Sigiriya - Cobra Hooded Cave

Inscription: - Parumaka-Naguliya lene
The cave of Chief Naguli (Raksha maidens called Seetha Naguli, as she was born off the ploughshare).
There are many more inscriptions pertaining to Ramayana and Rawana but I revealed only some of them. Existence of rock inscriptions in Sri Lanka pertaining Seetha and
Rawana validates the specific historicity of Ramayana. The question arises how these Caves were donated to Maha Sangha when Rawana lived in a pre Buddhist - era.
During emperor Asoka's rule in India Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. The descendents of the owners of these caves who converted to Buddhism donated them to Maha
Sangha and inscribed the name of the Owner and the Donor.
LOVERS - ANURADHAPURA
Location: - within the sacred city of Anuradhapura

Inscription - 'Siddha mahayaha kuni - maha (la) ka Asala yaha (di) ni'
Translation - Princess Kuni is the wife of elder Asala - The above deciphering is of Ariyadasa Seneviratna - Author of Sri Lanka Rawana's
Kingdom. The above Brahmi inscription was inscribed at the original place where the Isurumuniya Lovers were sculptured. The letters in
this inscription is 3 inches x 4 inches in size. After donating Vessagiriya to Maha Sangha this sculpture was removed and placed at its
present place. The Lovers in the sculptured plaque are Sage Vishrawas and his Queen Kuni (Kaikashi). Ramayana states that Vaisrawana
who lived in Vessagiriya ruled Sri Lanka before Rawana. (Refer Sri Lanka Rawana Rajadhaniya - Ariyadasa Seneviratna Chap 9)

SAGE VISHRAWAS - ANURADHAPURA
Location: - within the sacred city of Anuradhapura

This stone monument placed at the celebrated Vessamuniya presently known as Isurumuniya Viharaya is of
a bare bodied personality in deep meditation and significant bearing. A head of a horse can be seen behind
the right shoulder. This sculpture has a head dressing and a "sacred thread" - a thread which is worn by
ancient monastic personnel. The histories of these monuments are not properly explored by the
archaeologists and they have named it as "Man and Horse". Taking the other monuments and the
inscriptions at Vessagiriya this celebrated sculpture can be scheduled as of Sage Vishrawas and his horse.

LANKAPURA / CHITRAKOOTA - (SIGIRIYA)

King Kasyapa constructed an open mouth lion's head and built a new entrance and renamed Chitrakoota Palace of
Lankapura as 'Sinhagiriya' / 'Sigiriya' and it is confirmed in our historical chronicle Mahawamsa. Had a lion's head
entrance existed before it would certainly appear in Ramayana, as Hanuman after his spying tour detailed the fortress?
Dr Mangala Illangasingha, Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology in University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka in an article to
Silumina weekend Sinhala newspaper on 1989 February 12th stated thus, 'that even if Kasyapa employed the whole
nation to build Sigiriya Fortress he would not have built this massive fortress in such a short period of time'.
"Rawana Katha" an ancient Ola book says that, after Rawana' s death Vibishana came to power and transferred the
royal palace - fortress and capital from hill country to Kelaniya. Chitrakoota, the palace of Rawana became the abode
of Yaksha noble called Chithraraja, a relative of Vibishana.
Chithraraja palace had been a Yaksha Temple and later King Dhatusena's son Kasyapa [459-447 AD] arranged a coup
d'tat against the father and chose Chitrakoota Temple for his palace fortress as he had a belief that his mother was
a descendent of Yaksha line. King Kasyapa is the only King who had renovated Chitrakoota [Sigiriya] and maintained it.
According to the Ramayana this giant fortress had been the Chitrakoota Palace of King Kuvera about 50 centuries ago.

PULASTHI STATUE - POLONNARUWA

In Polonnaruwa to the north of the Pothgul Vehera is a granite boulder, adorned with a large statue.
This is one of the finest statues in the Island and measures 11 feet 6 inches in height. The historians
and the archaeologists have not confirmed its identity to date. Some refer to it as the statue of King
Parakramabahu because its closeness to one of his major irrigation works; others refer to it as Rishi
Pulasthi's statue.
There are some mysterious reasons why the Department of Archaeology has still not declared that
this statue belong Rishi Pulasthi even after the name been inscribed on the statue.
Our Archaeological Approach
This statue of King Parakramabahu's is not adorned with his Regalia.
The presence of a sacred Brahminical thread from the left shoulder.
The Ola leaf book that he carries confirms that it is of Rishi Pulasthi.
The other is because Polonnaruwa was referred as Pulasthipura in primeval times.
The dress code is of a Rishi.
There is a worn out Rock Inscription which reads as 'PULA SA THA behind the head of the statue.
This ends the controversy of this statue and proves that this statue is of Rishi Pulasthi.

