hardware lock on your
workstation. See the section below for setting up your render slaves.
Render slave installation of V-Ray 1.5
1o install #$%ay 1.& on render slaves for network or distributed rendering please follow these
steps.
1. Start the installation file by double$clicking on it< note that you must have
.dministrator privileges to install #$%ay. 6ou should get the initial screen of the
installer< click the :e"t button to proceed.
2. ,f there are any applications running4 which would prevent the installation from
completing properly4 you will get a screen listing these applications< close them and
click the :e"t button to proceed8

installation path for additional #$%ay files. :ormally these are filled automatically by
the installer4 but you can modify them if you wish. 'lick the :e"t button to proceed8

you are sure that you wish to proceed4 click the :e"t button.
). ,f there was a previous version of #$%ay installed4 you will get a dialog bo" that it must
be uninstalled first< click the O= button to uninstall the previous version8
0. .fter the uninstallation of the previous version (if there was one4 the installer
proceeds to copy the files required for network and distributed rendering with #$%ay. ,f
you wish4 you can e"amine the changes made to your system in the list bo". 'lick the
:e"t button to get to the final screen of the installer.
2. .fter the installation is complete4 you will get the final screen of the installer< click O=
to close it8

1*. -hen you close the installer4 you will get a dialog for the #$%ay license server settings.
:ote that for network and distributed rendering4 the slaves will require a connection to
a working #$%ay license server4 even though they do not require a separate license.
>nter the name or ,P address of the machine where the #$%ay license server is running
and click the O= button to close the dialog.
11. :ote that you can change these settings at any other time by running the #$%ay license
client configuration utility from the Start menu # Programs # Chaos Group # V-Ray
for 3dsmax # Licensing # $dministration # Change V-Ray client license settings.
12. ,f you wish to use the slave for Bistributed rendering4 you can register the #$%ay
spawner service so that it runs automatically from the Start menu G Programs G
Chaos Group G V-Ray for 3dsmax G %istri&uted rendering G $dministation G
Register V-Ray spa'ner service. .lso note that4 in order for the spawner to work
properly4 you must run at least one regular network render Fob with backburner on the
render slave.
1+. ,f you will be using .utodesk #,H for distributed rendering4 you need to create a file
vrayspa'ner(ini in the root folder of .utodesk #,H on each render server and add the

1his will start the #$%ay uninstaller. @ollow the on$screen instructions to remove #$%ay from
your system and restore any files overwritten by the installation.

Reprogra""ing a V-Ray dongle for a different nu"ber of li'enses
,f you purchase more copies of the #$%ay renderer4 your dongle will need to be reprogrammed
to reflect the new number of available licenses. %eprogramming the dongle is a two$part
process8
.. ,n the first part4 you need to send us a special file4 created by the -,5!$=>6 drivers
which contains information identifying your specific dongle.
5. 'haos 7roup will send you another file4 which includes the new contents of your
dongle. 1his is transferred onto the dongle by the -,5!$=>6 drivers.
.fter the dongle is reprogrammed4 you can check if the new licenses have been added
successfully. Iere are these steps in more details.

Creating a dongle remote programming contet file (.w!c)
,n order to reprogram the dongle4 you first need to create a file which identifies your specific
dongle.
1. 7o to the machine where the dongle is plugged and where the -,5!$=>6 drivers are
installed.
2. %ight$click on the Besktop and select +e' G ,-.* Control /ile(
+. 1his will open a dialog bo" similar to the one below. 3ake sure you have selected the
option (#B'-B." Remote )rogramming Conte%t file and click the 'reate button8
(. ,f the dongle information is successfully written4 you will get a message similar to the
one below and a new file )y,i&u.ox('&c will be created on the Besktop.
*ote- the .w/c file does not contain any information that may personally identify you or
your computer. ,t contains only information about your dongle.
&. >mail this file to vrayJchaosgroup.com along with any other relevant information.
"pdating the contents of the dongle with a remote programming file (.rt#)
Once we receive the .w/c file4 we will generate another file with e"tension .rtu that can be used
by the dongle drivers to update the contents of the dongle.
1. -hen you receive the .rtu file4 save it on the Besktop of the machine where the dongle
is plugged.

