THE HOMETOWN HUDDLE

Locos Roll Through Hilltop Cadets In Season Opener

By: Kent Hutchison
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
MONTPELIER- In a preview of what will
be a Toledo Area Athletic Conference contest in 2016, the Montpelier Locomotives
and Hilltop Cadets battled toe to toe in
the trenches in the first half of the season
opener. However the home team struck
with a vengeance in the third quarter scoring 20 points en route to a 40-0 romp over
the Cadets.
The Cadets received the opening kickoff, and after a short return by Mikel Burlew, the offense began the night at the 32
yard line. Hilltop promptly went three and
out after a connection between quarterback Quinn Smith and Ryan Brooker left
the Cadets five yards shy of a first down.
Hilltop punter Justin Ashenfelters
fourth down kick was downed at the Montpelier 22 yard line, sending the Locos offense onto the field for the first time. The
stay was brief as Dallas Royer emerged
from the line of scrimmage and scampered
down the left sideline past the Cadet bench
for a 74 yard touchdown. Cody Caudills
extra point attempt split the uprights to
give the home team a 7-0 lead with 10:25
left on the first quarter clock.
Burlew returned the Caudill kick to
the Hilltop 39 yard line. The second possession started on a positive note for the
Cadets as Smith found Brooker again for a
five yard gain. After an incompletion Smith
hit Burlew for 8 yards and the initial first
down of the night for the red and white.
Two runs by Smith resulted in 6 yards,
only in the wrong direction. However the
Cadets moved the chains once again when
Tyler Suboski hauled in the Smith aerial
for a 20 yard pick up. With the ball now on
the Montpelier 33, a 7 yard loss on a sweep
by Suboski was sandwiched between two
Smith incompletions. Facing fourth and
17, Ashenfelter pinned the Locos deep in
their territory as the ball was downed at
the Montpelier 3 yard line.
With 5:49 left in the initial period Montpelier went back on the attack. Royer
picked up two yards, then Jordan Birdsall
ripped off an 11 yard gain. Quarterback
Dylan Snyder attempted his first pass of
the evening on first and ten, but his attempt to Caudill was broken up by Smith.
A toss sweep left for Birdsall resulted in a
65 yard pick up and moved the ball all the
way down to the Cadets 20 yard line. Just
when it appeared the Locos were poised to
put more points on the board, a first down
fumble by Royer halted the drive giving
Hilltop possession at their 19 yard stripe.
A 1 yard gain by Chase Masters was followed by a 5 yard pick up when Smith and
Suboski hooked up. David Smith picked
up a first down when a sweep left turned
into 7 positive yards. An offsides penalty
on the Locos left Hilltop with a first and
five from their 37 yard line. Just when it
appeared the Cadets had something going
offensively things headed south following
an incompletion, a gain of two by Quinn
Smith, and then another incompletion.
Ashenfelter punted once again and after
a short return by Caudill the Montpelier
offense was back in business at their 35,

with 2:00 left in the opening period.

