Catalog Data

ME 5623: Mechanism Design, Credits 3. To give introduction to basic mechanisms, the course will
emphasize on mathematical modeling of planar mechanisms. The conceptual modeling practice will
start from basic concepts and lead to build complete theoretical models of mechanisms.

Types of CAMS and follower motion
CAM functional considerations
CAM design and manufacturing considerations

9. Chapter 9 Gear Trains (4 Sessions)
Fundamentals of gearing
Simple and compound gear trains
Transmissions and Differentials

10. Part 2 - Dynamics (6 Sessions)
Dynamics fundamentals

Computer Usage
Students have to learn the Matlab based Sim-mechanics tool box which will help them in designing
and evaluation of mechanism functioning. Another software is available with the text book on which
the students can work on to solve the problems.

Projects /Design Activities
The course involves a project activity during which students have to design and synthesize a
mechanism of their own choice. This will enhance their knowledge and design skills.

Evaluation Methods
1. Assignments 5%
2. Project 15%
3. Quizzes 15%
4. Midterm Exam 20%
5. Final Exams 45%

Student Learning Outcome
Students will learn about the design and synthesis of mechanisms, and machines and the underlying
concepts of kinematics. They will learn about links, Joints, kinematics chains, Degrees of freedom of
planar mechanisms. Special emphasis is given to enhance the student capability in building analytical
models of mechanisms. This will enable students to characterize the mechanisms before making or
bringing the mechanisms into realization.
