Analysis of Engineering Services Exam 2014

The Engineering services Exam, one of the most reputed exams for Engineers of Civil, Mechanical,
Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering was held on the 20
th
(Friday) for the paper of
General Ability test (which includes General English and General studies).
The duration of exam is 120 minutes, with total 120 questions (60 from General English and General
Studies each). There is a negative marking @1/3
rd
of marks assigned to the question

Summary: The English grammar (sentence improvement and spotting errors) has
whooping 39 questions. The level of questions are easy to moderate. Students can
answer 60% of questions easily. Vocabulary section (synonyms and antonyms)
questions are average to high level, where students can answer 40-50% of
questions (out of 10). Reconstructing Passages section is relatively tough compared
to last year. The weightage for comprehension passage section has been reduced
from 10 questions to four questions.

Summary: The UPSC this time shifted its focus from S&T to Geography. The level
of questions in geography sections easy to moderate. Perhaps one question was
repeated (the rainiest place in India is located in). Some of the questions are
conceptual but many are fact based (such as strait connecting Bay of Bengal and
Arabian Sea). Level of polity section questions are moderate. History continues to be
received least attention with two questions (the question on 1935Act is debatable
between history and polity). Level of S&T section was moderate to high where
students need to apply the concepts.
