Youth Leader Spotlight: Norma Camunez

Given recent tragedies including local drunk driving fatalities and a suicide that
has rocked the nation, it might not come as a surprise that some young people are
more motivated than ever to make a positive difference by keeping neighbors and
loved ones safe. Yet it's an incredible inspiration to grasp the story of a young
local woman who decided at the mere age of 16 to commit her life to building
trust and ensuring safety in her community through law enforcement.

Battle Mountain graduate Norma Camunez was headed down a gray path when a
productive encounter with her School Resource Officer, Eagle County Sheriff
Deputy Richards, known as "Officer Megan" by her students, encouraged a
complete refocus. Camunez recalls Richard's influence in the community helping

to win over several young people who previously had bad experiences with the
police, and were not necessarily on track to graduate high school.

Thanks in large part to Deputy Richard's encouragement, Camunez has been
involved with the Police Explorers program since her junior year in high school.
Police Explorers is a collaborative between local law enforcement entities
designed to bridge gaps between young people and the police. "Camunez was one
of the first leaders in the program and leveraged her involvement to help the
program grow," describes Vail Police Commander Daric Harvey. It hasn't always
been easy. Camunez speaks of defiance by her family and peers when she initially
expressed interest in working with law enforcement, and to the struggle of finding
friends that like to have a good time without alcohol.

The Red Ribbon Project

The Red Ribbon Project (RRP) provides comprehensive free programs for
adolescents in Eagle County with a focus on overall life skills, healthy relationships,
and positive youth development. The mission of the RRP is to promote healthier
lives by empowering the community to reduce teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS
and other sexually transmitted infections. This mission has recently evolved to
include teenage pregnancy prevention and other tough issues that adolescents face
during those pivotal years such as bullying, self-esteem, digital safety, substance
abuse and peer pressure.

Impactful youth programs inspire self-confidence and healthy decision making. RRP
aligns comprehensive programming with best practices that keeps kids safe and
aware of the consequences of risky behavior
and include character and life skills development as cornerstones of prevention.
Youth Skills Building & CUDATE! ("Take Care of Yourself"): Develop students' skills at
decision-making,
self-awareness, and conducting healthy relationships; all of which brings awareness,
understanding and
coping skills to issues surrounding sexual health.
"Life Works": This new program is designed to address the issues that youth
struggle with and gives them the tools to take ownership of their own lives and behaviors
in order to make better choices. In partnership with the Eagle County Sheriff's Office,
Life Works was created for students challenged by greater risk than the general
student population and offers targeted prevention and intervention strategies for
troubled youth. Life Works allows the school to put intervention into place around
behaviors that are destructive to the student: drug use, violence, behavior concerns, etc.
Fundraiser: The Red Ribbon Project fundraiser will take place on Friday September 12 from 6-10 pm at E-Town in
Edwards. There will be live music, door prizes and great silent auction items including an Epic Pass, Golf for three at
Red Sky Ranch, ski wear and various other great items. E-Town will be donating 10% of proceeds to Red Ribbon Project

collaborative program that builds leadership among the

services in rural communities throughout Colorado. The
event offers the opportunity to pursue additional funding
resources as well as access to high quality professional
development courses for human service, community, arts,
and environmental nonprofit organizations in Eagle,
Garfield, Lake, Pitkin and Summit counties.

For 23 years, local communities have worked to coordinate
Rural Philanthropy Days (RPD) in partnership with the
Community Resource Center, the Anschutz Family
Foundation and statewide grantmakers. The RPD program
provides a powerful opportunity for the state's most
influential funders and local grantseekers to strengthen
partnerships to better meet the needs of rural Colorado
communities. It results in increased access to resources,
relationships and skill building opportunities for important
local projects.

A Steering Committee of local nonprofit professionals,
regional funders, and community leaders will meet regularly
over the next twelve months to coordinate and execute the
event. This diverse group will identify quality program
offerings, conduct outreach, and garner local support of the
three-day event. For more information or to get involved,

Ute Springs Says Thanks & Continues School-year
Programs

Ute Springs Experiential Learning Center would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers and
participants who made our first summer of camp such a success! What an amazing summer we
had with each age group! We loved having leaders from our High School groups return to
engage and laugh with the middle and elementary campers. The blend of ages and personalities
enhanced everyone's experience. Numerous campers loved being at Mountain Valley Horse
Rescue for the service day and the overnight camp out! A midst the fun was a quiet curriculum that
steered the kids to think beyond their normal boundaries. They were prompted to contemplate who they are, how they want
to see their future, steps to create their vision of themselves and given tools to communicate better within all their
communities. We have plans to continue this thoughtful work with after-school programs, Mini-camps, in-school programs
and teacher development workshops.
Please contact Amy Ben-Horin (amy@UteSpringsELC.org) or Linda Miner
(Linda@UteSpringsELC.org) if you would like information or if you have a need we can help
you fill at school or your organization.
