specialists at school, researching and making traditional handicrafts from their own
countries.

Cyprus - The Fourth Mobility
From 5th to 10th June 2014, 20 teachers from 6 countries visited the 1st
Primary School Aradippou, Cyprus within the framework of Comenius pro-
ject The seven wonders of our region. During this time teachers from
Slovakia, Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey, Scotland and Poland took
part in the varied educational program.

Slovakia
Slovakia has discovered the 3rd wonder

Our 3rd wonder is a handicraft called Bobbin lace making. It was not an
easy process to discover it. Our pupils were looking for this wonder not
just in books, on the internet, but they also asked their grandparents to
help them find something in their attics or cellars. They were looking for
the pieces of information to create some educational posters which were
used to bring interesting knowledge to our whole school/ also to our
janitor/ and, as well, they were looking for the exhibits of the handicrafts to
be able to create the big presentation of handicrafts. Some craftmen
came to our school and so we announced The Day of Handicrafts. We
have discovered a lot of handicrafts and a plenty of crafts. Our pupils and
parents voted and our 3rd wonder is Bobbin lace making.

Do you want to learn bobbining?
You need to have a boobin roller, a lot
of pins with pinheads, bobbins, threads,
a lace prototype and a lot of patience.

THE THIRD WONDER IN SIVICE CZECH REPUBLIC THE
MOST INTERESTING TRADITIONAL CRAFT

Czech children of our project live in the country. We visited and met many
interesting crafts. Children are close to the older, traditional crafts, which
is in the village where they live. We also visited the international exhibition
of traditional handicrafts. We met farm animals, livestock farming,
agricultural machinery, we visited a beekeeper.

The winner was favorite craft - violin maker. We were visiting Mr. Petlach
in Sivice. He showed us how to make violins, violas and basses. We also
tried to work with the tools.

Greece
Most famous Greek crafts








Our pupils visited the Museum of Popular
Art, coloured traditional needle work de-
signs and also made their own ones. They
designed Ancient Greek pottery on paper,
decorated their Easter candles with clay
crafts and presented some of their moth-
ers and grandmothers embroiders.










They also wove a small carpet, knitted
the Comenius scarf, made sculptures and
visited a crafts workshop where they
painted a ceramic plate and wove on a tra-
ditional Greek loom. Finally, we have
started making an embroider of the
Comenius logo on camvas.

Some of the most famous Greek crafts dating
back even to Ancient Times are:

We are going on searching our wonders with the
participation of all students and teachers. For the third
wonder, we discussed a lot and couldnt decide on a
specific handicraft so easily. In the end, we, the teachers,
put forward the idea that we should carry out many
activities for a variety of our traditional handicrafts and
then decision process will be facilitated. This is the
traditional handicraft map of our country and we started
doll embroidery activity with the 7th graders with the
guidance of our Art Teacher. It is a traditional handicraft in
our region. The students brought some fabric, ropes,
needles, wool, cotton and each of them created their own
dolls. They wanted me to take them to our partners to give
as gifts in Cyprus. We hope you all liked them.

Then, the 7th graders focused on another handicraft
cage embrodiery. Our culture gives much importance
to birds and thus, bird owners would like to prepare
beautiful nests for their lovely birds. Some students got
carpenters to make wooden cages and they decorated
them on their own in Art lessons. Here are the results.












Ebru
What is next? We are really excited to present our
wonders to you. Another traditional art is ebru (Turkish
art of marbling). Ebru is the art of writing on water. I
know it sounds interesting but it is an art with the roots
dating back many centuries, Ottoman times. Special
equipment and an ebru specialist is needed to discover
ebru art. For this reason, we requested another school
management in the vicinity for their atelier, equipment and
experienced teacher. Five students and two teachers took
part in this discovery. Moreover, an ebru artist
accompanied our activity. All the students had much fun
and they also sent their first products to the partners.

Jewelry design
The last activity is jewelry design. The Comenius
Group prepared small gifts for the Cypriot students.



