LOOK BACK AT THE 2010 WORLD CUP

This article will take you all the way back to 2010. It will look at how different teams performed during this
competition and which referees got the more prestigious games in the later stages of the competition.
How did the teams do?
The group stages is always the stage where the most teams will leave the competition and here are the teams that left the
competition at the end of the group stages in 2010 and returned home

Group A
- South Africa
- France
Group B
- Greece
- Nigeria
Group C
- Slovenia
- Algeria

Group D
- Australia
- Serbia
Group E
- Denmark
- Cameroon
Group F
- New Zealand
- Italy

Group G
- Ivory Coast
- North Korea
Group H
- Switzerland
- Honduras

We then entered the knockout stages where we start to lose teams at every round, in the Round of 16 we lost 8 more teams
these were
- South Korea
- USA
- Slovakia
- Chile
- Mexico
- England
- Japan
- Spain
We then entered the quarter final stage where we lost another 4 teams. These teams were
- Ghana
- Brazil
- Argentina
- Paraguay

This therefore left 4 teams left which created the semi-finals. The two semi-finals were battled between Uruguay and
Netherlands and Germany took on Spain. Netherlands beat Uruguay 3-2 to make it through to the final and Spain beat
Germany 1-0 to complete their journey into the final.
Germany then played Uruguay in the third place final to see who came third in the competition and Germany beat Uruguay 3-
2 to be crowned 3
rd
of the World Cup 2010.
The final was a very tough and equal game between Spain and the Netherlands and was goalless by the end of the full 90
mins. The first and only goal was scored in extra time with only 4 minutes to go where Spains Inesta scored the winning goal
to crown them the winners of the 2010 World Cup.

Referees at the World Cup 2010
FIFA originally planned to send 30 trios of referees to officiate in the world cup 2010, however two set of these trios
were not taken due to their assistant referees no being able to pass the FIFA fitness test, this therefore meant that they
called one replacement trio which meant that in the end they decided to take 29 trios to south Africa to officiate in the
world cup. However there is only six referees from the 2010 world cup that will be returning for this year world cup. Here
is a list of all the referees that were sent to officiate in the world cup 2010 and will be returning for the 2014 world cup.

When the world cup reaches the quarter final stages of the competition, they send a big chunk of the referees home as
they will no longer require their service. This decision will be based on the teams that have got through to this stage of
the competition but it will also go on the match officials performance in the games that they have officiated in so far. In
the 2010 world cup, FIFA sent home 10 trios home, this included the Uruguayan set off officials that controversially
disallowed an England goal when shown in replays that the ball fully crossed the line. Another set of officials that also got
sent home were the Italian set of officials as they allowed a goal where goal scorer Carlos Tevez was shown to be in an
offside position on replays.
One of the main achievements for referees is to be able to officiate one of the biggest matches that happens in the world
cup, these matches include the final, third place final and the semi-final. See below to see which referees was awarded to
which big match-
World Cup Final Howard Webb (England)
Third Place Match - Benito Archundia (Mexico)
Semi Final 1 - Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan)
Semi Final 2 - Viktor Kassai (Hungary)
Howard Webb made history in this year to be the first official to referee both the world cup final and the champions
league final in the same year. He also broke a record by giving out the most Yellow Cards in a World Cup Final to date
where he gave out Fourteen Yellow cards throughout the match. A Red Card was also given to Netherlands player John
Heitinga for two bookable offences.
Yuichi Nishimura (Japan)
Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan)

James Anderson:
In the event of a mass confrontation I would ask both assistants to
enter the field of play and gain a credible position. I am not
necessarily fussed about whether we are in a triangle or not, so as
long as they have a good angle then that is good enough for me.
Also, I am not bothered about the benches, if they want to run on
then they can, one person is not going to stop a lot of people. Once
the situation has calmed down I would ask both assistants to come
in and we would talk. Its better I think if both assistants come in so
nobody can tell who has said what. I would ask both assistants what
they saw and what punishment they think I should hand out.
