Fury in Ferguson
Justice Dept. to Probe Ferguson PD Multiple reports surfaced Wednesday night with information from sources saying the U.S. Department of Justice was planning a full civil rights investigation into the Ferguson, Missouri Police Department. The investigation, which could be launched as early as this afternoon, will take a full-scale look into a police department with only three black officers in a city (Ferguson) dominated by 70% black residents, and their practices the past years, especially in the aftermath of Officer Darren Wilsons shooting of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown, which sparked protests in Ferguson, as well as other Missouri police departments. The Washington Post was the first to report such a probe, which will be separate from the DOJs already-ongoing civil rights investigation, as well as a local grand jury investigation, both of which are focusing solely on Michael Browns shooting.
Election Central
Pat Roberts Democratic Challenger Withdraws, Makes Race More Competitive Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) no longer has a Democratic challenger. And thats a bad thing for his re-election chances this November. Chad Taylor, the little-known Shawnee County District Attorney and Democratic nominee for the campaign against Roberts this November, dropped out from the race Wednesday afternoon. Taylors withdrawal, far from giving Roberts no challenge, creates an opening for businessman Greg Orman, an independent candidate with more funding and name recognition than Taylor. This could have a huge effect on the control of the Senate come January, with a recent poll showing Orman leading the incumbent in a match-up with just the two of them. Orman, a former Democrat, could do what has been considered impossible, and hasnt been done since 1932 and win a Senate seat in Kansas from Republican clutches. If he could do so, it would hand a gain to Democrats searching for anywhere they could tick up their numbers and keep the Senate. Before developments Wednesday, Kansas hadnt even been in play. One of Ormans advantages as Roberts main challenger is his bipartisan appeal; the independent has been endorsed by over 70 former Republican Kansas state legislators. With Taylor now out of the way (and many Democrats celebrating about it), the left will probably fall into line soon as well. This is certainly an unexpected turn of events, Orman said in a statement released Wednesday. Chad Taylor is a committed public servant. He ran an honorable campaign and worked hard, and I wish him and his family well.

In eastern times, here is President Obamas schedule (today entirely in Wales, five hours ahead): At 4:40 AM Eastern Time, President Obama visits a school in Newport, Wales with British Prime Minister David Cameron. At 6 AM, President Obama will join a NATO meeting on Ukraine, and at 8 AM will join a meeting of NATO leaders on Afghanistan.
