BAHRA U"#$ERS#TY %a&na!hat' Soan Himacha (rade)h INDIAN RAILWAYS Is the fourth largest rail network in the world. Covers 64000 km of route along length & width of the country. Has 114,500 kilometres of track cover. ENERGY STATISTICS OF RAILWAYS Daily expenditure is about Rs. 100 cr out of which 18% is on fuels The railways alone used about 13000 million kWh of the electricity in India during the year 2010-11. Still the railways got the only 80% of electricity of what was actually needed. So railways suffer a shortage of the electricity. PROPOSED SOLUTIONS FOR SMART RAILS EXISTING CONDITION OF TRACKS The following figure shows the track design As evident from the figures in a typical Ballasted Track, which is commonly used, Rail Pads are used. Rail pads have an area of 200 cm2 These , originally called soles, are used with concrete ties. These ties are being used in modern tracks . Their function is to reduce the vibrations in concrete ties and reduce cracking of the ties. The following figure shows the use of rubber pads in tracks: USE OF PIEZOELECTRIC RAIL PADS One of the solutions involve the use of piezoelectric pads instead of the above illustrated rubber rail pads. These pads are similar in geometry as the original rubber pad When the train crosses over these pads, the downward force of the moving train causes these pads to deform and produce electricity. NETWORK OF PADS AND STORAGE OF PRODUCED ELECTRICITY These pads are joined with each other by the means of connecting wires. After a span of a few kilometers these wires are joined to a single carrier and end up in the grid or rechargeable battery. EXPECTED OUTPUT The expected output of the pads is 400 kWh from one kilometer of the stretch of the track. Thus the total output , if used in India can be 4.85 cr kWh. USES Though the output is low but still the electricity generated can be used for a number of purposes like: Lighting of the lamps in the interior areas of the country! Lighting of the railway crossings across the country! EXPECTED COST AND MAINTENANCE Since this technology is new so the cost of the project cannot be predicted But this technology is economical. The pads are very durable and they have an expected life of 30 The pads are very durable and they have an expected life of 30 years. Than you !