Royer gained a yard on first down, and
then Snyder hit McCord for a 14 yard gain
and a Loco first down at midfield. The drive
and quarter ended there however after a
run by Birdsall resulted in a one yard loss
and Snyder was unable to connect on two
pass attempts. Snyders punt was fielded
by Burlew and returned to the Cadet 15
yard stripe.
The Montpelier defense continued to
hold the Hilltop offense in check as Quinn
Smith was dropped for a two yard loss.
David Smith gained 5 hard yards, but
Ashenfelter was called back on the field to
punt after a Smith pass intended for Steven Riley fell to the turf.
Caudill returned the kick to his teams
48, with 10:11 remaining in the first half.
The Locos methodically marched through
the Cadet defense. Royer had two runs
gaining 5 yards on each. Birdsall sprinted
around the left side once again, this time
for 27 more yards. With the ball all the way
down to the Hilltop 15, Royer was stopped
for no gain. Snyder heaved an attempt
into the end zone that was broken up David Smith. On third down Snyder dropped
back again, but was flushed out of the
pocket for a gain of one. Facing fourth and
9 from the Hilltop 14 yard line, the signal
caller took off again and sprinted through
the Cadet defense into the end zone. However, the celebration was short lived as
the official indicated an illegal formation
negated the score. Fourth and 14 turned
into elation for Hilltop when Dallas Timberman intercepted a Snyder pass intended for Alex Zuver and returned the pick to
the 24 yard line.
Hilltop moved the sticks on first down
when Smith connected with Quinton Miller
for a 13 yard gain. Smith hit Burlew for 7
more yards, then the duo lost 1 yard on
another completion. Facing third and 4
from the Cadet 42, Smith kept the snap
but was able to gain just half the distance
needed. Ashenfelter dropped back in punt
formation once again. However, this time
the kick was partially blocked by Hunter
McKelvey and was downed at the Locos 35
yard line with 4:14 left in the first half.
Montpelier consumed all but 16 seconds of the remaining time using nine running plays and just one pass. Royer gained
15 on first down, then Birdsall ran three
times to pick up a first down after gaining
1, 6, and then 9 yards. Royer joined the
party again as he picked up 14 more, then
hauled in a pass from Snyder good for 8
more yards and finally added a 1 yard run.
Facing third and 1 from the Hilltop nine,
Birdsall gained 6 more. Royer was stopped
at the one, and then Birdsall ended the
drive pounding his way across the goal line
with Ethan Dunson attached to his leg.
Caudills kick was good giving the Locos a
14-0 advantage at halftime.
After an outstanding halftime performance by both bands, the Locos Nate McCord covered the onside kick attempted by
the Cadets at the Montpelier 46 yard line.
The momentum gained by the score at
the end of the first half was obvious as the
Locos picked up where they left off to begin quarter number three. In just a lit-

tle over three minutes Royer and Birdsall

took turns carrying the ball to cover the
54 yards in seven running plays. Birdsall
picked up his second touchdown of the
night when he burst in from the 2 yard
line. Caudills kick was off the mark to the
left, but Montpelier extended their margin
to 20-0 with 8:43 left in the third quarter.
After battling mightily the first half, the
Cadets appeared to have the wind knocked
out of them in the second half. Their offense lost 1 yard in three plays and punted
once again on their first drive.
On the other hand, Montpelier was energized and this time needed just three
plays to cross the goal line once again. With
the ball on their 19 yard line, Royer added
seven to his total on first down. Birdsall
had his number called again. This time after gaining positive yardage, the run was
nullified by a holding penalty. The miscue
did little to impede the Locos progress as
Snyder joined the ground party ripping off
an 84 yard touchdown scamper of his own.
Caudills kick was true once again giving
Montpelier a comfortable 27-0 lead.
With time definitely not on their side,
Hilltop was forced to attempt to throw even
more to get back in the game. Following a
short kick, the Cadets had great field position at the Montpelier forty-three. Smith
found Miller for 3 yards, then Timberman
for 2. Hilltop appeared to be gaining a little
steam with the ball at the Locos 37 yard
line. However, two consecutive incompletions sent the offense to the sidelines.
The Hilltop defense kept battling. Royer added eight more, then a personal foul
on the Cadets moved the ball to the Hilltop 43 yard marker. A false start on the
Locos moved it back five, and then the
tide turned when a fumbled snap was recovered by Jakob Morris at the Cadets 49
yard line.
Smith connected again with Burlew,
this time for 4 yards. However, on the pass
attempt on second down McCord leveled
Smith with a crushing blow. As the pass
hit the ground, so did Smith. The sophomore quarterback lay on the ground for a
brief moment before popping back up. The
injury required the Cadets to insert freshman Kristian Grapengeter at the QB position. A run by Grapengeter resulted in a
2 yard loss. Smith courageously marched
back on to the field facing 4th and 12 from
the Hilltop 46 yard line. He dropped back
again and sent a pass in the direction of
David Smith. As the pass was in the air,
Smith was once again knocked forcefully
to the turf, this time by Birdsall.
A tired and overmatched Cadet defense
dug in once again. Birdsall got the call and
ripped off an 11 yard gain that was negated by a facemask on the offense. The pen-

