The Voorhees Township Com-
mittee approved a motion at its
Sept. 8 meeting to make an appli-
cation for a $350,000 state grant to
fund phase one of turning the old
Buzby Landfill into the Voorhees
Environmental Park.
We have been working 10
years to turn the old landfill into
a park, Township Administrator
Larry Spellman said.
Voorhees has been working
with Rutgers
University students as well as
some Eastern High School stu-
dents to help make the Voorhees
Environmental Park a place peo-
ple would love to go and enjoy.
Earth Day has been held at the
Voorhees Environmental Park for
the past few years since Voorhees
acquired the land. The township
wants people to know it is there
and the land will hopefully be ap-
proved to make into a park.
The state will determine if the
application is complete and in
conformance with the scope and
intent of the Green Acres Pro-
gram. Then it will notify
Voorhees of the amount of the
funding award.
Voorhees has its matching
share of the project, if a
match is required, in the
amount of $325,000. In the
event the state's funds are
less than the $325,000, the
township has the balance
of funding necessary to
complete the project, offi-
cials said.
According to Spellman,
the hope is to get permits to
build on the land. Voorhees
wishes to construct a small park-
ing lot, and depending on how
much money is awarded, if any, it

The Camden County Library is
hosting a six-week workshop for
those suffering a chronic disease
or for their caregivers at its
Voorhees Branch starting Thurs-
day, Sept. 18 through Thursday,
Oct. 23.
Each two and a half hour work-
shop from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is
being presented by the Communi-
ty Planning and Advocacy Coun-
cil, Camden County Department
of Health and Human Services
and Camden County Senior
Corps.
Learn practical ways to deal
with pain and fatigue; discover
better nutrition and exercise
choices. Participants can under-
stand new treatments and learn
more effective ways to talk with
doctors and family members
about health concerns and issues.
We know that there are thou-
sands of families in Camden
County dealing with chronic dis-
ease or caring for a loved one for
an extended period of time,
Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez
said. This workshop will open
up new options and opportunities
for assistance and help with the
challenges. Our hope is to bring
facilitators together to make hard
choices easier and let residents
know that there are nonprofits
that can help.
A one-time registration is re-
quired and includes all six work-
shops in the series. Registration
is free. Call the Voorhees branch

SEPT. 1723, 2014 THE VOORHEES SUN 5
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The warm summer months are
starting to cool down. The leaves
are starting to change colors and
the sunny days are getting short-
er. That means that the fall is al-
most here.
For the fall, Voorhees has a few
different events to celebrate,
specifically, one of the most well-
known holidays of October, Hal-
loween.
Halloween can be known as a
time for mischief or for creepy
things to go bump in the night.
However, for Voorhees, it is all
about family and friendly fun.
Starting off the Halloween-
themed events is Thiller Night!
Held on Oct. 26 from 6:30 p.m. to
10:30 p.m. at the Special Events
Plaza, Boulevard, Macy's Court
and Boscov's Court, Thriller
Night promises to be a fun time.
Weve been doing it for the
past few years, said Lisa Milideo,
assistant marketing director of
the Voorhees Town Center.
The event starts with a Hal-
loween-themed movie on a 20-foot
outdoor movie screen. This years
movie will be The Nightmare
Before Christmas.
Its a good classic, Milideo
said.
There will also be Spirit
Hours at Iron Hill, Rodizio Grill
and Catelli. Visitors can enjoy
specials at the bars and might run
into a few festive characters.
We have a 12-foot skeleton,
seven-foot Frankenstein and a
magical witch who will come in
and out of the bars during Spirit

