Gather students together as a whole class with their workbooks.
Tell students to write in their books the four categories that have been
examined on each animal in their books (habitat, food, predator/ prey and
physical features).
Discuss as a whole class what the four categories are and notice if any
students are still unsure.
Tell students that they are going to be using these categories to look at seals
for this lesson.
Using the YouTube clip, allow students to write down information based on
leopard seals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a46Gnqic_Kg). Only pause
to allow students to write down information. Provide minimal information and
hints for the students.
Conduct a class discussion on what information students got and allow
students to add to their information.
Send students to their desks and discuss again what elements are in a factual
report (introduction, information, closing statement). Do not write these on the
board.
Tell students that they may put each element onto a separate line, however
they should not put titles, and eventually these will all be put together as a
paragraph.
Allow students time to finish their reports.