alty moved the ball back to midfield with

50 seconds left in the quarter. That was
more than enough time for Snyder to connect with McCord for a 50 yard touchdown
pass. The Caudill kick was blocked as the
scoreboard read Montpelier 33, Hilltop 0.
With the lead being thirty points or
more, the new OHSAA rule of a running
clock was enacted for the rest of the game.
The Hilltop offense was unable to mount a
charge as they were held to only two possessions and eight plays the last quarter.
Montpelier substituted freely the final
twelve minutes and were able to add another score. Freshman Austin Grubb found
daylight from 36 yards out on a sweep left.
Caudill was accurate on his fourth extra
point attempt of the night to provide the
final margin of 40-0 in favor of the Locos.
The Locos not only dominated the
score, but the stat sheet as well amassing
500 yards of offense compared to 133 for
the Cadets. Montpelier shredded the Cadet
defense for 458 rushing yards. The trio of
Birdsall, Royer, and Snyder accounted for
419 yards. Birdsall carried the pigskin 15
times for 163 yards and two scores, Royer
picked up 169 yards and a touchdown on
17 totes of the pigskin, while Snyder was
just 15 yards shy of joining the century
club in three carries and crossed the goal
line two times. Grubb added 38 yards and
a score on his two tries, while Evan Friend
picked up 3 yards on his lone attempt.
Snyder went 3-10 passing for 71 yards,
with one touchdown and one interception.
McCord was on the receiving end of two
of the passes including a 50 yard scoring
strike, while Royer picked up the other reception for 8 yards.
The Montpelier defense limited the Hilltop ground game to negative 11 yards on
14 carries. David Smith gained 9 yards
on five tries and Masters had one attempt
for 1 yard. Quinn Smith kept the ball six
times and was dropped for minus 12 yards,
while Grapengeter and Suboski each had
one carry for minus 2 and minus 7 yards
respectively.
Smith attempted 36 passes completing
15 for 131 yards. Burlew was the favorite
target hauling in six throws for 56 yards,
while Suboski had 3 catches for 44 yards.
Grapengeter and Quinton Miller each had
two catches for 13 and 16 yards respectively.
With the win Montpelier moves to 1-0.
The Locos will host the potent offense of
the Wauseon Indians in the NWOAL opener for both teams on Friday, September 5.
Hilltop falls to 0-1 and will travel to Antwerp to battle the Archers. Both games
begin at 7:00 pm.

Bombers Burst With Potential, Lack In Execution At Antwerp

By: T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
August 29th - ANTWERP: As a new season of football
begins, the time has once again come to renew the unofficial rivalry between Edon and Antwerp.
Historically, this game has gone one of two ways, with
few exceptions. Either Antwerp has beaten Edon by a large
margin, or vice versa. So, when people not present at the
game hear that Edon lost 27-12, they may think the Bombers were lucky just to keep the score that close.
That is, until they talk to the ones who saw the game
in Antwerp.
Despite opening the game by giving up an 84 yard kick
return for a touchdown, run back by the Archers' Willie
Jones, the Bombers had plenty of opportunities to take
control of the game.
Indeed, the Edon offense, led by senior quarterback
Kaden Sapp, displayed explosive potential. Yet it seemed
they couldn't stay out of their own way. To begin, three
turnovers is going to hinder any team's chances of victory,
particularly when they take place right after, or even during, a big play.
Sapp was the catalyst of the Bomber attack, completing
14/29 of his passes for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns. Not
to mention he also led the team in rushing with 60 yards.
However, he also had a fumble lost and an interception.
The fumble came early in the second half, with Edon
driving. Sapp scrambled, eating up yards with his legs
when Archer sophomore defensive tackle Mike Tayler
stripped the ball from behind. The momentum shift led to

an Antwerp touchdown pass.

But it was the interception that was downright heartbreaking. In the middle of the fourth quarter, with Edon
needing more points on the board, the Bombers were driving in Archer territory. Coming to a fourth down and long,
Sapp looked to pass. He couldn't find an open man, so he
took off, weaving back and forth across the field, breaking
tackles in Herculean fashion and getting just enough yardage for a first down.
The next play he threw the ball right into the breadbasket of an Antwerp defender.
That's how most of the night went for Edon, who made
a lot of big plays, only to see them negated by errors and
penalties. And there were a lot of penalties, too.
The Bombers racked up 12 penalties for 105 yards.
Granted Antwerp also had 12 penalties for 123 yards, but
most of those came from pass interference calls due to
Bomber receivers routinely getting open. Edon's penalties
were mostly of the holding variety, as well as a personal
foul.
Holding was a major issue for the Bombers throughout
the game. It wiped out an incredible 20 yard touchdown
run by Blake Thiel in which he took to the sidelines and
broke what looked like a sure tackle to get into the endzone. Not only that, but It also wiped out a gutsy call by
Edon Head Coach Scott Staton. Deep into their own territory, on fourth and thirteen, the Bombers ran a fake punt
that saw Sapp rush for more than enough yardage for the
first. A hold undid the play, and only served to put Edon in
a deeper hole at fourth and 19.
The Bomber passing attack showed the potential to

