Research in Computing SWM53 Assignment 3 Wathsala Werapitiya

Literature Review Topic

Data Mining (DM): Real-world application of DM

Some comments about the topic

As you are probably aware, Data mining is a vast subject area. Therefore the
research material available is also quite varied (in terms of focus) and extensive.
I don’t think I’ll be able to achieve any much by writing a literature review on the
entire field of DM. Therefore I will be narrowing the subject area to a real-world
application of DM.

The paper looks at the challenging research issues in DM. It provides an

overview of some of the dissertation (Ph.D.) problems presented at an
ACM conference. This includes issues in areas such as text mining and
multilingual information analysis.

Warehouse Toolkit: With SQL Server 2005 and the Microsoft Business
Intelligence Toolset.

This is a tutorial-based book which covers the lifecycle of designing and

implementing a BI solution. I believe by following this tutorial I could gain
some practical knowledge on how a BI system is designed and
implemented.

• *** Berry, M., J., A., Linoff, S., G., (2004). Data Mining Techniques. 2nd
Edition.

This book covers the fundamentals of DM using the core techniques. It

also gives guidance in how to interpret various mined data. It also looks at
how DM can be used to solve common business problems.

for Business Intelligence Platforms, 1Q07. Available from: http://aviation-

This is a market research on Business Intelligence (BI) compiled by

Gartner. Although it is a couple of years old, it offers good insight into the
market trends in BI. It divides the BI market into four quadrants; leaders,
challengers, niche players and visionaries. I believe the work that the
visionaries are doing will help me in this research.
