ThesameapparentlyappliesforHalogamesontheXboxOne;wevewaitedwhatfeelslikeages
(well,twoyears)andnowweregettingfouratonce.Ratherthanbebitterandcynicalaboutthis,
were simply emptying our calendar from November 11th onwards and embracing the fact that
Haloissettotakeoverourlivesoncemore.TheMasterChiefCollectionhadbeenrumouredlong
before Microsofts E3 presentation earlier this month but still finally seeing it announced felt
awesome.Runningthroughallfourcampaignswillbeanabsolutetreat(especiallygettingtorelive
Halo2inanewshinycoatofpaint)butitsthemultiplayerdetailsthathaveuswishingwecould
hibernateuntilNovember.TheMasterChiefCollectionwillfeatureeveryHalomapeverreleased,
allplayableintheiroriginalengineswhichisanamazingamountofmaps.Customplaylistswill
allowyoutocombinemapsfromeachgame,ashavingeverygameononediscallowstheMaster
ChiefCollectiontoseamlesslyswitchbetweendifferentenginestomakeeverymapworkaswell
astheydidbackintheday.Withmostseries,wedbegettingalotofgarbagemapsbutHalohas
neverletusdownwhenitcomestoqualityandquantity;theresdefinitelygoingtobesomehidden
gemsthatwevelongforgottenabout.Thislisthopefullyincludeseverybodysfavourites,butdue
tothesheervolumeofincrediblemapstheresboundtobeatleastoneexclusionwhichprobably
deservesaplace.Ifyoucanthinkofanymapthatdefinitelyshouldhavemadethecut,pleasefeel
freetoadditinviathecommentssectionbelow.Together,wecanbuildtheultimateHaloplaylist.
25.RatsNest(Halo3)
ReleasedintheHeroicMapPackforHalo3,RatsNestquicklybecameafanfavourite.Perfectly
symmetricalandbigenoughtoaccommodatevehicles,RatsNestisagreatmaptoteamupwith
abuddyandguntheenemydowninaWarthog.Preferyourclosequarterscombat?Thecentral
areabetweenthetwobasestendstoturnintoabigonfootbattlegroundasthetwoteamsfight
forcontroloftheRocketLauncherandSpartanLaserlocatedinthemiddleofthestructure.Asa
symmetricalmap,RatsNestisgreatfor8v8CaptureTheFlagactionandthemapsclevermixof
corridors and wide open spaces means all playstyles are welcome. Its probably best to start
learningthismapnow;itssuretobefeaturedheavilyinTheMasterChiefCollectionsobjective
basedplaylists.
24.Guardian (Halo3)
OftencomparedtoLockoutandAscensionfromHalo2,Guardianisoneofthemostmemorable
mapsfromHalo3.Infact,beforethereleaseofBlackout(acompleteremakeofLockout),Guardian
wasknownasthespiritualsuccessortoLockout.Itseasytoseewhy;bothmapsfeatureahectic
centralplatformwithavarietyofpathsandcorridorstotraverseifdivingstraightinisntyourstyle.
If you like your weapons big and powerful, the Gravity Hammer spawns just below the central
platform, and with close range combat almost guaranteed, wielding the Grav Hammer givesan
immediateadvantage.KingOfTheHillonherewasarealtreat,especiallywhenthehillmovedto
themiddle,compoundingeveryoneintothetinyspaceseenabove.Itsabsolutechaos.
23.Damnation/Penance(Halo:CE)
As Damnation beautifully demonstrates, the Covenant love their purple architecture. Set in a
Covenant facility (essentially an evil lair for the bad guys), Damnation creates more vertical
gameplaythanmostothermaps.Controllingthehighbaseisimperativeifyourteamistosucceed
as it allows you to pick your enemy off from relative safety whilst they scramble around below.
Muchoftheactionisbasedaroundthepitareawherethreestreamsofwaterfallfromtheceiling
intoaseeminglybottomlesshole.ThreewalkwayshangprecariouslyoverthepitbutwithaRocket
Launcherupforgrabs,itmightbeworthtestingyournerveifyourenotafraidofheights.Great
forobjectivegametypesandSlayermodesalike,Damnations(orPenanceasitwasrebrandedin
theAnniversaryremake)purpleinteriorswillundoubtedlybeetchedinyourmindverysoonafter
playing.