match its namesake, with sophomore Preston Kingler leading the team in receptions, making 4 catches for 55 yards
and 2 touchdowns. Yet there were a lot of opportunities
left on the field. There were a few drops early on by the
Edon receivers, and a few of Sapp's passes were just a bit
off target, but that's to be expected during the first game of
the season. Also, there were a few communication issues
between the quarterback and his receivers that will need
to get worked out.
Defensively, the Bombers need to improve against the
run. As a unit, the Edon defenders gave up 141 yards and
2 touchdowns on 40 attempts, despite the best efforts senior linebacker Luke Price, who was all over the field. The
timing on which they gave up big plays was also demoralizing to the Bomber effort.
After a trick play which saw a pass fall just out of the
reach of a diving Sapp's fingertips, Antwerp took over at
the Edon 39 yard line. The next play, the Archer's senior fullback Nick Barnhouse took the ball 39 yards for
a touchdown. Again, this is just how things went for the
Bombers, whenever they made a mistake, Antwerp was
there to capitalize.
The bottom line is that Edon had a real chance to win
this game. They had more total offense, more first downs,
and simply looked more athletic. Yet there is a lot of work
to do if this team is going to cash in on its potential.
And they'd better work fast. Edgerton's coming to town
this week.

Wauseon Indians Led To

Victory With Strong First Half
By: Bill Bray
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
Wauseon August 29, 2014 - A tenacious defense and the arm and legs of Zac
Robinson led the Indians to a 31-7 season
opening win over Fairview Friday night.
The Indians needed just over four minutes to start the halfs scoring parade
when Robinson found Zach Johnson for a
5 yard touchdown strike at the 7:34 mark.
The Indians needed just 4 plays to go the
needed 62 yards. The drive was aided by
a 52-yard Robinson dash that put the ball
on the Fairview 10 yard line. Josh Whitcomb converted a strong PAT kick to put
the Indians up 7-0.
Wauseons second score was even
quicker with a two-play drive. Jacob Flory, running hard, ran for five yards to the
Wauseon 35. Robinson showcased his
speed and quickness once again as the
senior quarterback moved over the right
side of the line to sprint 65 yards for the
score. Whitcombs kick made it a 14-0
score with 3:50 remaining in the opening
quarter.
After another great defensive stance,
the Tribe were at it again. With 7:16 left
in the first half, Wauseon got their third
six pointer of the game. The Indians took
possession at their own 15. The 10 play,
85 yard drive, took 4:33 off the clock. It
resulted in a 20-yard run by Flory with
7:16 left in the half. Whitcomb remained
perfect and the Indians lead grew to 21-0.
The Indians D, Anthony Werder, Noah
Castle, Nate Suntken and Co. dropped
Andy Robinson short as Wauseon took
over on downs.
From the Wauseon 33, Robinson found
Jacob Newlove and the Senior flanker took
off down the northern sideline for a 67
yard touchdown. It was especially sweet

for Newlove who missed all of his junior

year with a knee injury.
Whitcombs kick again split the uprights and the Indians were in complete
control at 28-0 with 4:14 left in the second
stanza.
Things changed in the second half as
the only scoring by the two teams came
at the foot of Whitcomb who nailed a 23
yard field goal with 11:04 left in the fourth
quarter. The Farview score came with just
30 seconds left with a 18 yard pass play
against the Wauseon junior varsity defense.
Coach Travis Cooper was very aware
of the two different halves. It was a great
1st half, Cooper said. We laid an egg in
the 2nd half. Zac Robinson had a fantastic
game. He was very efficient in the passing
game and had some big runs. We have to
clean up the turnovers and the penalties.

