St James the Just

St James the Just was also known as St James Adelphotheos St James
the Brother of our Lord.
He was the First Bishop (Patriarch) of Jerusalem.
According to the Protoevangelion of St James, he was the (eldest) son of
St Joseph the Betrothed and Salome, (who had been the sister of St
Anna and aunt to our Lady
Theotokos.)
St James and his siblings St Jude, St
Joses, St Simon, St Salome (mother of
St James & St John the Theologian),
Esther and another sister named
Martha, Lydia, Thamar or Assia
were our Lady Theotokos cousins
who, by Judaic Law, became Her
Children when She was Betrothed
to their father Her very elderly
Uncle, who was Her Righteous
Guardian and Protector chosen by
God and the Temple Priests to
safeguard Her Sacred Vow of
Chastity.
St James wrote an Epistle, which is included in the New Covenant
Testament.
St James is commemorated on 23 October, 26 December and the on the
first Sunday after the Nativity of Christ, along with St David the King,
Prophet and Psalmist, and St Joseph the Betrothed; and also on 4
January as one of the Seventy Holy Apostles of Christ.
Eusebios, quoting from Hegesippos, wrote that St Jame was entitled th
Just by all those from the time of Christ to this present day, for there
were many who bore the name St James.
St James is also entitled Adelphos of Adelphotheos meaning the
Brother of our Lord because he Loved and served Christ from His
Birth, travelling to Egypt with his Father, Theotokos and Christ when
they went into exile.
St James was well known for his absolute devotion to God and some
gave him the knick-name camel-kneed because he spent so much
time on his knees in Prayer.
After the Apostles, James, the Brother of the Lord, surnamed the Just,
was made head of the Church at Jerusalem. Many indeed are
called Jemes. This one was Holy from his mothers womb. He
drank neither wine nor strong drink, ate no flesh, never shaved nor
anointed himself with ointment or bathed. He alone had the
Privilege of entering the Holy of Holies, since indeed he did not use
woolen vestments but linen, and went alone into the Temple and
prayed on behalf of all the people, insomuch that his knees were
reputed to have acquired the hardness of camels lknees.
St Paul described St James as being one of those to whom our
Resurrected Christ showed Himself. He later mentioned St James in

Thou were the Lords presumed

Righteous, His Disciple and Witness
of Mysteries of God; for together
with Him Thou fled to Egypt as

a way that suggests that St James had been married. (1 Corinthians
15:3-8 & 9:5)
In his Epistle to the Galatians, St Paul listed St James with Cephas St
Peter and St John as the three Pillars of the Church, who
ministered to the circumcised the Hebrews of Jerusalem, while St
Paul and his fellow Saints ministered to the Gentiles. (Galatians 2: 9 &
12)
St Lukes Book of the Acts of the Apostles provides clear evidence that St
James was an important member of the Christian Community of
Jerusalem and when St Peter had miraculously been set free from
prison by an Angel of God, and was forced to flee, he asked that St
James be informed.
When the Christians of Antioch were concerned over whether Gentile
Christians needed to be circumcised in order to be Saved, they sent
St Paul and St Barnabas to confer with the Church and St James
subsequently uttered the definitive judgement on the matter of Old
Covenant Circumcision.
Having raised funds for the impoverished, starving Community in
Jerusalem, St Paul went to St James, who insisted that St Paul ritually
Cleansed himself. (Acts 21:18)
The historian Josephos recorded the death of St James in Jerusalem as
being after the death of the Procurator, Porcios Festos yet before
Claudios Albinos took office, which has thus been dated to 62.
The High Priest Ananos took advantage of that lack of Imperial
oversight to assemble a Council of Judges who condemned St
James ... on the charge of breaking the Law... for which he was to
be stoned to death.
Ananos act was widely viewed as little more than judicial murder, and
offended a number of ... those who were considered the most fair-
minded people in the City, and strict in their observance of the
Law... who went as far as meeting Albinos as he entered the
Province to petition him about the matter. Their agitations led to
Ananos being desposed as the High Priest.
Eusebios, while quoting the account of Josephos, also recorded
otherwise lost passages from Hegesippos and St Clement of
Alexandria.
Hegesippos account varied from what Josephos reported.
The Pharisees being upset by St James the Justs Christian Teachings,
first forced him to the high roof top of the Temple in Jerusalem, and
when they were unable to make him denounce Christ and His
Teachings, they threw him from the summit onto the stone paving
below.
However, the aged Holy Apostle of Christ was still alive so they then
stoned him and finally smashed his skull with a fullers club.
The Protevangelion of James (Infancy Gospel of James) presents itself
as having been written by St James the Just Apostle of Christ our
Lord and Saviour.
May the memory of St Jame the Just Apostle of Christ be Eternal, and
may he ceaslessly intercede with our Beloved Lord for the sake of
our immortal soul.

At Thy Dormition, O Immaculate Virgin,
St James the Brother of our Lod was
also there, together with our Saviour
Christs other Holy Disciples, so that
he might see again Thy Pure Body,
the Source of Life, and might also
praise in song the Ineffable Mystery
of Thy Divine and Awe-inspiring
childbirth. As we honour it, we
pray Thou will Save us.

At that time, while Jesus was still
speaking to the people, behold: His
Mother and His Brothers stood
outside, asking to speak to Him.
Someone told Him: Thy Mother and
Thy Brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak to Thee.
And He replied to the one who had
spoken to Him: Who is My Mother,
and who are My Brothers?
And stretching out His Hand towards
His Disciples, He said: Behold My
Mother and My Brothers! For
whoever does the Will of My Father
in Heaven is My Brother, and My
Sister, and My Mother!