N
o one would ever accuse Gov.
Christie of being reserved, of
not speaking his mind, or of
not taking chances.
No one.
Last week, he solidified that once
again when he decided to lift New Jer-
seys ban on sports betting. His deci-
sion which came as a surprise to
many around the state and nation is
in direct opposition to what he said a
month ago when he told us all to forget
about sports gambling.
With the governors decision, and
directive to law enforcement, casinos
and horse race tracks can start offer-
ing bets on professional and collegiate
sports as soon as a judge affirms
that what Christie is doing is legal, or
at least isnt illegal.
A federal law prohibits sports bet-
ting in all but four states. When New
Jersey challenged that law, it went all
the way up the legal ladder, but the
Supreme Court decided not to hear the
case. So, alas, no overturn of the feder-
al law.
But a federal appeals court just
below the Supreme Court said nothing
was preventing New Jersey from re-
pealing its own ban and not regulating
the industry much like the states of
Washington and Colorado do with
marijuana.
So last week, thats what Christie
did. He repealed the state ban on
sports betting and said New Jersey
wont regulate, license or authorize
sports betting officially. Acting state
Attorney General John Hoffman said,
in fact, that the state will be telling
casinos and tracks that they wont be
held liable for sports wagering.
Its not the avenue that Christie, or
any one else at the state level, wanted
to take, but it seems as though its the
road they feel they were forced down
because they want sports wagering so
badly.
And can you blame them for this?
Three Atlantic City casinos shut down
in the last month, and one more, the
Trump Taj Mahal, just announced it
would be closing in November. Those
four closings will eventually result in
the loss of more than 10,000 jobs and
be a hit on a big tax money-maker for
the state.
Bets cant be placed yet a federal
court is expected to affirm Christies
position in a few weeks and when
they are, you wont be able to bet on
any professional sports event held in
New Jersey (no Jets, Giants or Devils
home games) or on any New Jersey
college team no matter where they
play (no Ray Rice alma mater). Every-
thing else, though, will be offered on
the big board.
While the NFL and other profession-
al sports leagues might fight this
move, its unlikely they will prevail
forever. Even NBA commissioner
Adam Silver said its inevitable and
that his league will ultimately partic-
ipate in that.
Will this be the shot in the arm New
Jerseys gambling landscape needs?
Can it finally, once and for all, turn
into Las Vegas East? Its hard to tell.
in our opinion
Its time to take the points

The Camden County Freehold-
er Boards Department of Public
Works is conducting emergency
road work in the southbound lane
of Haddonfield-Berlin Road,
Route 561, near Browning Lane in
Cherry Hill.
Camden County Public Works
crews are on the scene repairing
a section of concrete roadway
that has deteriorated, said Free-
holder Ian Leonard, liaison to the
Camden County Department of
Public Works. We anticipate
that the work will continue
through next week, so motorists
need to be aware of the lane re-
strictions that will be in place in
that area.
In light of the heavy traffic vol-
ume on the roadway during rush
hour motorists should consider
alternative routes or prepare for
delays.
Camden County is aggressive
about repairing all county main-
tained roadways. The Freeholder
Board has instituted a hotline res-
idents can use to report road haz-
ards they encounter. The Cam-
den County Public Works Hotline,
(856) 566-2980, is answered 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
I also invite residents to use
social media to contact the Free-

said. We need motorists to be-
come engaged in this effort to
make Camden County a better
place to live and drive throughout

Countywide flu shot program

kicks off on Oct. 1
The change of sea-
sons leaves many peo-
ple feeling under the
weather. But you can
avoid getting sick by
getting a flu shot. The
Camden County De-
partment of Health
and Human Services
recommends that
everyone get vaccinated this flu season,
especially children and seniors who
are most vulnerable.
The Freeholder Board has sched-
uled 18 site locations for the 2014 Sea-
sonal Influenza Immunization
Program. As is the tradition, the pro-
gram begins at the annual Senior
Health Fair, which this year takes place
on Oct. 1, in Cooper River Park at the
Jack Curtiss Stadium, starting at 10:00
a.m. and continuing through 2:00 p.m.
When you visit the 20th annual fair
for your flu shot, youll also find dozens
of health information tables, games,
prizes and lunch for all senior citizens.
The launch of the flu shot program is
coordinated with the fair because men
and women age 65 and older are among
the high priority groups for annual
shots. As always, we ask that seniors
receiving Medicare to bring their
Medicare ID cards with them.
The flu shots are provided for no-
out-of-pocket cost. Seniors that register
with the Camden County Division of
Senior and Disabled Services will
enjoy a complimentary lunch at the
fair. Call (856) 374-2782 or log on to
www.camdencounty.com to RSVP.
In order to keep your family healthy
this flu season, we want to make this
beneficial service easy to access. That
is why we host immunization sites at
convenient locations
across Camden County,
in addition to the an-
nual Senior Health
Fair.
The flu cannot only
create challenges at
home, but it can have a
negative effect on the
workplace crippling
businesses and suffocating production.
The flu can spread quickly through
any office and infect several employees
through the simple act of coughing. If
you are a business owner, you should
also encourage your employees to get
vaccinated. It literally pays to get a
flu shot.
Pregnant women and chronically ill
people are other high priority groups.
Flu shots are also recommended for
people with weakened immune or car-
diovascular systems, or with chronic
metabolic diseases, renal dysfunction
or blood disorders. Youngsters aged
nine and older must be accompanied
by an adult. Children under nine need
two shots, a month apart, and should
be seen by a pediatrician. For unin-
sured children, call CamCare at (856)
541-9811 or the Camden County Health
Center in Bellmawr at (856) 931-2700.
For a complete list of flu shot loca-
tions, visit www.camdencoutny.com.
For other information, contact the De-
partment of Health and Human Serv-
ices at (800) 999-9045.
If you have any other questions
about County services, please call me
at (856) 225-5575, or email me at car-
menr@camdencounty.com. Also, you