The Indians finished with 371 yards of
total offense while allowing Fairview with
just 111. The defensive gem turned in
the by the Indians was evident in reading
game stats. Fairview had 30 rushing attempts and gained 52 yards. The Apache
also netted just 59 yards through the air.
Robinson added to his heroics by picking
off a Fairview pass. On offense Robinson
completed 12 of 13 passes for 176 yards
and two touchdowns. On the ground the
senior was just as impressive carrying
the ball 10 times for 123 yards with one
touchdown.

an early deficit to beat Wauseon in four
games.

meet the challenge, however, reversing

Fayette Attempts Comeback,

Drops Straight Sets To Swanton
August 25th - FAYETTE: Attempting
to defend their home court, the Fayette Eagles were unable to defeat the
Bulldogs of Swanton. Losing in three
games, the Eagles tried to rally late,
but could not begin a comeback run.
During game 1, Fayette played admirably, yet still couldnt pull ahead of
the Bulldogs. The Lady Eagles dropped
the set 18-25. In the second set, Swanton began to separate themselves from
the home team, controlling the game

25-12. Not backing down, The Eagles

of Fayette battled back in game 3,
making it the most competitive set of
the game. Swanton was able to hold
on, 25-22.
Hannah Machacek led the Eagles
with 9 assists, and had 2 digs as well.
Jessie Wheeler added 6 kills for Fayette. Paige Keefer had 11 digs in the
losing effort and 1 kill in the losing effort.

Montpelier Gains Momentum,

Fall Short At Patrick Henry
August 25th - PATRICK HENRY:
As the match went on, the Locomotives picked up steam. Patrick Henry
was able to fend off any hopes of a late
rally, and successfully defended their
home court in straight sets.
Montpelier started the match sluggishly, losing the first set 8-25. Game
2 was a different story, however, as
the Lady Locos came to life. Yet it still
wasnt enough and they again lost the
set, 17-25. In the third set the Locomotives gave their best performance of the

evening, but just couldnt get that first

win, dropping the set 20-25.
Thinking of her teammates first,
Lady Loco Hannah Blake dished out 8
assists to go along with her 2 kills and

August 25th - HICKSVILLE: Crossing
county lines, the Lady Cadets traveled

The road game was a difficult one for
Hilltop, though, as Hicksville took the
match in straight sets.
The first set saw Hicksville control
the game, 25-10. The Cadets bounced
back, giving the Aces all they could handle in game 2. Still, they fell short of vic-

August 26th - Ayersville: In their first
match of the season, North Central attempted to invade Ayersvilles home
court. This challenge proved to be a bit
too much for the Eagles, however, as
they lost in straight sets to the pilots.
The Lady Eagles got off to a rocky
start, dropping game 1, 6-25. Game 2

saw North Central improve, but still fall

short by a score of 13-25. In the last set,

August 26th-EDGERTON: Going on

the road can be tough, as the Lady Cadets of Hilltop learned. Even a teams
best efforts may not be enough to win on
an opponents home court, and Edgertons is no exception. As such, the Bulldogs used their home court advantage
and beat Hilltop in a hotly contested
match.
The Cadets came out strong, but
were unable to overtake Edgerton as
they lost the set 22-25. Momentum

swung in the Bulldogs favor, and the

girls of Hilltop dropped game 2, 13-25.
The Lady Cadets attempted to rebound,
but fell short in the third set, 19-25.
Ariana Brown nailed 8 kills, as well as
making 3 blocks and 2 digs for the Lady
Cadets. Felicity Jackson was vital to the
Hilltop scoring effort, making 10 assists

making 4 blocks.

August 28th-AYERSVILLE: The Lady

Blackbirds took a trip to Ayersville on
Thursday, with their sights set on taking
over the Pilots home court. This wasnt
meant to be, however, and, despite a
late run, Ayersville took the match in
straight sets.
During the first set, The Blackbirds
of Pettisville struggled to keep pace,
dropping the game to the Pilots, 11-25.
In game 2, the Pettisville girls tried to
rebound, but still fell short. They lost

lost the set and the game, 25-27.
Dana Fricke had 8 kills, 4 digs, and
an ace for Pettisville. Teammate Stephanie Hubby defended the court well for
the Blackbirds, managing an impressive
20 digs to go along with her 1 ace. Kate
Kauffman was the consummate team
player, making 13 assists in addition to
her 6 digs, 2 kills, and 1 block. Teagan

a difficult match for the girls of North

straight sets.
The match started out with momentum swinging back and forth, and both
teams of Lady Eagles took their turns
making runs. Fremont took game 1 on
one such run, as North Central lost the
set 21-25. Capitalizing on this shift in
momentum, Fremont took game 2 by a
score of 25-10. North Central climbed

