Procedure
1 A sk students to w ork in pairs or sm all groups.
A sk students to talk about experiences they
have had giving and receiving presents, e.g. the
best and theworst presents they have
recei ved, embarrassi ng moments.
If necessary, refer them to unit 9, lesson 3 from
the Students Book: G ifts of love.
2 E licit brief feedback from the w hole class.
3 H and out one copy of the w orksheet to each
student. G o through each picture w ith the
w hole class, and brainstorm vocabulary and
phrases that could be used in each situation /
if they received those gifts.
4 A sk students to study the phrases at the
bottom of the w orksheet and place each phrase
in a category in the table provided. Students
can do this individually or in pairs. M onitor the
students, helping if necessary.
5 E licit feedback from the w hole class. Pay
particular attention to pronunciation. M odel
the phrases for the students, focussing on
intonation and sentence stress.
6 H ave students practice the phrases in pairs by
giving each other som e of the pictures as gifts.
Their partner should respond using an
appropriate phrase. M onitor the activity.
7 H ave students m ove openly around the class,
offering presents (the present cards) to other
students, w ho should respond appropriately.
Additional ideas
This activity could be extended to a full role play of
a dinner party. Students could be in groups of four,
one as a host and the others as guests arriving or
leaving, offering gifts and saying thank you.
