Abrasivity Index is
based on friction angle
and confined strength
The friction angle
indicates inter-locking
grain structure
The more inter-locked
grain indicates higher
angularity
Higher angularity can
lead to higher abrasivity
and the stronger the
formation the tighter the
grains

Vibration Potential
Index is a potential
estimate of vibration
caused by formation
DOES NOT take into
account any aspect of
the bit design (just the
diameter)
DOES NOT take into
account the BHA or
drilling parameters

DSG is a qualitative
indicator of formation
drillability
Correlated to PDC cutter
size or description of roller
cone cutting elements
(teeth/inserts)
Based on CCS and
formation compressibility
WG is a qualitative
indicator of formation wear
potential
Correlated to PDC cutter
density or IADC Code for
roller cone bits
Based on Formation Indices
because cutting structure is
damaged by abrasion and
impact
