CHAPTER 1
INTRODUTION OF
BANKING
- 77 -
BANKING IN INDIA
Without a sound and effective banking system in India it cannot have a healthy
economy. The banking system of India should not only be hassle free but it should
be able to meet new challenges posed by the technology and any other external and
internal factors. For the past three decades India's banking system has several
outstanding achievements to its credit. The most striking is its extensive reach. It is
no longer confined to only metropolitans or cosmopolitans in India. In fact, Indian
banking system has reached even to the remote corners of the country. This is one
of the main reasons of India's growth process.
HISTORY
The first bank in India, though conservative, was established in !"#. From !"#
till today, the $ourney of Indian %anking &ystem can be segregated into three
distinct phases. They are as mentioned below'
( )*+&, I - ,arly phase from !"# to .#. of Indian %anks
( )*+&, II - /ationali0ation of Indian %anks and up to ..
( )*+&, III - Indian Financial 1 %anking &ector 2eforms after ...
- 77 -
PHASE I:
The 3eneral %ank of India was set up in the year !"#. /ext came %ank of
*industan and %engal %ank.
The ,ast India 4ompany established
Bank of Bengal (1809)
Bank of Bo!"a#(18$0) an%
Bank of &a%'a( (18$)5 as independent units and called it P'e(*%en+#
Bank(.
These three banks were amalgamated in .67 and I!,e'*al Bank of In%*a
was established which started as private shareholders banks, mostly ,uropeans
shareholders. 8uring the first phase the growth was very slow and banks also
experienced periodic failures between .9 and .:". There were approximately
77 banks, mostly small. To streamline the functioning and activities of
commercial banks, the 3overnment of India came up with The %anking
4ompanies +ct, .:. which was later changed to %anking 2egulation +ct .:. as
per amending +ct of .#; <+ct /o.69 of .#;5. 2eserve %ank of India was vested
with extensive powers for the supervision of banking in India as the 4entral
%anking +uthority. 8uring those day=s public has lesser confidence in the banks.
+s an aftermath deposit mobili0ation was slow. +breast of it the savings bank
facility provided by the )ostal department was comparatively safer. >oreover,
funds were largely given to the traders.
- 77 -
PHASE II:
3overnment took ma$or steps in this Indian %anking &ector 2eform after
independence. In .;;, it nationali0ed Imperial %ank of India with extensive
banking facilities on a large scale especially in rural and semi-urban areas. &econd
phase of nationali0ation Indian %anking &ector 2eform was carried out in ."7
with seven more banks. This step brought "7? of the banking segment in India
under 3overnment ownership.
The following are the steps taken by the 3overnment of India to 2egulate %anking
Institutions in the 4ountry'
( 19$9: ,nactment of %anking 2egulation +ct.
( 19--' /ationali0ation of &tate %ank of India.
( 19-9' /ationali0ation of &%I subsidiaries.
( 19.1: Insurance cover extended to deposits.
( 19.9: /ationali0ation of : ma$or banks.
( 19/1: 4reation of credit guarantee corporation.
( 19/-' 4reation of regional rural banks.
( 1980' /ationali0ation of seven banks with deposits over 677 crores.
+fter the nationali0ation of banks, the branches of the public sector bank India
raised to approximately "77? in deposits and advances took a huge $ump by
,777?.%anking in the sunshine of 3overnment ownership gave the public
implicit faith and immense confidence about the sustainability of these institutions.
- 77 -
PHASE III
This phase has introduced many more products and facilities in the banking sector
in its reforms measure. In .., under the chairmanship of > /arasimham, a
committee was set up by his name which worked for the liberali0ation of banking
practices.
The country is flooded with foreign banks and their +T> stations. ,fforts are being
put to give a satisfactory service to customers. )hone banking and net banking is
introduced. The entire system became more convenient and swift. The financial
system of India has shown a great deal of resilience. It is sheltered from any crisis
triggered by any external macroeconomics shock as other ,ast +sian 4ountries
suffered. This is all due to a flexible exchange rate regime, the Foreign 2eserves
are high, the capital account is not yet fully convertible, and banks and their
customers have limited foreign exchange exposure.
- 77 -
NATIONA0I1ED BANKS IN INDIA
%anking &ystem in India is dominated by nationali0ed banks. The nationali0ation
of banks in India took place in .#. by >rs. Indira 3andhi the then prime minister.
The ma$or ob$ective behind nationali0ation was to spread banking infrastructure in
rural areas and make available cheap finance to Indian farmers. Fourteen banks
were nationali0ed in .#..
%efore .#., &tate of India <&%I5 was only public sector bank in India. &%I was
nationali0ed in .;; under the &%I +ct of .;;. The second phase of
nationali0ation of Indian banks took place in the year ."7. &even more banks
were nationali0ed with deposits over 677 crores
PRI2ATE BANKS
+ll the banks in India were earlier private banks. They were founded in the pre-
independence era to cater to the banking needs of the people. %ut after
nationali0ation of banks in .#. public sector banks came to occupy dominant role
in the banking structure. )rivate sector banking in India received a fillip in ..:
when 2eserve %ank of India encouraged setting up to private banks as part of its
policy of liberali0ation of the Indian %anking Industry. *ousing 8evelopment
Finance 4orporation @imited <*8F45 was amongst the first to receive an AIn
principle= approval from the 2eserve %ank of India <2%I5 to set up a bank in the
private sector.
)rivate %anks have played a ma$or role in the development of Indian banking
industry. They have made banking more efficient and customer friendly. In the
process they have $olted public sector banks out of complacency and forced them
to become more competitive.

CONCLUSION AND
SUGGESTIONS
- 77 -
<ON<09SION
The study mainly was on the customer orientation that how they think, what
they want from their banks and how they take decision going to any bank.
In this study I found that the bond of +xis %ank with its customers is very
strong, because +xis %ank mainly focuses on retaining their customers.
This study finds that however +xis %ank is not the leading private sector
bank but its vast range of products and availability of options make it one of
the better banks in India.
The bank should focus on the semi urban and rural market because these
markets are very good opportunity for someone like +xis %ank which is in
growing face. Without expanding in these markets +xis %ank can not be a
leading bank so they should focus on this market.
The bank should focus on mass banking in order to increase their market
share. They should launch such products which would be within the reach of
the lower middle class
The bank should pay more attention on giving updates and should increase
the level of service providing because the competitors of axis are better in
this area.
The bank should try to increase the use of technology like mobile and net
banking among its customers.
- 77 -

RE<O&&ENDATION = S9GGESTIONS
>ostly service class persons prefer the axis bank in the comparison of
business and students and other class persons thus it needs to promote its
product and services that are offered mainly for the business class people
and students. %ecause these two class forms ma$or users of the banking
services.
+xis bank is normally not using properly for the current account so its
popularity ratio is Euite down. This bank normally using for the long term
planning like saving and F8.
This bank is not investing more into the marketing sector so I will suggest
that some of the part of income it investing in the advertising and marketing
sector.
Into the comparison of other bank its performance is Euite good but not an
effective so this may be doing the rates were down with some other
facilities.
