October 2014
Dear Members and Friends of the St. Peters
Family:

Dont you love October with its cooler days
and nights, the absence of humidity and the
autumn leaves? Were blessed here in
South Carolina to enjoy each of the four
seasons, unlike some parts of the country
where things stay the same almost year
round.

The changing of the seasons and the
passage of time should serve to remind us
that God is our Creator and Sustainer. In
the very first chapter of Genesis we read:
And God said, Let there be lights in the
firmament of the heavens to separate the
day from the night; and let them be for
signs and for days and years God gave us
the sun and the moon to mark the days and
seasons and years in our lives.

Each time the seasons change we are gently
reminded that we are not in charge. God is.
God created the world and set the stars and
the sun and the moon in motion. God
created the order of the universe, including
the changing of the seasons. God created us
to live in and enjoy the days and the
seasons of the year, the days and the
seasons of our lives.
As the days grow shorter and the nights
grow cooler this October As the leaves
change from green to those beautiful reds
and oranges and yellows of autumn let us
remember and give thanks to the One who
gives us the seasons, to the One who created
the Seasons, to the One who created and
sustains us through all the seasons of our
livesGod our Father.

In joyful partnership with you in Christs
service,

Pastor Leon A. Rawl

Proposed Const i t ut i onal

Church Council voted in favor of proposing
the following amendment to our
congregations constitution:
No non-ordained employee of St. Peters
Lutheran Church shall be a member of Church
Council, the Stewardship/Finance Committee,
or the Staff Support Committee, nor shall any
employees immediate family member be a
member of the Council, the Stewardship/
Finance Committee, or the Staff Support
Committee. Immediate family would include
spouses, parents, children, siblings, step-
parents, step-children, and step-siblings.
If approved, this will become Item Number
12.05 under the section on Church Council
and the present Item 12.05 will become 12.06
and all the other following items will be re-
numbered accordingly.
This wording was added to our previous
constitution in 2003 but was inadvertently
overlooked in writing our present
constitution.

new constitution at the November 9

vote on this amendment.

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS
Jenny Stone, Council Secretary

The Congregational Council met in the
office building conference room on
September 14, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. The
treasurers report and staff reports were
received and reviewed. Jerry Richey, Adam
Davis and Kristen Lunsford were absent.
Council received a letter from NALC
seminarian Dawn Rister, current active
member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church in
Chapin, SC asking for St. Peters to prayerfully
consider providing some financial support for
her education. She has finished her Lutheran
Studies at Gordon-Conwell and will be
transferring in the fall to complete her
Masters of Divinity at Hood Theological
Seminary in Salisbury, NC. Vicar Paulette
McHugh spoke to the council about her
support and asked if council could consider
changing one of the benevolence line items
listed in the budget. Currently we provide
$6,000 per year to the Student partnership
program at Gordon Conwell. Larry James
made a motion to rename that line item in the
2015 proposed budget to NALC Approved
Candidate Seminary Student Support and to
designate ($3,000) which is of the $6,000
to Dawn Rister for 2015 who is an approved
NALC candidate. Landis Sandel seconded the
motion and the vote to approve was
unanimous in favor. Stewardship/Finance
will make the necessary line item change to
show on the 2015 proposed budget.
Lutheran Men are sponsoring the
Newberry College Jazz Band annual
performance in the PLC on November 9
th
.
Council unanimously voted to continue the
gift support of $300 to the band.
Counci l recei ved a j oi nt
recommendation from the Staff Support and
Educational Ministry committees. The
recommendation was to consider calling a
part-time Associate Pastor with a focus on
discipleship and faith formation emphasis on
educational ministry and inventory of
spiritual gifts. After much discussion Karen
Price made a motion to recommend to the
congregation at the November annual
meeting to create the position of a part-time
Associate Pastor. Russell Rawl seconded the
motion and the vote to approve was
unanimous in favor. Stewardship/Finance
will include the additions to the 2015
proposed budget. Toby Porth then made a
recommendation that we call our very own
Vicar Paulette McHugh. Buck Vaughan
seconded the motion and the vote to approve
was unanimous in favor. These council
approved recommendations will now be
brought before the congregation on
November 9
th
at the Annual Congregational
Meeting for final approval.

Lutheran Men will meet on Monday,
October 6th at 7:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall.
Dinner will be provided, and Dr. Bill Long will
be presenting a program about the game of
baseball. All men invited to attend.

The Service Committee October
Project is to furnish coats and blankets to
LICS. Please put them in the black and green
buckets in the PLC or in the breezeway at the
church office. We will gladly accept any sizes,
gently used or new items. As always, we
thank you for your generous help with this
project.

The Service Committee will be
providing the Gifts of Love and
Thanksgiving program again this year. Many
have enjoyed donating to a charity in honor of
a loved one or friend. A committee member
will send a Christmas card telling the honoree
of the gift given in their name. We will begin
taking orders the first week of December and
go through Sunday, December 21. Look for
the list of charities in the December
Newsletter.