2. 'lose the #$%ay licensing service4 if it is running. 6ou can do this either by right$clicking
the #$%ay license service icon in the 1ask 5ar and selecting 0xit4 or if it is running as a
service $ from the Control panel G $dministrative tools G Services applet.
+. Bouble$click the saved .rtu file. 1he dongle software will ask you whether you really
want to transfer the file to the dongle. 'lick 6es to update your dongle.
(. ,f the contents of the file is successfully transferred4 you will get a confirmation dialog
similar to the one below< click O= to close the dialog.
&. Start the #$%ay licensing service again4 for e"ample from the Start menu G Programs G
Chaos Group G V-Ray for 3dsmax G Licensing G Launch V-Ray license server.
Checking if the dongle has !een reprogrammed correctly
.fter the dongle is successfully updated4 you may wish to check if the number of licenses is
correct.
1. 3ake sure the #$%ay licensing service is running on the machine where the dongle is
plugged in.
2. Open a web browser and in the address field4 type http:someserver:3!3!" where
someser0er is the name or ,P address of the machine where the #$%ay licensing service
is running (or localhost if you are on that machine. 'lick the Get status of the server
link on the page that loads. 1his will show a web$page with information about the
licenses currently available to the #$%ay licensing service. 1he total number of licenses
is listed at the top of the page8
+. 'heck if the numbers match the required number of licenses.

Troublesooting
V-Ray renderer #ser interface is missing in $ds %a
Symptoms: -hen you assign #$%ay as the current renderer in +ds 3a"4 instead of the normal
user interface in the %ender Scene dialog4 you get the following8
Cause: 1his happens because #$%ay cannot obtain a user$interface license. 1here are a
number of causes for this8
.. 1he license server machine name or ,P is not specified correctly<
5. 1he license server is not running on the specified machine<
'. 1here is a network problem that prevents #$%ay from connecting to the license server<
B. .ll the available licenses are already engaged by other machines in the network.
Resolution: 1he resolution to the issue depends on the specific cause for it. Please check the
following8
.. 'heck that the license server name or ,P address and port number are specified
correctly. 1o do this4 click on the 0ditset license server information button and in
the dialog that appears make sure that the server name9,P are entered correctly and
that the port number is correct. :ote that you will need to restart +ds 3a" if you
modify any of these settings.
,. 1he port must be 31312.
,,. ,f the license server is running locally on the same machine4 the server name must
be localhost or ,P 345.1.1.3< otherwise4 it must be the name or ,P of the machine
where the license server is running. 6ou can obtain the computer name9,P address
of a machine from your system administrator or using one of the methods below8
a. 1o find out what is the name of the machine running the #$%ay license server4 go

to that machine4 open the Control panel G System applet and choose the
Computer +ame tab. 6ou will find the computer name listed there.
b. 1o find out what is the ,P address of the machine running the #$%ay license
server4 use the ipconfig command line utility4 or go to the Control panel G
+et'or1 connections G Local area net'or1 applet and choose the Support
tab. 6ou will find the current ,P address of the machine there.
5. ,f the license server name and port are specified correctly4 make sure that the license
server is actually running on the specified machine. 1his can be done in one of the
following ways8
,. 'heck to see if the license server icon is present in the 1ask5ar (it is the blue$
orange #$%ay logo with the letter K. ,f this icon is present4 then the #$%ay license
service is running on the machine.
,,. ,f the #$%ay license service icon does not appear in the 1ask 5ar4 the license server
may still be running hidden as a service. 1o check if it is running4 open the 1ask
3anager (e.g. Start menu G Run((( and type taskmgr and press >nter. ,n the 1ask
manager window4 select the Processes tab. 3ake sure that the Sho' processes
from all users option is checked and and try to locate a process named
vrlservice(exe ; if this process is present4 then the #$%ay license server is running
on the machine.
,,,. ,f you cannot locate the vrlservice.e"e process in the 1ask 3anager4 this means that
the #$%ay license server is not running and you will need to start it manually. 1o
start the license service4 you can use the Start menu G Programs G Chaos Group G