And fight they did. The match was

24,000 Local Athletic Photos

By: Forrest R. Church, Publisher

THE VILLAGE REPORTER
THE BAD NEWS: The Village Reporter has provided free photo album
viewing online for years with the opportunity for our online readers to order prints at prices well below other
newspaper website pricing. These free
photo albums are composed largely of
local high school athletic events, school
activities, and community gatherings.
We have never really looked at this
service as something that would come
as a profit to our company but we did
desire to at least come close to covering our expenses. After over 330,000
photo views on our website and figuring our payroll time to stay at events
from start to finish, to edit photos, then
to upload them; we have found that we
are obtaining around $20 of expense
per $1 in photo prints being purchased
as a minimal fraction of 1% of website
visitors supported our efforts with an
order. Due to this lack of support, we
will be removing over 24,000 athletic,
school and community photos from
www.thevillagereporter.com in early
September, just a few days away as
our renewal for our service provider is
due and we cannot justify the large and
pricey annual expense. If you desire to
order any of these photos you will want
to do so now as once they are taken off
the web they are gone forever. We be-

lieve these albums contain the highest

volume of Edon Bomber, Montpelier
Locomotive, North Central Eagle, Hilltop Cadet, Stryker Panther, Fayette Eagle, Pettisville Blackbird and Wauseon
Indian athletic photos available for online viewing.
THE GOOD NEWS: Despite our
prices for photo reprints mentioned
above being the lowest around, we still
had some feedback that prices were too
expensive. With tens of thousands of
dollars invested into equipment and
equally that much placed into payroll
time this mindset is honestly a tough
pill to accept (that $4 for a photos was
too expensive when our competitions
pricing was from $5 to $30 per photo),
but we do understand times are tough
and we honor and always try to listen
to our readers. So going forward we
will begin to offer new photo galleries
at www.thevillagereporter.com with the
option to purchase a digital download
(vs a traditional photo print) for around
20% of what we charged for a physical photo (when shipping was included digital photos will arrive as an email link). Those purchasing can then
print their photos for a few cents at local photo labs, use them on facebook,
whatever they desire.

August 30th-McCLURE: Against
fields of eight and six teams respectively, the Pettisville girls and boys cross
country teams held their own at the Ostego Invitational.
It was the Lady Blackbirds who
shined at the event, however. Led by the
performance of two top ten finishers, the
girls of Pettisville took third place as a
team. Alexa Leppelmeier brought home
fourth place for Pettisville, finishing the
race at 21:44. Less than ten seconds
later, Elizabeth Sauder took sixth place

with a time of 21:52. Thirteenth place

belonged to Blackbird Nichole Foor
thanks to her time of 22:55.
The Pettisville boys also claimed
fourth place overall in the race. That
honor belonged to Kyle Lantz and his
time of 17:37. Teammate Jacob Hauter
completed the race just over a minute
later, at 18:40, to take twelfth place.
Ben Gray finished in twenty-second
place, running a 20:19.
These times were good enough for the
Blackbirds to finish fourth at the event.