22.Elongation(Halo2)
SetonaUNSCfreighter,Elongationsmostnoticeablefeatureisitstwolongcorridorswhichmake
upalmosttheentiretyofthemap.AbrighterremakeofHalo:CEsLongest,Elongationisatight
mapwhichresultsinheavyactionrightfromthefirstspawn.Thereslittlecover,asidefromgaps
inthedividingwallbetweenthetwocorridorsandtheboxesbeingcarriedthroughthelevelbythe
conveyorbelts,sogrenadesareanamazinglylethalweaponhere;theyrebasicallypocketnuclear
bombs.Accordingto343Industries,sixofHalo2smapswillbereceivingacompleteremakeinthe
MasterChiefCollection,andElongationcouldverywellbedueanoverhaul.Itsaperfectmapfor
objectivegametypesbetweentwosmallteams(anythingmorethan4v4wouldbeinsane)andits
definitelyworthrevisitingthisNovember.
21.Prisoner/Solitary (Halo:CE)
Another vertical map from the first Halo, Prisoner (or Solitary in the Anniversary remake) is
probably one of the smallest maps in Halo history. Its made up of one tall room with bridges,
walkwaysandplatformsspanningthreelevels.Rightatthetopisasniperspawnwhichallowsyou
toseenearlytheentiremap,suddenlymakingopenspacesfeelveryvulnerable.Slayerisagood
gametypeforthismap(ifyoulikefastpacedaction,anyway);thelowerlevelquicklybecomesa
warzone as players rain grenades down from above. Team games also work surprisingly well,
althoughfriendlyfireisanearcertaintyonamapthissmall.Ofcourse,youcouldalwayscreatea
customgametoreallybringchaostoPrisonera16manSlayerwithnothingbutRocketLaunchers
soundgood?Hopeyoulikerespawning.
20.Midship/Heretic(Halo2)
AcircularmapsetonaCovenantwarship,Midship(orHereticinHalo3)isanothertightmapwhich
features plenty of close quarters combat. The Energy Sword hanging on the arenas highest
platformisvitalhere;gainingcontrolofitcanbeamassiveadvantagewhentheenemyisaround
every corner. Generally renowned as one of the best maps for Oddball, Midships three levels
encourageyoutokeeponthemove,especiallywhencarryingtheskull.Theresarealexhilaration
toflyingaroundthismapwhileeveryotherSpartaninthegamechasesyou,especiallywhenthe
next corner you turn around could be your last. Midship or Heretic will definitely be a popular
featureintheMasterChiefCollectionsLoneWolvesplaylist.
19.Exile(Halo4)
AsfunasHaloschaoticsmallmapsare,sometimesweyearnforlargerscalewarfare.Luckily,Halo
featuressomegreatlargemapstoo,likeExilefromHalo4.Initially,themapisaracetocontrolthe
Scorpionwhichislocatedatonebase;capturingthehulkingtankcangetyourteamofftoagreat
start.WithaBansheeand/oraMantisalsospawning(dependingonthegametype),Exileisclearly
designedforvehiclewarfare,althoughtheresplentyofactionfortheonfootSpartantoo.Exileis
anexcellentmaptotryoneof343snewgametypesDominion.Teamsfighttocontrolthreebases
whichfortifyandprovidesuppliesovertime,providingthosewithoutvehiclesplentyoftoolsto
dispose of those with them. It may not be as balanced as most other maps but Exile will add a
welcomedoseofvarietytotheMasterChiefCollection.
18.Construct(Halo3)
TheBattleRifleisoneofthemostdominantweaponsinHalo3andConstructisperfectlysuited
fortheweapon.Thesizeofthemap(largebutnotenormous)meansthatmidrangebattlestake
placealloverthemapandbeingskilledwiththeBattleRifleinthosescenariosiskey.Thatswhy
ConstructgainedsuchabigfollowinginHalo3sMLGplaylist;itssizeandmultilevelbuildmakes
itperfectforhighlycontestedTeamSlayermatches.ThemostdominatingfeatureinConstructis
thegiant,yellowGravityLiftinthecentreofthemap.Leadingfromtheverybottomtothevery
top,theGravLifttendstobewheremostoftheactiontakesplaceasplayersuseittoascendthe
mapslevelsquickly.Bewarethough,playerslovetothrowgrenadesthroughittootocatchthose
atthetopunaware.
