SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE
Engineering geologist with over 30 years' experience in planning and executing geotechnical work
for a wide variety of heavy civil engineering, oil & gas and mining projects worldwide, on regional to
local scales, for consultants, contractors and owners.
Underground experience with both contractors and consultants in supervising excavation, support
installation, and surface/underground instrumentation installation and monitoring, geological
mapping, and managing specialist sub-contractors. Work experience includes soft ground NATM
tunnelling for a high speed railway, drill & blast tunnelling works, major hard-rock TBM-excavated
tunnels, earth pressure balance TBM tunnel in glacial sediments, and road header highway tunnels
in weathered metamorphic rock.
Particularly experienced in working in remote undeveloped locations with minimum outside support,
in training of local counterparts, and in supervision of project teams in harsh field conditions.
Familiar with the use of a wide range of geological, geophysical and geotechnical analytical
techniques. High level of computer literacy, with extensive experience in the use of analytical
software suites from Rocscience, Geo-Slope and other publishers.

Position: Principal Engineering Geologist

UNDERGROUND URBAN EXPRESSWAYS, AUSTRALIA
The A$4.8 billion Airport Link-Northern Busway-Airport Roundabout Upgrade project is being constructed to
significantly ease traffic congestion in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, and is currently Australias largest
infrastructure project. It includes extensive road header and earth pressure balance TBM tunnels of up to
23 m width, usually excavated under shallow cover. Parsons Brinckerhoff is in partnership with Arup to
provide all design and construction certification services to the client.
Currently working as Area Manager providing construction certification services for a major section of road
header expressway and busway tunnels. Responsible for ensuring Contractor conformance with design,
including jointly signing off with the Contractor on a daily basis for all tunnelling activity under the permit
to tunnel procedure being introduced in Australia to prevent incidents that have marred recent tunnelling
projects. Also responsible for selection of temporary support, as well as geological mapping that carried out

HIGH SPEED RAIL CONSTRUCTION, CHINA
The Zhengzhou - Xian Railway Passenger Dedicated Line (PDL) includes 459 km of electrified double track
railway, with a design speed of 350 km/ h. Lot 2 of this PDL has a length of 153 km and includes 38 km of
subgrade, 24 tunnels with 43 km total length, 58 bridges with 72 km total length.
Employed as Team Leader Subgrade and Geotechnics for the Supervision Consortium in Lot 2, responsible
for an independent review, as well as technology transfer to Chinese partners (from the Ministry of Railways
and Rail Design Institutes), of quality and safety aspects of High Speed Rail earthworks and soft ground
(loess) tunnel construction along the full 153 km of Lot 2.
The site supervision role also covered review of method statements produced by the Contractor for the
works, and issuance of quality notices and work suspension orders as necessary to ensure quality and safety

LIGHT RAIL CONSTRUCTION PROJECT, CANADA
Senior engineering geologist with EPC Contractor responsible for planning and executing design-stage site
investigations, preparation of specifications, and provision of geotechnical advice for bored (Earth Pressure
Balance TBM) and cut & cover tunnels prior to and during construction of a light rail rapid-transit project.
The design incorporated an elevated guideway in liquefiable deltaic sediments, and both cut and cover and

HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT, VIETNAM.
Member of a team conducting a detailed design review of a proposed 140 m high hydroelectric RCC dam
located in northwestern Vietnam. Reviewed and reanalyzed all geological/rock mechanics aspects of the
project, which is being designed by a Hanoi-based government bureau. Ban Chat Project, Lai Chau Province,

HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT, CANADA:
Major technical contributor to a claim over unexpected conditions encountered during construction of the
tailrace channel for this 120 MW expansion to an existing hydroelectric project. Brilliant Expansion Project, BC,

Provided specialist analytical services to some of the companys other hydroelectric projects currently under
construction in Canada (Ear Falls project, ON and Site C, BC), Indonesia (Karebbe Project,, Sulawesi) and

2000-2004: TAIWAN HIGH SPEED RAIL CORPORATION, JUNGLI, TAIWAN
Position: Senior Geotechnical Engineer