Matt Miller Snags Another

Win At Oakshade Raceway
Matt Miller snapped Casey Noonans
string of four consecutive UMP Late Model feature wins at Oakshade Raceway by
picking up the checkered flag in the American Late Model Series (ALMS) presented by
Sunoco feature event on Saturday night. It
was Millers fourth feature win of the season at Oakshade.
After wrapping up an unprecedented
sixth UMP Late Model track championship the week before, Rusty Schlenk got
the advantage over Coleman, Michigans
Curtis Roberts at the start of the 30-lap
ALMS feature. Noonan got to the inside of
Schlenk a few laps later and battled side
by side for the lead. Bobby Hutchins, who
was running near the back of the pack,
spun just in front of the lead battle to bring
out the first caution flag of the race on lap
six. Schlenk decided to switch things up
and elected to restart on the inside lane
where Noonan had been running. That put
Noonan to the outside of Schlenk for the
double-file restart. That strategy wasnt
enough to keep Noonan from taking over
the race lead, which he did shortly after
the restart. Another caution on lap 10 after
Steve Kester slowed on the track with flat
tire benefited Matt Miller who had worked
his way into second. This allowed Miller to start alongside Noonan. After some
hard racing and a bit of contact between
both Miller and Noonan, Miller eventually took command and began to pull away
from Noonan on his way to picking up the
$2,000 win. Noonan came up on position
short of making it five in a row and had
to settle for a runner up finish. Schlenk
finished third followed by Brian Ruhlman
and Curtis Roberts.
Tim Line continued his UMP Sportsman domination at Oakshade Raceway
with his ninth consecutive feature win.
Line wasted no time finding the front of the
pack after starting on the outside of the
front row. Line opened up a sizable lead
that was wiped out a few times by cautions. Bob Krumm mounted a bit of a late
charge on the Monclova, Ohio driver but
didnt have enough to keep up. Krumm
took second with Bruce Stuart finishing
third. Jamie Grochowski was fourth with
Rich Ruff fifth.
Chis Sands led the first part of the
Bomber A Main after starting on the pole.
Holland, Ohios Jeff Foks worked his way
up into contention after starting seventh by
lap four. Just after Foks took over second,
Terry Rushlow and Curt Dickie got hooked
together while battling for third. Both cars
ended up in the backstretch wall. Three
laps later, Foks made a nice move around
Sands on the high side of turn four to take
the lead. Foks pulled away and picked up
his 10th A Main win of the season and put
a little more distance between himself and
Sands in the Bomber championship point
standings. Sands held off Tim Murphy and
Rick Dixon to keep from losing too much
ground with a second place finish. Adam
Lantz was fifth.
Brandon Myers and Brogan Rehklau
pulled away from the rest of the drivers
early in an exciting Best Performance Motorsports Compact feature event. Rehklau,
from Waldron, Michigan, got along side
Myers after a lap two restart. The two driv-

ers raced side by side for a lap and then

Rehklau ducked back in behind Myers.
Following another restart one lap later,
Rehklau, John Martis and Aaron Barrick
fanned out four-wide for the lead under
Myers. After things settled back down,
Myers was able to maintain the lead with
Rehklau pressuring until the final lap. As
the leaders approached a slower car, Myers had to check up and Rehklau pounced
to the inside to take the lead coming off of
turn two. Myers got back to the inside of
Rehklau on the backstretch and had the
advantage entering turn three, but Rehklau stayed in the gas coming off turn four
on the high side to take the win by just
a few feet ahead of Myers. Martis finished
a very close third. Barrick and Jeff Goodman rounded out the rest of the top five
finishers.
Carnage ruled in the Bomber B Main
that also had quite a few lead changes.
Chuck Stuckey was first to lead when Ted
Hill, who was running third, got crossed
up in turn three and collected Ethan Gehring, Terry Rump, Tim McNicol and Tim
Hancock. Gehring had escaped the first
incident without stopping and got his
spot back for the restart. He challenged
Stuckey for the lead and then spun down
the front stretch coming off turn four
and once again collected Rump and McNicol. The next caution involved the leaders when Stuckey got loose with the lead
and clipped second place Justin Gamber.
Things stacked up behind and another
caution flag flew. Gamber took over the
lead next with Tim Hancock and Clayton,
Michigans Donovan Paskan challenging.
Both Hancock and Paskan got by Gamber
with Paskan taking the lead. Hancock and
Paskan raced hard for the lead on the final
lap, but Hancock lost it in turn four and
spun in front of the field causing another
big pile up as Paskan took the checkered
flag. Chuck Faller avoided all the incidents to finish second. Gamber slammed
into Hancocks car in the final corner but
was able to finish third ahead of Taylor
Dippman and Truck Robertson.
Steve Morris got by Nathan Goodman
for the lead early in the Bomber C Main.
Unfortunately for Morris, things went from
bad to worse. He pushed up high coming off turn four and lost the lead back to
Goodman and then proceeded to do a complete 360 in turn one and again the same
lap in turn four which eventually brought
out the yellow flag for some other cars that
got stacked up behind. Goodman, out of
Waterloo, Indiana, went on to pick up the
feature. Dylan Hough was running right
behind Goodman on the final lap, but
spun coming off turn four. That allowed
Dave McMannamy to take second followed
by Robert Meinen, Henry Walls Jr. and
Jarrett Rendel.
Oakshade Raceway is set to host the
Allstar Performance Michigan Dirt Cup
Modifieds on Saturday, September 6th.
The 30-lap feature will pay $1,500 to win
and $200 to start. UMP Sportsmen, Bombers and Best Performance Motorsports
Compacts will also be in action. Gates
open at 4pm with racing at 7pm.