17.Terminal(Halo2)
Anotherlarge,asymmetricalmap,TerminalarrivedinHalo2sMaptacularMapPackandquickly
becameafirmfavouritethankstoauniquelookandfeel.SetonEarthinatrainstation,Terminal
featuresawideopencourtyard,anelevatedtrackwithmovingtrainsandsomewhatbizarrely
aparkinggarage,makingTerminaloneofveryfewmapsintheHalouniversetobesetoncivilian
grounds.ThesizeandshapeofthemapmakesitperfectforoneflagCTFgames,especiallywhen
theWraithisaddedtothemix.Assaultwhereoneteamistaskedwithplantingabombinthe
enemysbaseisalsoagreatgametypetoplayonTerminalasopportunisticplayerscansneakthe
bombdownonepathwhilsttherestoftheteamcreatesalouddistractionattheenemysfront
door.Mindthegapthough,thosetrainsarelethal.
16.Sandtrap(Halo3)
Oneofthebiggestmapsreleasedtodate,SandtrapisidealforBigTeamBattleplaylists.TeamSlayer,
AssaultandCaptureTheFlagallworkgreathere,thankstotheintroductionoftheElephanta
movable base which has an array of turrets and weaponry to help defend the flag/bombpoint
located on it. Hopefully the Elephant is reintroduced in the Master Chief Collection its an
amazinglyuniquevehiclewhichhassadlybeenunderutilisedintheHalouniversesofar.Awayfrom
thevehicles,thisisanothermapwhereskillwiththeBattleRifleisessential;themajorityofthe
mapismadeupofwideopenspaces,makingAssaultRiflesandShotgunsineffective.TheBanshee
canbeamajornuisanceonthismapasthereslittlecovertohidefromthefierybluewrathofthe
Bansheescannons;beingagoodshotwiththeSpartanLasercanworkwondershere.
15.Turf(Halo2)
Like Terminal, Turf wins points for beinga highly originallooking map. Set inthe suburbs of Old
Mombasa,Turfsmainbattlegroundsarearoadandsomerooftops.DespitefeaturingaWarthog,
Turf is actually a really small map, as the background which features the bridge Master Chief
crosses in the campaign level Metropolis making it seem bigger than it is. The most notable
featureofthemapisthecollapsedScarabwhichcoversonecornerofthemap.Despitethis,much
oftheactionisfocusedontheroadwiththeoverlookingrooftopscreatingaperfectspottoget
thejumponyouropponents.Withtightalleywaysformingtherestofthemap,Turfisagreatmap
forsmallteamgames,especiallyKingOfTheHillwhichforcesplayerstomovearoundinsteadof
campinginonespot.
14.Haven(Halo4)
HavenissetonaForerunnerspire(theForerunnersareahighlyadvancedspeciesintheHaloworld)
whichisprobablywhyeverythinglookssosleekandbeautiful.Italsoseemstohavebeeninspired
by other classic maps in the Halo series (Guardian in particular); thats probably why its one of
Halo 4s best maps. Like most Halo maps, Haven attracts a lot of action to its central platform,
despitealackofpowerweaponstocollect.Teamstendtobattleitoutforcontrolofthemiddleof
thismapwithexplosivesbeingespeciallyeffective,thankstoalackofprotection.Thelowerlevel
alsoinvitesalotofactionasenterprisingplayerswaitintheshadowsforunsuspectingopponents
to wander past. Its not a great objective map butTeam Slayer on Haven tends to be a great
combination.
13.BattleCreek/BeaverCreek(Halo:CE)
BattleCreek(orBeaverCreekinHalo2)isnttheonlyHalomapfeaturingtwobasesinaboxcanyon
(moreonthatlater)butitsdefinitelythesmallest.Itsalsoingeniouslynamed;theresacreekand
itsthesettingforseveralhugebattles(notquitesurewherethebeaverpartcomesfromthough).