TUNNEL & VIADUCT CONSTRUCTION FOR HIGH SPEED RAIL PROJECT
Senior geotechnical engineer working for the client on design-and-build contract C215, which comprised civil
works for a 41 km section of the 345 km-long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project, at that time the world's largest
BOT scheme. Contract included the challenging 4.2 km-long Hukou Tunnel, driven through dense sands
and silts with up to 8 bar water pressures, as well as shorter tunnels. All tunnelling was done using NATM
techniques, with diverse auxiliary support measures such as jet grouting, pipe-roofing/AGF, minipiles and
grouting employing a wide variety of materials. Responsible for checking all geotechnical aspects of the
Contractors tunnel, foundation and cut slope designs. Also responsible for overseeing tunnelling and other
construction activities, installation of instrumentation, and daily analysis of tunnel monitoring data, a critical
aspect of NATM tunnelling.
1998-2000: GAMMON KVAERNER JV, HONG KONG
Position: Chief Geotechnical Engineer
TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION
Chief Geotechnical Engineer responsible for all geotechnical aspects of the construction of two hard rock
TBM tunnels for the Hong Kong Government's Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS, since renamed to HATS)
driven through variable, commonly water-bearing, rock conditions. Tunnels D and E are, respectively, 3.4 m
diameter, 3.5 km long and 4.3 m diameter, 5.5 km long. Supervised two geotechnical subordinates. Key
duties included identification of water-bearing faults by probing, and planning appropriate grouting strategies
when such features had been identified, supervising the subcontractor responsible for surface monitoring
(with potential settlement from dewatering under central Kowloon a critical issue, extensive and accurate
surface monitoring was a key part of this contract). Additional responsibilities included advising on support,
sidewall mapping and providing expert advice on claims.
1991-98: GOLDER ASSOCIATES LTD., VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA
Position: Senior Engineering Geologist
HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION
Rock Slope Design: Field director for a comprehensive site investigation for a critical highway rock cut.
The study employed up to 11 drilling rigs, and a wide range of down-hole investigative techniques
including impression packers, acoustic televiewer soundings, borehole closed-circuit TV and vibrating
wire piezometer installations. Developed a structural geological model on completion of the site

MINE AND MINE INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTIGATIONS/PIT SLOPE DESIGN
Mine Infrastructure Investigation: Field project manager responsible for all aspects of the
investigation of infrastructure facilities (port, mill site, dams, roads, waste dumps site etc.) for a proposed
major copper/gold mine. Responsibilities included design, execution, budget control and data
interpretation of numerous phases of site investigation over a period of several years. Batu Hijau Copper-
Gold Project, Sumbawa, Indonesia.
Construction Materials Investigation: Assessed and investigated construction materials resources
available at a remote proposed gold mine. Kubaka Project, Far East Russia, Russian Federation
Road Alignment selection: Responsible for route selection and investigation of a 40 km road to a
proposed gold mine in permafrost terrain. The study in particular addressed the availability of
construction material resources and avoidance of existing geological hazards. Kumtor Project, Kyrgyzstan,
CIS.
Open-pit Geotechnics: Performed on-site geotechnical design-stage assessment of a proposed gold
mine. Mesel Project, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
PIPELINES
Gas Pipeline - Directed a geotechnical investigation for a 31 km long 16-inch diameter pipeline in
varied terrain using drilling, GPR and seismic techniques (reflection and refraction), as well as geological
mapping. Investigated four potential directionally drilled crossings in both rock and unconsolidated
sediments, two of which were subsequently drilled successfully. BC Gas South Okanagan Natural Gas
(SONG) Project, Southern BC.
Gas Pipeline - Supervised a detailed design-stage investigation for a 23 km long, 42-inch diameter gas
pipeline. BC Gas Surrey-Langley Natural Gas Pipeline Southwest BC.
Oil Pipeline Hazard Assessment - Principal investigator for a detailed natural hazard assessment
(flooding, landslide and erosion risk) to the existing oil pipeline, which crosses very rugged mountain
terrain in the Coast Range of British Columbia. Each potential hazard was assessed and graded
according to risk. A database compatible with the owners system was set-up for ongoing monitoring of
the hazards. (Trans Mountain Pipeline, Coquihalla Valley, B.C.).
GEOLOGICAL/SEISMIC HAZARDS
Hazard Assessments: Principal investigator for a range of natural hazard assessment projects ranging
from pipelines to small hazard assessments for residential lot subdivisions.
Seismic Hazard Zoning: Member of team responsible for seismic hazard risk zoning of Nepal, for
input into the National Building Code for Nepal. Work carried out under the auspices of the United
Nations Development Program in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Landslide Investigation: Principal investigator for a major study of a large landslide posing a creek-
damming hazard to an international ski resort township. Fitzsimmons Creek Slide, Whistler, B.C.

UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION

Responsible for construction inspection, support design, and establishing all data collection procedures.
(Project was shelved on completion of the tunnel because of environmental concerns over the project.)

INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTIGATIONS
Mine Infrastructure Construction: Supervisor of geotechnical drilling operations for investigations
performed during the development of a major open-cut copper/gold mine (hydroelectric scheme,
tailings dam and ore processing facilities); also provided general advice on a wide range of geotechnical
issues. Ok Tedi Project, Papua New Guinea.
Satellite Repeater Network: Responsible for planning and execution of 95 site investigations for
aviation communications repeater sites located throughout Australia. Aircraft support enabled work to

MINE INVESTIGATIONS/PIT SLOPE DESIGN
Open-pit Lignite Mines: Member of Australian International Development Assistance Bureau team
providing input into geotechnical investigation and pit design for major (Mae Moh) and minor (Krabi)
mine expansions. Also involved in technology transfer and comprehensive training of Thai counterparts.

Open-pit gold mine: Field project manager involved in planning, supervision and reporting of a
comprehensive geotechnical and hydrogeological feasibility study for a proposed major gold mine in a
geothermally active epithermal deposit. Lihir Project, Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.
Open-pit Coal Mine: Performed field investigations and office-based slope design work for a proposed
open-pit coal mine. Himaliyan Deposit, Semirara Island, Philippines.
Open-pit Coal mine: Responsible for supervision of drilling and laboratory testing programs, data
processing and reporting of a geotechnical feasibility study for a proposed open-pit coal mine, with
particular emphasis on high wall stability. Oaklands Coal Development, N.S.W., Australia
PIPELINES
Oil Pipeline Routing Study: Project manager directing a geotechnical feasibility study for Chevron Oil
to select a route for a 200 km long oil pipeline from a highlands oilfield to a coastal delta, crossing
remote and rugged terrain, including varied karst features Route included a major directionally-drilled
river crossing. The survey commenced with extensive air-photo based terrain classification, followed by
intensive helicopter-supported fieldwork to shortlist 4 possible routes. Kutubu Project, Papua New Guinea.
Oil Pipeline Geotechnical Investigation: Follow-on from the above project. Carried out all aspects
of a detailed design-stage geotechnical investigation for the pipeline engineering firm performing design
studies for the above 200 km long pipeline, along a route selected by self. (Project was completed on
schedule and on budget 3 years later with no further geotechnical input.) Kutubu Project, Papua New
Guinea
HAZARDOUS WASTE INVESTIGATIONS
Groundwater Contamination: Worked as a member of a team performing drilling and monitoring well
installation to investigate a major spillage of contaminants at an electronics firm. Palo Alto, California,
USA.
Hazardous Waste Clean up: Worked as a member of a team directing a clean-up of a long-established,
badly contaminated petroleum storage depot in Sydney. Clean-up was performed to allow residential
development of the site. Pulpit Point Depot, Hunter's Hill, Sydney
Environmental Audit: Geotechnical specialist on a multi-disciplinary team conducting environmental
audits for electronic plants. Responsible for planning and supervision of monitoring well installation
program at Kulim, Malaysia.
