September 2014.

Dear Parents/Carers,
As you may be aware, all Local Authority Maintained schools in England are required to teach the new national
curriculum from this month onwards. This new curriculum is designed to be more challenging and promote higher
standards. As such, it has inevitably meant changes to the way we organise our curriculum and the way we will talk to
you about your childs progress.
Whilst the subject areas we are required to teach are broadly similar, some of the content is different and there is a
much sharper focus on some key skills in reading, writing and mathematics particularly grammar, spelling, In mental
maths children are expected to learn by heart addition and subtraction number facts by the age of 7 and multiplication
tables to 12x12 by the age of 9. There are also significant changes to age related expectations which reflect the higher
standards expected to be achieved by the end of Y6. This new curriculum brings the primary school curriculum into line
with changes to the Early Years curriculum which has been in place for the past two years.
The government has also taken the decision to remove the system of levels for describing childrens achievement in
their learning from this month onwards. In Years 2 and 6, levels will remain in place until the end of this academic year
but in Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 we are in the process of developing a system of assessing pupils progress and attainment in
comparison to the new expectations e.g whether a child is working towards (below), in line with, or above age related
expectations. National testing arrangement will change in 2016 and the assessments that children undertake in Years 2
and 6 are expected to be significantly more challenging: our curriculum is expected to reflect these challenges.
The new curriculum means that for the majority of children, there will be some gaps in their knowledge which will need
to be addressed if they are to meet the new, higher standards. We spent the last year designing and planning an
exciting, challenging curriculum to address this, aiming to ensure that our curriculum is right for our children in order
that they can succeed.
Team Newsletters should contain information about the work your child will be doing in class. Further information can
be found on our school website www.sbcschools.org.uk/inglebymill and in the 2014 school brochure.
We look forward to seeing you at Parent Consultation events in October. In the meantime, if you have any questions
about aspects of your childs learning, please do not hesitate to speak to your childs teacher.

Yours sincerely,

Lana Totty
Head Teacher