All jokes aside, Battle Creek is perfectly built for intense Capture The Flag games. Its incredibly
symmetricalwithabaseoneithersideofthecreekandtheresseveralwaysforplayerstosneakin
andoutastheybidtoescapewiththeflag.Thosemoreinterestedinkillingwillwanttobattleit
outoverthelargearchwhichcrossesthecreek;itsaperfectspottopickenemiesofffrom.This
willdefinitelybeapopularmapintheMasterChiefCollectionifnotforthelayoutitself,butfor
effortlesslypullingonthenostalgiastrings.
12.HighGround(Halo3)
ThiswillprobablycomeasamajorshockbutHighGroundfeaturesabaseperchedontopofahill,
makingitperfectforonesidedobjectivegameslikeOneBombandOneFlagCTF.Toaiddefenders,
thegatestothebasecanbeshut(theyneedtobeopenedfrominsideifattackerswishtoenter
withvehicles)andturretslinethewalltopickplayersoffwithease.Ofcourse,theresotherways
intothebase.Thefrontwallisbrokenononeside,allowingattackerstosneakinwithease,whilst
anexteriorbunkerentranceleadsrightintothemiddleofthebaseforcingthedefenderstocover
alotofgroundtopreventamassbreakin.Plus,withaSniperRifle,aSpartanLaserandaRocket
Launcherupforgrabs,HighGroundoffersplentyofexcitement,nomatterwhatparticulargame
typeisplayedonit.
11.Valhalla/Ragnarok(Halo3)
Ohlook,amapfeaturingtwobasesinaboxedcanyon!Valhalla(orRagnarokintheHalo4remake)
wascreatedasaspinoffofHaloclassicBloodGulchanditseasytoseewhereBungiewantedto
mix the map up. A big hill in the middle prevents players from sniping across the entire map,
allowing onfoot players to survive for (a little bit) longer. Two bases obviously makes Valhalla a
greatCTFmapbutitsalsoaprettyfunKingOfTheHillmaptoo,especiallywhenthehillislocated
on the well, hill. Vehicles on Valhalla are hugely important too with Wraiths, Banshees and
Warthogsallcapableofdishingoutdeathwithease;itmakescapturingthemiddlehillallthemore
importantastheSpartanLaserthatspawnsthereisafantasticcountertoannoyingvehicleusers.
10.Headlong/Breakneck(Halo2)
AnothermapbasedonthefamiliargroundofPlanetEarth,Headlong(BreakneckintheAnniversary
remake)isanamazinglybigmapwhichonlyfeaturesinBigTeamBattleplaylists.Gettingaroundis
made easier with the teleporters dotted around the map; Warthogs are also available for those
wholiketotravelviamoretraditionalmethods.Headlongsimmensesizemakessnipingahugely
importantskilltoutilise;pickingenemiesofffromtheheightsoftheconstructiontowerisagreat
way to score some quick points for your team. While the Energy Sword can be picked up on
Headlong,itmightactuallybecomeaburden;youllveryrarelybeinrangetouseitandyoumight
endupwithaheadfullofleadforyourtroubles.
9.Sidewinder/Avalanche(Halo:CE)
Sidewinder (it was also remade as Avalanche for Halo 3) is one of very few maps in the Halo
universetobeuniquelyshaped;themapisabighorseshoewiththetwobasessituatedrightnext
toeachother,separatedbyawallofice.Theicynatureofthislevelactuallyaddstotheexcitement
ofvehiclesasWarthogsslideeasily,makingthemhardertocontrolwhilstalsomakingSplatterkills
morefun.Again,thesizeofSidewindermeansthatbeingskilledinlongdistancecombatwillgive
youastrongadvantage.Thetunnelsinthemiddleofthemapwillbethemainsourceofactionfor
thoseonfoot,whilstvehicleswillbattleonthelargeicepatchatthecentreofthemap,meaning
bigteamgamesonSidewinderalwaysprovideconstantaction.TheAvalancheremakeisgoodbut
nothingwilleverbeatourfirstfrozenstepsontoSidewinder.
