ABSTRACT

In the research paper entitled, Insecticidal Properties of Atis (Anona squamosa Linn.),
Pansit-pansitan (Peperomia pellucida Linn.) and Madre de cacao leaves (Gliricidia septum)
against Little Black Ants (Monomorium minimum) and Weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina),
the researchers main objectives were to determine the potency of madre de cacao, sugar apple
or atis and pansit-pansitan leaf extracts as ant killer and to determine the significant difference
in terms of mortality rate between the commercial ant killer and the product.
Four different treatments were applied to the two species of ants after the extraction
and preparation of the materials. The treatments were: Treatment A (control), Treatment B (60
mL herbal solution; 40 mL water), Treatment C (40 mL herbal solution; 40 mL water) and
Treatment D ( 20 mL herbal solution; 40 mL water). The four treatments were applied by
means of spraying at a distance of 6 inches or 0.1524 meters. For five minutes interval, the two
species of ants were observed. Results showed that Treatment A had the highest mortality rate.
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and T-test were used. These statistical tests were used
to determine if there was significant difference among the four treatments and which of these
treatments was most effective in killing the ants and to determine if there was a significant
difference between the most effective treatment and the commercial ant killer, respectively.
Using ANOVA, results showed that Treatment A is the most effective set-up for the two species
of ants. Using the T-test, results showed that that there was no significant difference between
the commercial ant killer and the Treatment A, which was considered the best solution, in terms
of the effectiveness in killing ants.
It is recommended for future study and experimentation that the ratio of the leaf
extracts be increased. Other species of ants or other insects and other plats which have
insecticidal properties could also be investigated.
