Chemical Engineering
Title:
Chemical Reaction Engineering and
Thermodynamics
Weighting: 3 credits Coordinator:
Lecturer:
Jorge Ona-Ruales
Zhumabay Bakenov
Year of Study: 2
Pass mark: 40%
Aims: Provide fundamental knowledge of Chemical Reaction
Engineering so as to understand concepts like Mole
Balances, Rate Laws, Isothermal, and Non-Isothermal
reaction behaviour for the designing of Batch, CSTR, Plug-
Flow, and Packed-Bed Reactors.
Explain phase equilibria and chemical reaction equilibria.
The Thermodynamics of Chemical Reaction Equilibria for the
characterization of reactions using the equilibrium constants
and the concentrations of reacting species.
Learning
Outcomes:
The student is expected to:
Understand and utilize proficiently the kinetic rate laws for
sizing different types of reactors.
Formulate and apply algorithms to design isothermal
reactors for simple and multiple reactions.
Be able to develop skills in finding and analysing reaction
rate and thermochemical data for elucidating rate laws and
equilibrium constants.
Explain qualitatively and quantitatively the effects of heat
and catalysts in the designing of chemical reactors in
steady and unsteady state conditions.
Be able to determine the equilibrium constant and
composition for single phase and two phase reactions.
Discriminate judiciously between the role of kinetics and
thermodynamics in assessing chemical reactions.
