Class: Successful completion of this class fulfills a social studies requirement to graduate.
STUDENTS MUST EARN CREDIT IN THIS COURSE IN ORDER TO GRADUATE!
Textbook: Civics Today Citizenship, Economics & You by Glencoe/McGraw Pub.

Major Course Skills and Objectives
Social Studies Skillsby participating in class and through the completion of homework assignments,
projects and web quests, all students will be able to meet the following state of Michigan curriculum
benchmarks:
a. Explain and demonstrate how economic organizations confront scarcity and market forces
when organizing, producing,
b. Analyze how the functions and constraints of business structures, the role of price in the
market, and relationships of investment to productivity and growth, impact competitive
markets.
c. Compare how supply, demand, price, equilibrium, elasticity, and incentives affect the
workings of a market.
d. Describe the varied ways government can impact the market through policy decisions,
protection of consumers, and as a producer and consumer of goods and services, and
explain how economic incentives affect government decisions.
e. Describe inflation, unemployment, output, and growth, and the factors that cause changes
in those conditions, and describe the role of money and interest rates in national markets.
f. Analyze the role of government in the United States economy by identifying macroeconomic
goals; comparing perspectives on government roles; analyzing fiscal and monetary policy;
and describing the role of government as a producer and consumer of public goods and
services. Analyze how governmental decisions on taxation, spending, protections, and
regulation impact macroeconomic goals.
g. Explain how different economic systems, including free market, command, and mixed
systems, coordinate and facilitate the exchange, production, distribution, and consumption
of goods and services.
h. Describe how trade generates economic development and interdependence and analyze the
resulting challenges and benefits for individuals, producers, and government.
i. Describe and demonstrate how the economic forces of scarcity and opportunity costs
impact individual and household choices.




Assessment and Grading
a. Grades are recorded based on points scored. All points earned are totaled and divided by
the total points possible at the end of the each nine-week marking period.
Homework, participation points, study guides, essays and tests are treated as
equal point opportunities and are un-weighted in my grade book.

b. Point values are determined by the type of assignment and will correlate with the level of
difficulty and worth.
c. Each nine-week marking period is worth 42.5% of your semester grade and a semester exam
comprises the remaining 15% of your final grade.
d. Extra credit opportunities may be given at the teachers discretion
e. Students who do not meet minimum quality standards on writing assignments will be asked
to re-write their work.

Make-up and Late Work Policies
Late assignments for this course may be turned in for 50% credit up to 3 class days after the
original due date.
An assignment is late if it is not turned in when I collect it or check it off
For an excused absence you will get one school day for each day missed.
You are expected to e-mail me and check on-line on days you are absent to see if there
is work you can catch up on.
On any pre-arranged absences you will need to see me in advance of the absence to
determine when your work is due. You may need to turn in work or take quiz/test before
you go. This is my call.
If you are gone the day of a quiz or test, be prepared to take the make-up the next class we
meet. I reserve the right to have you take it then.
Students with an unexcused absence will receive a zero on any assignment due or given that
day.
This includes quizzes and tests!




Classroom Policies
a. A tardy will be issued for students not in the room when the bell rings.
Tardies are monitored by the attendance office on a class by class basis.

Any student that is over the CAP must attain a 77% or better on the final exam to
earn a passing grade (D-) for the semester.
Multiple infractions may result in disciplinary action as set forth by the guidelines in the
student handbook.
b. Bathrooms and drinking fountains are to be used before class.
c. Students are expected to bring all materials needed for class.
d. Students are expected to behave in a manner conducive to a strong learning environment
for others.
e. Cheating and plagiarism will be dealt with according to procedures in the student handbook.
f. Bottled water and sports drink are acceptable, but food is not permitted in class
g. Students should not pack up and gather by the door
h. On days that I am gone, you are expected to fully cooperate with guest teachers.
i. Students whose names are left as not following the lesson plan will be subject to
administrative disciplinary action.

Electronic Devices
a. Technology plays a major role in aiding your learning opportunity in class. Bring your
device charged and ready to go each day. iPads, cell phones, and other electronic
devices are to be used in accordance with classroom purpose and school policies.
b. iPads are to only be taken out and used as instructed during class by your teacher.
c. Gaming, social networking (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, texting, etc.), and retail
shopping etc. are not part of the educational framework in this class and will negatively
impact your performance. In addition, misuse is a distraction to those around you and
myself and is strictly prohibited.
If device must be used for one of the above purposes, ask me 1
st
before doing it on
your own.
d. Students in violation of the electronics policy will 1) receive a warning for 1
st
offense
2) Detention and loss of device for day on the 2
nd
offense 3) Detention and loss of device
in this class until issue is resolved to my satisfaction for 3
rd
offense.
