Solving Multi-Step Equations

Lesson Objective

Reflection on Previous Lessons

By the end of the lesson, we will be able to ____________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________
(7.EE.4a) Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Solve
equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in
each approach.

Reflection
Take some time (thirty seconds) to think and write about what we learned in the previous
lessons on equations in the past week or two. What did we cover? What was perhaps
challenging about it?

Academic Discourse
When prompted, share what you wrote down with your horizontal partner. Whoever
has the longest hair will be Partner A. Use the dialogue starter to shape your discussion.

Partner A: Last week I learned about ___________

Partner B: You said that you learned about ___________

Essential Vocabulary

Vocabulary Applications
Part 1: Using Context Clues and Textual Evidence

Reread the examples for the word inverse. Based on your background knowledge and the
sentences, provide a definition of what you think the word means and why you think it.

I think inverse means______________, because in the text it says

Part 2: Comparing Vocabulary

Think about the words coefficient and constant. What is one similarity between them? What is
one difference?
Similarity Difference

Part 3: Recognizing Possible Misconceptions

Think of one of our essential vocabulary words. When we think about understanding their
meaning or use, how might those get confused? (Could they be confused with another word?
Could their meaning be close to something else?)

A math sentence that states two ______________

are _____________

A __________ value; a ______________

Addition and subtraction are an example of inverse
operations
When my teacher told me to stand up, I did the
inverse and sat down.

Solving Two-Step Equations

7x + 9 = 23

1. Add/subtract the constant

2. Rewrite the equation

3. Multiply/Divide the coefficient

4. Write the solution

Steps: Solving Two-Step Equations

1. Add/Subtract the constant from both sides of the equation

2. Rewrite the equation

3. Multiply/Divide the coefficient on both sides of the equation

4. Solve the equation; express as x = ___

Guided Practice
Use the exemplar and steps below to check your work on the two-step equation.

5x 4 = 21

1. Add/subtract the constant

2. Rewrite the equation

3. Multiply/divide the coefficient

4. Express the solution as x = ___
Possible Misconceptions
Think about solving two-step equations. Imagine you had to explain to an absent classmate
what a two-step equation was. When you explain, you want to make sure she doesnt make
any mistakes.
What do you think the most common place to make a mistake is?
How would you tell them not to make it?

Partner A: I think the easiest place to make a mistake is _____

Partner B: I agree/disagree with you. I said the easiest _____

White Board Procedures

Remember, when we use whiteboards, we only use them for practicing math. As
a reminder, our whiteboard procedure is to work on problems silently. Look at the
problem and hold up board when completed. Keep it in the air. Please do not
draw while waiting. You are not required but I challenge you to close your notes
for this! For today:

Define the vocabulary words as they are presented to you
Write and solve the two-step equation

Challenge Extension
Look at the problem below. Use what you know about different math skills we
have seen so far this year and try to solve each of the problems. Under the
problem, solve step by step (show your work!) On the right, write down your steps.
6(2x 5) = 30

Private/Partner Practice

Take a few seconds to think about how to solve the equations. Then, go ahead and
solve them. Be sure to include all of your steps you will share once you are done.

Solving Equations with Distribution
Apply the Distributive Property in order to set up a two-step equation. Perform the proper
inverse procedures and solve the equation. Circle or box your answer.
1. 5(8x 4) = 60 2. 3(5x + 7) = 36

Solving Equations by Combining Like Terms
Combine like terms in order to set up a two-step equation. Perform the proper inverse
procedures and solve the equation. Circle or box your answer.

3. 7w + 2 + 8 = 24 4. 3d 9d + 2 = 20

When prompted, discuss your answers with your horizontal partner. Partner A will
talk about how she solved the odd problems step by step. At the same time, Partner
B will check their work. When finished, Partner B will share how they solved the
even problems. Use our vocabulary!

First, I combined like terms in order to simplify the equation.
Next, I saw it was addition, so I did the inverse operation and subtracted.
I got rid of the coefficient by dividing three on both sides.