8.Adrift(Halo4)
It might look like something out of Metal Gear Solid but Adrift is another great map from 343
Industries first major step into the Halo Universe. Completely square, Adrift is made up of one
largecentralareaborderedbycorridorsandpathways.Thesizeofthemapmakesclosequarters
combatessentialandwatchingyourbackisadvisedasplayershaveatendencytosneakuponyou
here.ThecentralareagetsparticularlyhecticasplayersfightforcontroloftheEnergySword,but
adeathtrackingheatmapforAdriftwouldprobablyshowanevenspreadallover;itsthesortof
mapwheretheresalwayssomethinggoingon.KingOfTheHillisagreatgametypeforAdriftasit
confinestheactiontooneareaatatimewhilefreeforallOddballcanleadtochasesacrossthe
entiremap,thankstothelinearcorridorsandweavingpathways.
7.IvoryTower(Halo2)
ControllingthehighgroundiskeyonmostofHalosmapsbutonIvoryTower(remadeasReflection
forHalo:Reach),itsvitalifyouretobesuccessful.IvoryTowershighestlevelaffordsagreatview
acrosstherestofthemap,althoughitsalsoincrediblyvulnerabletoattackwiththreedifferent
pathsleadingtoit.Theelevatoratthebackofthemapisparticularlydangerous;cleverplayerswill
ascend silently while their opponents are distracted with sniping from the raised platform. The
RocketLauncherlocatedatthebottomofthemapisparticularlylethalheretoo;playerswilltend
togroupupandsupporteachother,allowingawellplacedrockettodecimateentireteamsatonce.
IvoryTowerworksbestwithstandardSlayergametypesbutOneFlagCTFandOneBombcanalso
workhere,makingforspeedygameswhichrequireplayerstobeontheirtoesconstantly.
6.LastResort/Zanzibar(Halo3)
Another map which is ideal for onesided objective games, Last Resort (previously known as
Zanzibar in Halo 2) is set in a large coastal base with plenty of space for big battles between
attackersanddefenders.Themostdominatingfeatureofthemapisthegiantwheelrightinthe
middle of the base; it doesnt add a lot gameplaywise but it looks cool. It does hide Active
Camouflagethough,sothatssomething.Thespaciousgroundfloorisperfectforbattlesbetween
vehicleswhileonfootplayerswillbebattlingonthewalkwayslinkingthebasewiththeouterwall.
Camp Froman, a bunker located on one side of the base, is also highly contested as a valuable
SniperRiflespawnsthere;controllingthisspawncanbethedifferencebetweengloriousvictory
andbitterdefeat.
5.HangEmHigh/Tombstone/HighNoon(Halo:
CE)
EasilyoneofHalosmosticonicmaps,HangEmHighhasbeenremadeseveraltimes(asyoucan
seefromthetitleofthissection)asplayersjustcantgetenoughofit.Itsamediumsizedmap
withmultiplelevelswhichisaperfectbattlegroundforHalosmostinfamousweaponthepistol.
Witha2xscopeattached,Halospistolwasalethalweaponandforwhateverreason,HangEm
High was a great map for1v1 duels. Themap featuresa Sniper Rifleon its upper levels, making
openspacesadangerousplacetobe.Luckily,thelowerlevelshaveplentyofcover,thankstothe
smallpillarscoveringtheground.ThemixtureofwalkwaysandopenspacesmakesHangEmHigh
agreatCTFmap;flagcarrierswillconstantlybeindanger,makingteamworkamust.
4.ThePit/Pitfall(Halo3)
ThegreatthingaboutThePitisthatitworkssowellforsomanydifferentgametypesatthesame
timethemapissymmetricalsoCaptureTheFlagworkswell;itsmediumsizedwithavarietyof
combatzonessoSlayerworkswell;andtheresenoughtwistsandturnsinthemaptomakeKing
OfTheHillandOddballthrillingtoo.Theresalsoagreatmixofpowerweaponstofightoverwith
aSniperRifleandaRocketLauncherlocatedinthemiddleofthemap,alongwithanOvershield
and Active Camo; getting to these first will quickly ease your team into the lead. The Pit is also
popularwithMLGplaylistsasitsperfectlysizedforBattleRiflebattleswithavarietyoflevelsgiving
playerswiththehighgroundabigadvantage.Nomatterwhatplaylistyoureplanningondiving
intowiththeMasterChiefCollection,ThePitissuretofeatureheavilyandyoushouldbethankful
forthat.
