Ice Cream Social and Sing-A-Long, Church Council Meeting, and more!
Pastors Perspective: Over and over again, the apostle Paul expresses his thanks for his churches around Asia Minor and Greece, and especially for the co-workers in ministry whom he names. I want to name two co-workers here at Berkeley to whom we are saying Godspeed and farewell in August: our youth director, Devan Gartman, and our seminary intern, Mark Horner (see their columns on following pages). Since August 2013, Devan has served not only our youth but our entire church in building up the Christian faith of our 6 th to 12 th grade students, guiding them in their fellowship and service, and providing leadership by example. As you can see, life is changing for her: She and Blake Rodgers will be married in early August and she will continue her future graduate studies at UT Arlington. Please make a point to attend her farewell reception on Sunday, August 17 during coffee fellowship time on the patio (9:30-10:30 a.m.). Mark is the fourth intern from Austin Presbyterian Seminary whom Berkeley has been blessed to have through the Supervised Practice of Ministry program. His last Sunday will be August 24, when he will preach at both worship services. A reception for him will be held during coffee fellowship time on the patio. You are encouraged to send cards (and gifts, if you wish) directly to Devan or Mark (addresses available in the church office), or leave them in the office for them to pick up. God continues to raise up new generations of Christian leaders. I am thankful that Berkeley has received the ministry gifts of these two leaders, and I am thankful to have them as my co-workers. Please do take time to wish them farewell in August. Jeanne Devine BERKELEY STAFF

We hope you will make the trip out to see usits just a Sunday stroll. Ray & Roz Hodson Berkeley Buzz, August 2014, Page 3 Dear Church Family, I found this church at the bright age of 15, and couldnt stay away after my first visit. My church family has not only encouraged growth in my soul, but has always sup- ported my relationship with Christ. As soon as I got old enough, I went off to college in Hawaii, but you were still right here to welcome me when I came home. Thank you for giving me the most exciting privilege of getting to work with our youth here at Berkeley. I absolutely love and adore these children, and have felt blessed to be able to work with them. When I signed on as youth director at our church, I had NO idea what God had in store for my life. I had a dream and a sense of direction, but was clueless as to where I would be in five years, much less one year. In May, my boyfriend Blake Rodgers asked for my hand in marriage and there was no way I was going to turn him down! We have been separated by many states and a huge body of water for the past 3 years. We are getting married August 9, 2014. Blake cur- rently lives in Arlington while attending nursing school, and I will be moving to Arling- ton to live with him while attending University of Texas - Arlington and working at Covenant Kids. Thank you so very much for your love and support throughout my life. Even though I am leaving the position as youth director, I will still love your children very much and cant wait to watch them and support them as they grow. And even though I am leaving the church as a full time member, I will still joyfully visit as I come down to Austin so we can all catch up and continue to be a family. I love you all lots and lots! ~Devan Fay Gartman A Few Words From Our Intern Berkeley is a blessed place! I have been here six weeks now, and I am always impressed by how much you care about each other and your community. During my first few weeks here, I was blessed to join the youth group on their mission trip to San Antonio. If you weren't in worship a few weeks ago, I had a chance to brag on your youth during my sermon. They are indeed a wonderful group of stu- dents. Despite rain and scorching sun, Cameron and Julie Burns, Devan Gartman, Robbie Gaston, Emily and Kyle McClanahan, and Julia Wasson worked tirelessly to replace the roof on a San Antonio resident's house. They also packaged food at Children's Hunger Fund and provided lawn care and maintenance at Providence Place. I have also been blessed by the opportunity to get to know so many of you. I have deeply enjoyed visiting with Ed and Rita Littlefield in their home and visiting Mary Phillips as she recovers from knee surgery. And I had a blast at the Prime Timers dinner in early July! My kudos to Tim Wilson, Bill and Dorothy Rittenberrys' son-in-law, for the mighty fine Bluegrass music he and his band provided. Speaking of providing, your commitment to hosting St. Louise House each month is a huge blessing to that special commu- nity. I was honored to attend the St. Louise House dinner in July and learn more about the challenges and blessings of that critical ministry. Berkeley is also blessed by its amazing staff. Pastor Jeanne, Vikki Schwarz, Tyler Mabry, and Liz Smith spend countless hours making sure that the life and ministry of this church is vibrant. And each of you do amazing things to help make that happen! I have learned so, so much from listening to you and working with you. You are indeed a warm, welcoming, and loving congregation. It continues to be my blessing to minister with you. Grace and Peace, Mark Horner Pastoral Intern Berkeley Buzz, August 2014, Page 4 St. Louise House Summer Cookout A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the St. Louise House Summer Cookout on Thursday, July 10. Bridgette and John The World Berkeley Buzz, JAugust 2014, Page On May 17, 2014, BUMC hosted a church and neighborhood garage sale. Proceeds were donated to Meals on Wheels. What a great outcome! Below is their thank you letter to us: Dear Friends at Berkeley United Methodist Church, Each and every day, you make a difference in the lives of 4,000 homebound older adults or disabled individuals here in Cen- tral Texas. Thanks to your generous donation of $1,050.00 received on May 30, 2014, Meals on Wheels and More can con- tinue to feed those in need. Meals on Wheels and More pro- vides a full range of services that help keep some of our most vulnerable residents living independently at home. The clients and staff here at Meals on Wheels and More thank you for helping to ensure our growing senior population is not forgotten. To learn more about how your donations make a difference, watch for our newsletter in the mail, or check out our website for video, photos and stories at www.mealsonwheelsandmore.org. ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Composting at Berkeley Submitted by Susan Curtis Did you know that Berkeley has a compost bin? Its located at the back of the CLC building, near the kitchen door. We encourage folks who prepare and serve food in the CLC to contribute the food scraps to the compost when you clean up the kitchen. We accept all food waste except meats, cheeses and food with oily or buttery sauces, because these attract unwanted pests. We also encourage church members to bring this sort of compost from home to add to the bin. When you add garden waste or scraps of food to the compost, please use the garden fork inside the bin to stir things up a bit after you put your contribution in. Then be sure to close the lid so the compost stays in and the critters like cats and raccoons stay out!
