SCOPE IN PHARMACY

In educational field: if we consider in INDIA, we have Engineering and

Medical as a batter option as a professional degree. But when we go through
Engineering, we see that no. of collages increases as per growth rate of population.
As the no. of collages increases, the quality of education decreases. Along with
high fees, saturation in jobs, and always a common problem i.e. the jobs we are
getting are recession sensitive. If we consider a next option, Medical field, is this
field recession free but still have problems like: limited no. of seats as per collages
in states. But if we getting the seat than it is difficult for everyone to pay a huge
amount of fees structure of collages. Apart from both a new branch: Pharmacy is
having a batter scope than both, and mainly is here limitation of seats are not
occurs but having a suitable fee structure, which is favorable for everyone.
Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the
chemical sciences and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of
pharmaceutical drugs. It is also the art and science of preparing and dispensing
medications and the provision of drug-related information to the public. It involves
the interpretation of prescription orders; the compounding, labeling, and dispensing
of drugs and devices; drug product selection and drug utilization reviews; patient
monitoring and intervention; and drug provisions of cognitive services related the
use of medications and devices. The current physiology or approach to
professional practice in pharmacy is designated as pharmaceutical care. This
concept holds that the important role of the pharmacist is the responsible
provision of drug therapy for the purpose of achieving definite outcomes that
improve a patients quality of life.
The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as
compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern
services related to health care, including clinical services, reviewing medications
for safety and efficiency, and providing drug information. An establishment in
which pharmacy is practiced is called as Pharmacy, Chemist`s or Drugstore. In
United States and Canada, drug stores commonly sale not only medicines, but also
miscellaneous items such as candy (sweets), cosmetics, and magazines, as well as
light refreshments or groceries. In its investigation of herbal and chemical
ingredients, the work of the pharma may be regarded as a precursor of the modern
sciences of chemistry and Pharmacology, prior to the scientific method.
The field of pharmacy can generally be divided into three primary
disciplines: - 1. Pharmaceutics, 2. Medicinal chemistry and Pharmacognosy,
3. Pharmacy Practice. The boundaries between these disciplines and with other
sciences, such as Biochemistry, are not always clear-cut; and often, collaborative
teams from various disciplines research together. Pharmacology is sometimes
considered a fourth discipline of pharmacy. Although pharmacology is essential to
the study of pharmacy. It is not specific to pharmacy. Therefore it is usually
considered to be a field of the broader sciences. Also a new discipline,
Pharmacoinformatics, for systematic drug discovery and development with
efficiency and safety.
In the professionals; two branches are entertained, they are Pharmacists
and Pharmacy technicians. Pharmacists are healthcare professionals with
specialized education and training who perform various roles to ensure optimal
health outcomes for their patients through proper medication use. Pharmacists may
also be small-business proprietors, owning the pharmacy in which they practice.
Pharmacists are represented internationally by the International Pharmaceutical
Federation (FIP), at national level by professional organizations such as the
Royal Pharmaceutical Society in UK, the Pharmacy Guild of Australia (PGA),
and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). Pharmacy technicians
support the work of Pharmacists and other health professionals by performing a
variety of pharmacy related functions, including dispensing prescription drugs and
other medical devices to patients and instructing on their use. They may also
perform administrative duties in pharmaceutical practice.
Types of pharmacy practice areas :- Pharmacists practice in variety of
areas including community pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, extended care facilities,
psychiatric hospitals, and regulatory agencies .
1. COMMUNITY PHARMACY: A pharmacy (commonly in Australia, New
Zealand and UK or drug store in North America; retail pharmacy in industry
terminology.) is place where most pharmacists practice the profession of
pharmacy. Community pharmacies usually consist of a retail store front with a
dispensary where medications are stored and dispensed. Pharmacies are typically
required to have the owner of pharmacy must be a registered pharmacists.
2. HOSPITAL PHARMACY: Pharmacy within hospitals differs considerably
from community pharmacies. Some pharmacists in hospitals pharmacies may have
more complex clinical medication management issues whereas pharmacists in
community pharmacies often have more complex business and customer relations
issues.
3. CLINICAL PHARMACY: Pharmacists provide direct patient care services
that optimize the use of medication and promotes health, wellness, and disease
prevention. Clinical Pharmacists care for patients in all health care setting, but the
clinical pharmacy movement initially began inside hospitals and clinics. They are
creating a comprehensive drug therapy plan for patient-specific problem,
identifying goals of therapy and reviewing all prescribed medication prior to
dispensing and administration to the patients.
4. CONSULTANT PHARMACY: Consultant pharmacy practice focuses more
on medication regimen review than on actual dispensing of drugs. Consultant
pharmacists most typically work in nursing homes.
5. INDUSTRIAL PHARMACY: In industrial pharmacy: dosage forms of variety
of drugs are forming. For industrial pharmacy, b.pharm degree (graduation) must
be required. In the industrial sector so many branches are open for pharmacists.
Like packaging, R & D, etc.
6. NUCLEAR PHARMACY: Nuclear pharmacy focuses on preparing radioactive
materials for diagnostic tests and for treating certain diseases. Nuclear pharmacist
undergo additional training specific to handling radioactive materials. Nuclear
pharmacists typically do not interact directly with patients.
Some other is academics, defense, etc.
Future in pharmacy:- In the coming decades, pharmacists are expected
to become more integral within the health care system. Rather than simply
dispensing medication, pharmacists are increasingly expected to be compensated
for their patient care skills. The result is a reconciliation of medication and patient
health outcomes and decreased costs to the health care system. Haryana is selected
as a centre to set up a bio-technology park along with R & D and Pharma Industry
Park. Job opportunities for pharmacists are pharmacists are expected to grow about
as fast as the average for all occupations, mainly due to the increased
pharmaceutical needs of a larger and older population. Other factors likely to
increase demand for pharmacists include the likelihood of scientific advances that
will provide more drug products for the prevention diagnosis and treatment of
disease.
It is concluded from the above that, with the development of specific and
potent synthetic drugs, the emphasis of the pharmacist`s responsibility has moved
substantially towards the utilization of scientific knowledge in the proper use of
modern medicines and the protection of public against dangers that are inherent in
their use. Pharmacists are employed in regulatory control and drug management,
community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, academic
activities, training of other health workers, and research. In all these fields, their
aim is to ensure optimum drug therapy, both by contributing to the preparation,
supply and control of medicines and associated and by providing information and
advice to those who prescribe or use pharmaceutical products.