Mission Market Garage Sale It is
time to de-clutter and clean out those items
you to longer are using or dont have room for
in your house. You may bring items to the
church and put them in the room at the back
of the Old Fellowship Hall; or if you prefer,
you may bring them to the church on Friday,
November 14, after 5:00 PM. The Mission
Market is Saturday, November 15. Please
make sure clothing is clean and gently worn.

Dear Members of St. Peters
Congregation,
Once again you have helped the students of
Red bank Elementary begin another school
year with the supplies they need to complete
assignments. Students are so excited about
the beginning of school. When they dont
have the materials they need, the excitement
is tempered with anxiety and embarrassment.
Your generosity has helped many of our
children begin the year prepared to learn.

With deep appreciation,
Kimberly Kay
School Counselor

To St. Peters,
Thank you for your donation to the N.K.P.
Childrens Shelter. We are very thankful.

St. Peters Lutheran Church,
We want to thank YOU for being such a
faithful servant to LICS. Because of your
continuing support of our organization-
whether it be through food donations,
monetary gifts, Thrift Shop donations,
volunteer hours, or prayer- we are able to
continue to serve our Lexington neighbors in
need. Although the need is great, and
continues to grow, we want you to rest
assured knowing that we are continuing to
serve our clients daily, and are committed to
our mission statement of "Glorifying God by
serving our neighbors in crisis."
LICS served over 21,000 people in Lexington
County in 2013 with food, clothing, shelter,
and many other needs.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS

For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his
property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his
ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them,
and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he
who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his masters money.
Matthew 25:14-30 (ESV)

As I child, I remember thinking that my mom was the most talented person in the world. She could
do anything around the house. She could garden, cook, bake, can and freeze, sew, arrange flowers,
craft, butcher chickens, play the piano and organ, and she somehow always kept the house neat
and clean! It seemed like she was good at just about everything she did.

Maybe you are one of those people who have many talents. Perhaps you have just a few talents, or
maybe only one. We could ponder this disparity of talents among believers and wonder at Gods
wisdom in determining our abilities. We could question why our Master gives so much to some
and yet, so little to others; but at the end of the day, we would have no answers.

God gives as He sees fit. It is not for us to judge how and to whom God entrusts His gifts and
talents. The verses above from Matthews Gospel, tell us that it really doesnt matter how much or
to whom God gives, only that we use what we have for good. As it is written in the Gospel
according to Luke, Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from
him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more (12:48, ESV).

If God has entrusted you with talents (and indeed He has!), then why not invest those talents in
the church and her ministry to our community and beyond? Be bold enough to share the gifts that
God has given you be they few or many and see if God doesnt bring about an abundant return.

Written by Vicar Paulette McHugh
On behalf of the Stewardship & Finance Committee

WE NEED YOU!!
2014 Annual Missions Market
Saturday, November 15, 2014

If you have not already done so, please mark your calendars for Saturday, November 15,
from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is the date for our Annual Missions Market at St. Peters. We need
every member of the congregation to be a part of the market in some wayprovide items, donate
some of your time that day, or come and purchase things for yourself or others.
There will be a Country Caf from 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. with Richeys famous, freshly
made corndogs, hamburgers, and catfish stew. Plan to eat lunch with us that Saturday. The Coun-
try Store will have fresh, in-season vegetables, canned goods, cutlery, flavoring, and some other
special items. Our Craft Store will have all kinds of homemade items many members of our con-
gregation are providing which will be great gifts. Remember, we always have new things each
year. Fresh homemade cakes, pies, breads, cupcakes, and cinnamon rolls will be available in our
Bake Shop. Then there will be at least 20+ vendors who will have some great items you have been
wanting to purchase but unable to find; we have many new Vendors this year and you will not
want to miss them. We will also have the Cookie Bar filled with great homemade cookies. Dont
forget our frozen Casserolesmeat, breakfast, vegetable, soup, etc. Our Garage Sale starts at 8:00,
and who doesnt like a garage sale! If you have items around your house you are tired of, items
just gathering dust, or grandmas whatever that you have no use for, please consider donating it to
our garage sale. You may put items in the small room in the Old Fellowship Hall or you may bring
them to the church on November 14. Photography Studio will be the perfect gift for grandparents.
Look for times to sign up for those picture appointments.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 8:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Parish Life Center

We need your talentsIf you garden, please share vegetables or fruits; if you are a car-
penter, we would like to have some of your wooden items; if you are an artist, share some of your
artwork; if you are a baker, we would like some of your baked from scratched goods; if you sew,
share some of your beautifully hand-made items. Whatever your talent, we want You to be a part
of the Missions Market. We still need volunteers to help with the garage sale on November 15 and
set up on November 14. All proceeds go to outreach ministries Relay for Life, Snack Sack Minis-
tries, Samaritans Well and missionary support .

Again this year, the Lexington/Saluda Thrivent Chapter is providing us with supple-
mental funding. This funding really helps us reach our goal of $12,000.

For more information, see Sharon James, Darla Jennings, Karen Price, Susan Rawl, Clyde
Sanders or Kathy Schreiber.
