Text: Power System Analysis and Design, 5
th
Ed. by Glover, Sarma and Overbye, Cengage Learning, 2012

Course Contents and Objective: This course will cover power fundamentals; power system components
(power transformers, alternators, transmission lines) and their modeling; steady-state operation of
transmission lines; power flow analysis and control; symmetrical components; balanced and unbalanced
faults; and distribution systems. The PowerWorld application software will be used throughout the course to
reinforce the use of analytic models and techniques developed in class to analyze the operation of power
systems and design control measures. At times, current issues of power/energy engineering related to smart
grid will be discussed.

Final Exam* 25% (Tuesday 12/10/2013, 8:00-9:50 AM)

*Around the middle of the semester, students will select a topic (not discussed in class, with mutual
agreement with the instructor) to investigate, write a report on, and give a presentation to the class at the end
of the semester. This will count as a part of their final exam. Another part of the final exam will be a 30-
minute oral exam for each student.