3.Ascension(Halo2)
Itsunsurprisingthat343IndustrieswouldchoosetoshowoffaremadeversionofAscensionto
get people excited for the Master Chief Collection; its definitely one of Halos finest maps. Its
relativelysimpleindesignbutdontletthatputyouoff;Ascensionhasalwaysbeenareallyexciting
map.Themiddledishseemslikeanobviousbattlegroundbutplayerstendtofightinthetowers
surrounding the central platform as controlling the Sniper Rifles on this map can make all the
difference. One custom game type known as Tower Of Power encourages this by handing
playersShotgunsandchargingthemwithattackinganddefendingthebiggertoweronthemap.
Itsan8v8gametypetoosoitgetspleasantlyhecticquickly.JustlikeallthebestHalomaps,every
game typeis suitable for Ascension but King Of The Hill deserves a special mention. The hill
generally moves from open space to open space, making gathering points within the hills
boundariesariskygame.Plus,someoneisboundtobeholdingthemapsRocketLauncherandyou
dontwanttobeinthefiringlineforthatone.Withabrandnewlookandprobablyafewgameplay
reworks,AscensionisboundtogodownastormwiththeHalocommunity,makingitoneofthe
mosteagerlyanticipatedmapsfortheMasterChiefCollection.
2.Lockout/Blackout(Halo2)
DeterminingonemapasthebestinHaloisatoughtaskbutLockoutisadefinitecontender.Weve
alreadyseenitsinfluenceonothermapsintheHalofranchisebutnothingcomparestotheoriginal.
LockoutismassivelypopularwiththeHalocommunityanditsuitsmostSlayerbasedgametypes
perfectly;TeamSnipersandTeamSWAT(whichremovesshields,makingeachshotwiththeBattle
Rifleaonehitkill)arefirmfavouritesforLockout.Aswithothermapsthatfeatureamixoftight
corridors and open spaces, King Of The Hill is a blast with grenades and Energy Swords flying
everywhere.Oddballcanleadtosomeintensechasesasplayersdropthroughholesintheground;
jumpoffoftowersandflyupgravliftstoseparatethemselvesfromtheiropponents.TeamSlayer
worksreallywellheretooasthedesignofthelevelmakesiteasyforplayerstosneakuponeach
other; having backup helps massively. Happily, Lockout is already confirmed to be receiving the
AnniversaryremaketreatmentwhichshouldbeexcitingnewsforanyHaloplayer.Evenifyouve
neverplayeditbefore(which,honestly,wouldbeimpressive),Lockoutsdesignwillleavealasting
impressionandtheactionitprovidesisunlikeanythingyourelikelytoseeinanothergame.
1.BloodGulch/Coagulation(Halo:CE)
2Fort.DE_Dust2.FacingWorlds.Somemapsaresoiconicthatweimmediatelypicturethemwhen
wehearthenameofagame.Aswevealreadyseen,Halohasatonofphenomenalmapsbutnone
willeverdethroneBloodGulch;itssimplythebestmaptheserieswilleverknow.Yes,itsamap
featuringtwobasesinaboxedcanyon(wherehaveyoureadthatbefore?)butitstheoriginalmap
featuring two bases in a box canyon. Obviously, long range combat rules this dusty
environmentbutgettingupclosewithplayersisprettycommontoo,especiallyifyourerunning
aroundtryingtoaidyourteambycapturingflagsordeliveringbombs.Thesmallpathsaroundthe
canyons edge are contested heavily by those onfoot and even the hills in the middle of the
battlefieldcanendupcoveredinSpartancorpses.ItgoeswithoutsayingthatCaptureTheFlagis
greatforBloodGulchbuttheresalsoafewothergametypesthatareinsanelyfuntotryouthere.
TeamSniperswilltestyourskillstothemaxwhileevensillymodeslikeRocketRace(whereplayers
race around the map on a Mongoose) will have you grinning from ear to ear. The size of Blood
Gulchmakesitincrediblyversatiletoo;nearlyanygametypecouldworkherewithenoughplayers.
DoyouneedfurtherproofofBloodGulchsprestige?Itsbeenremadecountlesstimes(rereleased
inHalo2asCoagulation;remadeintheRTSspinoffHaloWars;plusitsincludedinHalo:Reachs
enormousForgeWorld)anditfeaturesheavilyinoneofthemostlegendarymachinimacreations
