All Questions carry equal marks

1. Write notes on need for maintaining good voltage prole in power systems and need
to improve power factor? [16]
2. Explain the dierent control functions used for distribution automation. [16]
3. How do you analyse a substation service area with n primary feeders. [16]
4. (a) Distinguish between a feeder, distributor and service mains in a secondary
distribution scheme. [9]
(b) Show that with an increase in working voltage to n times, the cross section of
a feeder and a distributor would be reduced to 1/n and 1/n
2
of their respective
values. [7]
5. (a) Compare and explain the role of shunt and series capacitors in P.F. correction.
[10]
(b) A 400V, 50 cycles three phase line delivers 207KW at 0.8p.f. (lag). It is
desired to bring the line p.f. to unity by installing shunt capacitors. Calculate
the capacitance if they are
i. star connected [3]
ii. delta connected. [3]
6. Give the various loading and voltage level factors that inuence the design and
operation of primary feeders. [16]
7. (a) Explain the principle of operation of fuse.
(b) Explain the coordination procedure between Reclosure and fuse. [6+10]
8. Derive the voltage drop and power loss of non-three phase distribution systems and
compare to the 3-phase balanced systems. [16]