V-Ray for 3ds )ax G Licensing G Launch V-Ray license service. ,f you get any
errors from the license service4 please see the other sections of the 1roubleshooting
guide.
'. ,f the license service is running4 there may be a network problem that prevents #$%ay
from communicating with it.
,. 6ou can check if you can connect to the license service with a regular web browser.
On the machine where you want to run #$%ay4 open a web browser and in the
.ddress field type http:servername:3!3!" where ser0ername is the name or ,P
address of the machine where the license service is running (localhost if it is
running on the same machine. ,f you get a page like the one below4 then the
licensing service can be accessed successfully through the network.
,f you get an error message in your web browser4 then there is a network problem
to connect to the license service. See below for more details.
,,. ,f there is a network problem while you try to connect to the license server4 there
may be two different reasons for it8
a. ,f you can access the ,nternet or other machines in your network successfully4
then the most likely problem is that a firewall or an anti$virus program is be
blocking the commincation between the two machines. Please contact your
system administrator for help on setting up your firewall and9or antivirus
programs. 1he communication ports used by #$%ay by default is 31312.
b. ,f you cannot connect to the ,nternet or other machines in the network4 then
there may be a physical problem in the communication between the machines
(e.g. defective network cable etc or a problem with your network settings.
Please contact your system administrator for more help on this issue.
B. ,f you can successfully connect to the license service4 the problem may be that all the
available licenses are engaged by other machines in your network.
,. ,f you are using a hardware lock (dongle4 the number of available licenses is listed

in the license server status page. 1o see this page4 open a web browser and in the
address field type http:servername:3!3!" where ser0ername is the name of the
machine where the license service is running (localhost if this is the same machine
where you are typing this.
,,. 'lick on the link Get status of the server. 1his will open a page with information
about the available licenses. @or e"ample4 in the image below4 you can see that the
available licenses are 1 interface license (the %ender Scene dialog4 1 render license4
1* B% licenses and 1**** network licenses (for backburner rendering. .lso4 the
interface license is engaged by the machine with ,P address 345.1.1.3 (which is the
same machine where the license server is running.
,,,. ,f there are no free interface licenses4 then they have all been engaged by other
machines on the network4 which are also listed in the page. 'lose the Render Scene
dialog on one of those machines to free an interface license that you can use.

Symptoms: -hen you start the #$%ay license service it pops a dialog bo" like the ones below8
Cause: 1his happens because the license service cannot find a dongle attached to the machine.
1his can happen for a number of reasons8
.. 1he dongle is not attached to the machine<

5. 1he -,5! key drivers are not installed<
'. 1he dongle is not recognised.
Resolution:
.. 3ake sure the dongle is attached to a !S5 port on the machine where you start the #$
%ay license service.
5. ,f the dongle is attached4 make sure that you have also installed the -,5! key drivers.
1o check if the -,5! key drivers are installed4 open the Control panel G $ddremove
programs applet and look for a -,5!$=>6 setup entry. ,f you do not find this entry4
then the dongle drivers are not installed. 1o install the drivers4 either run the #$%ay
installation again and make sure the D,nstall -,5!$=>6 driversE option is checked4 or
download the drivers separately from the -,5!$=>6 website at
'. ,f the dongle drivers are installed4 make sure that they recogniCe the plugged dongle.
,. Open the Control panel G System applet. 'hoose the 2ard'are tab and then click
on the %evice manager button. >"pand the *nversal serial &us controllers
section and check for a -,5! key entry there8
,,. ,f you do not find this entry4 try plugging the dongle into a different !S5 port.
,,,. ,f you still cannot make your system to recogniCe the dongle4 please contact us at

Symptoms: 1he dongle has been working fine for some time and suddenly it is no longer
recogniCed by -indows as a !S5 device causing the #$%ay license server to fail or #$%ay

Cause: -e are unsure of the cause of this e"cept that it is not directly related to #$%ay itself.
Resolution: Plug the dongle into a different !S5 port on the same machine and restart the #$
%ay license server. ,f the dongle is still not recognised4 try to install it on a different machine. ,f

Symptoms: 1he #$%ay licensing service is running and is listed in the active processes by the
1ask 3anager4 but there is no icon in the 1ask5ar.
Cause: 1here may be two reasons for this8
.. 1he icon is hidden by the $uto-hide unused icons option of the 1ask5ar tray.
5. ,f the #$%ay license service was started automatically as a -indows service4 it will not
show any !, items.
Resolution:
.. ,f you have the $uto-hide unused icons option of the 1ask5ar tray4 click on the
double$arrow icon to e"pand the full list of icons.
5. ,f you still do not see the #$%ay licensing service icon4 that means that the #$%ay
licensing service is started as a -indows service and in that case cannot show any
graphical user interface. 1here is currently no resolution for this< you must manage the
#$%ay license service from the Control panel G $dministrative tools G Services
applet.