We would like to mention our traditional craft peculiar to
our own region as it is by the great Salt Lake. In winter,
craftsman put some shapes in some places of the
lake. In June or July when the salt level reaches a
specific amount, they can obtain some natural
shapes. Many tourists buy these shapes as



Unfortunately, we couldnt hold more acitivites for
our other traditional handicarfts in our region as
our school is not an appropriate place for some
handicrafts and we have limited time. However,
we will be very pleased to show our other
traditional handicrafts in March 2015.

Work on discovering the third wonder started during the Comenius
meeting in Brodnica in April.
The meeting was organized in such a way so that the participants
could learn about the traditional handicraft in our region. The group
was quite big, it consisted of 25 students.
Visiting the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum was the first element of the
meeting. Nicolaus Copernicus was an outstanding person of our re-
gion, he made a great discovery in astronomy. At the museum, you
could see the de-
vices he worked
with.

Next, we went to
the Gingerbread
Museum. We
found out how the
gingerbreads, fa-
mous all over the world, are pro-
duced. It is a kind of handicraft which
lasts even now. We are very glad that
the participants took part in the gin-
gerbread making activity and thanks
to this wonderful ginger cakes were
created.
Our students have a chance of learning about this carft and of
participation in such activites during their school trips organized
by many teachers.
The visit to the Foluszek settlement was the next step in familiar-
izing the participants with the traditional work. Our guests learnt
about the handicraft present in our region for centuries. At the
workshops, organized in a very interesting way, we turned into a
blacksmith, an archer, a knight, a baker or a farmer.
The students of grade four take part in such activities every year.
These activities give them a lot of knowledge about our tradi-
tional handicraft. Then, they discuss the topic in detail during
their History lessons. Whats more, this year our students made
posters about our traditional handicraft.








The students of the first grade took part in another multimedia
class prepared and conducted by Mrs Salej from our Town Li-
brary. The children found out about the origins and importance
of handicraft in every mans life. They got to know who an arti-
san is and what kinds of handicraft have lasted till now in our
region.
A wider knowledge of the subject will surely make the childen
respect all the craftsmen more.

Weaving
Primary 6 learned about the history of
weaving in Glasgow. Glasgow imported
cotton in the 18th century and many peo-
ple worked at home using hand looms.
P6 learned how to weave using hand
looms.

They learned how Glasgow weavers
worked in the famous Templeton's
building near our school, weaving car-
pets for around the world.

how to use hand looms and then tried
some paper weaving.

After invitation from school, Mr
Orthodox came to school and
showed to children how a pith-
kiavli is made. He did not come
alone as he brought some other
musicians who at the end played
traditional music. Students sang
and danced traditional dances
with the melody of violin and
pithkiavli.


Cyprus


Students of D'2 class with their teacher Christiana Rokopou made a re-
search for all traditional handicrafts and chose pithiavli, a small traditional
flute as the best handicraft. Then they asked all around to find persons
who make this kind of flutes and they were surprised to find out that a par-
ent of our school was having a hobby in creating traditional music instru-
ments. His name is Orthodox and he is actually a professional violin
player.

the Kykkos Monastery
and a winery in Koilani

Cyprus - The Fourth Mobility
Early in June this year a trip was made in the island of Cyprus for the 4th mobility.
The hosted school was 1
st
Primary school of Aradippou, a town in the southeast of
Cyprus. The meeting attended 18 teachers from all schools participating in our pro-
gram. The program of the whole visit was educational and full of surprises.

Day 1:Visit to school
A short welcome ceremony was prepared by the teachers and school with Cypriot
traditional songs and dances. Then teachers presented their countries in class ses-
sions. Grandparents participated in an hour festivity which was dedicated to tradition.
They played traditional music, danced and cooked traditional Cypriot food. At night a
grand ceremony was made in an open-air theatre where students presented a theat-
rical play to all the community.

Day 4: The Sun day
Actually was Monday when we drove to Pro-
taras beach and stayed all day long to the
beach, swimming and sunbathing. It was
hard for all to leave as the Mayor of Aradip-
pou was waiting for the farewell dinner at
night.