The Camden County Library
System has been selected as one
of six in the state to offer the Next
Chapter Book Club for adults and
teens with special needs.
Next Chapter Book Clubs allow
those with intellectual or develop-
ment disabilities the chance to be-
come members of a book club de-
signed to meet their needs, re-
gardless of reading ability. Each
club will offer up to eight individ-
uals the opportunity to gather
weekly to read and learn together
as they discuss books and make
friends in a relaxed, community
setting.
Based on its expertise of hav-
ing run two Next Chapter clubs
since 2008, Scotch Plains Public
Library sought funding from Li-
braryLinkNJ, the New Jersey Li-
brary Cooperative, to support
groups at other libraries and ex-
pand the concept to special-needs
populations across the state. Li-
braryLinkNJ accepted the pro-
posal and is funding six other
clubs, including ones at the
Voorhees branch library and the
Cherry Hill Public Library in
South Jersey.
The Next Chapter Book Club
will meet at the M. Allen Vogel-
son Regional Branch of the Cam-
den County Library System, lo-
cated at 203 Laurel Road in
Voorhees Township.

Hours, Milideo said.
After the movie, at around 8:30
p.m., a local dance group will
come out and re-enact Thriller
while the music video plays on
the 20-foot movie screen. Then,
the Thriller song will play a
second time where everyone is
asked to join in and dance along
with the dancers.
For more information on the
event go to the Voorhees Town
Center website at
www.voorheestowncenter.com.
The second Halloween-themed
event at Voorhees will be its 9th
annual Halloween in the Park
held at Connolly Park on Oct. 26.
It goes from 1 to 4 p.m., rain or
shine.
Held the Sunday before Hal-
loween, Halloween in the Park is
for everyone to come and enjoy.
Its a safe, fun place for kids to
come together and trick-or-treat,
who otherwise might not be able
to go out.
The kids can enjoy. We invite
parents, grandparents, signifi-
cant others to come out, get
dressed up and have fun, said
Michael Marchitto, director of
special events for Voorhees.
What we offer is something a lot
of towns dont offer.
Since this event was put togeth-
er, Marchitto said theyve had
pumpkin painting and decorat-
ing. A hayride is run through the
park where the hay wagons pull
the kids to an actual pumpkin-
picking patch. Sponsored by the
Voorhees Business Association,
the children get a free pumpkin,
and from there, they take a
hayride back to a decorating area
where they get to decorate their
pumpkins any way theyd like.
At the park, there will be bal-
loon artists, face painters and a
Halloween-themed magic show.
The police and fire departments
will also be doing safety demon-
strations and childrens IDs,
where parents can register their
child for an ID card.
There will also be a kids cos-
tume parade. While music is play-
ing, children will get the chance
to walk through the park and up
on stage where they can take pic-
tures with family and others.
The kids love being on stage.
It is the biggest hit along with the
pumpkins, Marchitto said.
Of course, what is Halloween
without the treats? At the event,
there will be specially marked
stations where children can trick-
or-treat and get special treats.
Others sometimes join to give the
kids free pretzels and other good-
ies.
As long as everyone has a good
time, that is what it is all about,
Marchitto said.
Admission is free and parking
is free for the Halloween in the
Park event. For more information
about the event call the hotline at
(856) 882-SHOW or visit
www.voorheesnj.com website.