RHUMASSALA - UNAWATUNA

Rhumassala is a massive hill oddly out of place in the landscape just outside the Galle harbour. Legend details that during the Rama - Rawana war Rama's brother Lakshamana,
was injured and on the instruction of Vibishana, Hanuman was sent to Himalayas to fetch a particular medicinal herb. Hanuman forgot the name of the herb but he brought a
chunk of the peak containing many herbs.
However the mountain fragment slipped and broke into five pieces of which one fell to Rhumassala.

THE GREAT BASSES

According to Ramayana Sri Lanka was a huge continent. The early Indian astronomers established that the capital of Sri Lanka, as the equinoctial point in the universe.

Rawana-Kotte [the great and little basses] is located off the southeast coast.King Rawana had build fortresses at these locations which are submerged in the sea now. This area
is proclaimed as a security zone.

RAWANA CAVE - ELLA

RAWANA CARVING - ELLA

RAWANA FALLS - ELLA

Rawana Ella Cave is in the huge Ella Rock. In addition, Hanuman is said to have climbed up Ella Rock, in
order to find Seetha in the cave. Seetha lived in this cavern for some time. This is one of the locations
where Seetha was kept. The tunnel at the back of the cave leads to Rawana Eliya, between Hakgala and
Nuwara Eliya. Clearly, the former Emperor of Lanka knew the importance of exit strategy.

This carving is carved on a rock on the Ella - Wellawaya Road. It is visible from the main road if one
takes an interest in locating it. It's a recent discovery of mine. Getting closer is not safe as the
surroundings are full of wasps. This carving has lot of similarities to Rishi Pulasthi's statue. The head
dress and the moustache and the beard are similar to that of Rishi Pulasthi. As the cave Rawana hid
Seetha is very close to this carving there is a great possibility this carving to be of Rawana. This would
have been sculptured by a Sculptor in the later years. However, with the available evidence from the
villagers it can be called the only carving of Rawana available in Sri Lanka.

Rawana Falls is located on the Ella - Kithalella road below the famous Rawana cave where Seetha was
held in captivity. There are many legends linking Rawana, Seetha and the falls. It's been named after
Rawana, who is a principle character connected to the celebrated Indian poem, the Ramayana.
According to available evidence it is said that Emperor Rawana had kidnapped princess Seetha, and
had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Rawana Ella Cave.

STRIPURAKANDA - KIRIWANAGAMA

Rawana hid Seetha in Stripurakanda Caves at Kiriwanagama but changed her place of stay from time
to time. Stripurakanda Caves Kiriwanagama is the most wide and far-reaching cave in Sri Lanka. It is
spacious and possible to walk a considerable distance inside. A team of villagers who walked with me
inside this cave to a considerable distance had to stop due to earth slips and was able to see bats
beyond it. This confirms that this cave extends further.
MANAWELA FALLS - WELIMADA

Man made Wells and a Drip Ledged Room is located below the Manawela falls close to Stripurakanda.
It is linked to the Stripurakanda cave and Seetha walked through the cave for her daily bath. On the
rock of the falls is a man made drip ledged space similar to a room. It is said that this drip ledged
room was made for Seetha to change her clothes. Close to it lies number of man-made wells on the
rock from which she bathed.
LAKEGALA

Lakegala is a giant monolith-like projection at the eastern extremity of the Knuckles Mountain ranges
with an almost at a 90 degree angle. On the other side there is a sudden drop of over 900 meters.
Rawana had one of his abodes on it surrounded by his Lankapura kingdom. It was also used as a
device like a sundial to calculate time in his kingdom.
RITIGALA

Ritigala has 70 caves that have been used as dwellings by the earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka and
subsequently as monasteries. Ritigala which is located in Anuradhapura District is associated with
Ramayana epic. The mountain fragment slipped and fell while Hanuman was over Lanka on his way
back, and it broke into pieces. These landed in different locations, one of which was Ritigala. This
mountain of mystery is said to have most rare medicinal herbs and plants from Himalayas on its
summit.

RAWANA GUHAWA/GALGARU KANATTA

Rassandeniya (Rakshadeniya) and Wandurudeniya (Monkey area) stands on the
opposite sides of a hillock. On this hillock is a small man made granite den utilizing
polished granite slabs. People of the area call it "Rawana Guhawa". Department of
Archaeology which reconstructed the monument discovered that it had been re -
constructed many times after its original construction and is now an archaeological
preserve. According to the evidence gathered from the village the final war had
taken place here and Rama built this temple to wade off the Brahma Dhosham of
killing a Brahmin. It is said that Rawana was cremated in this zone. The Lingam
was not found as it had been reconstructed many times after its original
construction. Our view is that this was built by Rama to wade off his
sins.Venerable Devinuwara Siri Sunanda Nayaka Thera the chief incumbent of Raja
Maha Viharaya Devinuwara said that there is a carved pillar related to the story
lies in the higher platform of the temple. In this pillar there is a carving of King
Rawana fighting with bow and arrow seated on his elephant "Irawana". In this area there are many oral
evidences pertaining Rama Rawana war.
