environmental monitoring are used for
a wide range of applications within the
following segments:
n Offshore Oil & Gas
n Renewables
n Ocean observatories , oceanographic,
metocean and research applications
n Arctic applications
n Deep Sea minerals exploration
Kongsberg Maritime operates in close
collaboration with customers to develop
instruments and solutions that support
challenging applications. With more oceans
monitoring happening now than ever
before, our solutions are vital to support
further understanding of the oceans and
marine life, and to help protect this delicate
environment.
The offshore Oil & Gas industry has a
duty of care in its treatment of the oceans
and is working hard to reduce negative
environmental impact. Our solutions are
designed to support the industry and are
built to operate during the whole life-cycle
of a feld:
n Pre-installation survey and baseline
studies before activities
n Construction and installation
n Drilling, production and daily operation
n Decommissioning and survey
Our monitoring solutions are a natural part
of mandatory impact assessment strategies
throughout the entire life-cycle of a feld.
Todays higher level of offshore activities
increases the need for fast, effcient and
accurate monitoring.
Our solutions provide
Real Time Monitoring,
so you always have
live data about your
operations in your
hands. Real Time Monitoring
is also an important tool
for making your
operations more
effective.
Environmental monitoring
Monitoring platforms
This platform uses our established and highly regarded
cNODE transponder technology. Kongsberg Maritime
transponders are well proven in challenging offshore
applications within Dynamic Positioning since the
80s, so are ideal for use in environmental monitoring
scenarios where the attributes of toughness, reliability
and functionality are vital.
The Stationary Sensor Network platform includes
specially developed Landers; complex sensor nodes
with a wide range of integrated sensors, including i.e.
cameras, echo sounders, hydrophones, sonars for subsea
gas leakage detection and oceanographic sensors.
KONGSBERG landers have a cable or batteries as an
option for communication and power.
The monitoring setup usually includes the simple
cNODE based sensor nodes.
The combination of Landers and cNODE based single
sensor nodes results in an advanced sensor network for
autonomous monitoring tailored for each application,
with critical features including:
n Subsea Logging of data
n On-demand uplink of selected data
n Wireless communication, battery powered
n Optional Wired communication and power
Single sensor nodes use sandbag deployment and acoustic
release; the result is easy deployment and recovery.
Retrieval of environmental data from the sensor
nodes can be done in various ways including real-time
acoustic (wireless) uplink to topside vessel via a dunking
transducer or Kongsberg HiPAP, or uplink to surface
buoy and relay by satellite or radio to shore or vessels.
Subsea data can be delivered as a direct view in topside
command units or in an OPC-UA server for interface to
various topside data handling systems.
By combining these main sensor platforms, stationary
tethered sensor nodes and AUVs as mobile sensor
carriers, the result is a powerful and flexible collaborative
sensor network that can meet almost any need for
subsea environmental monitoring at water depths down
to 4000 m.
Both platforms feature a scalable wireless sensor network were each
sensor node is capable of carrying various sensors for monitoring and
communication of sensor data.

Seaglider is an autonomous underwater
vehicle (AUV) developed for continuous,
long term measurement of oceanographic
parameters. Rather than an electrically
driven propeller, the vehicle uses small
changes in buoyancy and wings to achieve
forward motion. The systems pitch and roll
are controlled using adjustable ballast (the
vehicle battery). Seaglider can be equipped
with a wide range of sensors and is a suitable
tool for environmental monitoring.

Based upon our own industry leading hydroacoustic technology and sensor carriers,
we have two main platforms for subsea environmental monitoring: Stationary Sensor
Networks and AUVs. Both platforms feature a scalable wireless sensor network
where each sensor node is capable of carrying various sensors for monitoring and
communication of sensor data.
Stationary Sensor Network
Our fleet of AUVs ranges from the
lightweight REMUS 100 to our flagship
HUGIN, which is capable of performing
surveys to depths of 4000 m and operating
for up to 48 hours at a time.
AUVs operate without cable and can
manoeuvre according to a pre-programmed
mission plan for days, at depths of several
thousand meters without any external
reference or operator input. The AUV
can carry virtually any sensor relevant
for environmental monitoring. They are
silent cost-effective platforms with limited
disturbance to marine life and can cover
large areas and navigate with high precision.
An AUV can navigate with reference
to the surface or the bottom and can
get very close to targets of interest to
provide optimal high-resolution recording
conditions for sensors. Practically all existing
environmental sensors are already interfaced
and tested on Kongsberg Maritime AUVs,
which because of their use as survey
platforms, are field proven in all ocean
conditions, including ice covered areas.
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
Vessel Mounted instruments
Our monitoring instruments such as sonars and
echo sounders are widely used as vessel mounted
systems for environmental monitoring surveys
for applications such as Marine life, Subsea gas
leakage detection and Pre-installation.
Applications
Renewables
For the renewables sector including offshore
wind turbines, in addition to tidal and wave
power installations, we provide solutions for
the lifetime of a feld, which cover:
n Pre installation survey for feasibility
studies and planning
n Marine life impact during construction and
operation
l Background underwater noise
monitoring with hydrophone
instrumented sensor nodes
l Underwater noise monitoring during
offshore construction
l Monitoring of marine mammals, fsh
behaviour, and other marine life in areas
with renewables energy installations as
part of baseline studies and environ-
mental impact assessment
n Inspection with ROV instrumented with
Subsea Camera and Sonar
n Subsea inspection and long term scour
monitoring with Kongsberg Mesotech DAS
sonar to detect possible erosion around
installations
n Monitoring and inspection during de
commissioning with AUV/Seaglider or
ROV instrumented with camera sonars and
sensors
Oil & Gas
We provide monitoring solutions for the
whole lifetime of an oil feld. For the various
applications we have topside solutions for
data visualisation and data logging.
For Oil & Gas applications KONGSBERG is
developing a new integrated solution.
Pre installation survey/baseline studies
Our systems are used to support docu-
menting of marine life and natural oil and
gas leakage. These studies may also include
Kongsberg GeoAcoustics sub bottom pro-
flers for detection of gas pockets in sedi-
ments below seabed.
Construction & installation
In addition to construction and installation,
our solutions also support the seismic phase,
where we monitor certain parameters to
document levels of environmental impact.
Examples include construction noise
monitoring for assessment of impact on
marine mammals.
Drilling
For the drilling scenario we have solutions
including integrated landers and single sensor
nodes, with a wide range of sensors, for
monitoring of the impact of drill cuttings on
marine life such as corals, calcareous algaes,
in addition to other marine life.
Simrad echo sounders developed by
KONGSBERG are essential here.
Production
When the oil feld enters the production
phase, we provide solutions for monitoring a
wide range of parameters like subsea oil and
gas leakage detection, where KONGSBERG
developed echo sounders and sonars are
well suited for detecting subsea oil and gas
leakage.
This, in combination with KONGSBERG
solutions for monitoring of wellhead pressure
and temperature, enables our customers
to keep a real time view of any impact and
indicators of risk; key elements to maintain
safety and provide the basis for fast response
to any incident.
Decommissioning
For the decommissioning phase, we deliver
a wide range of instruments for monitoring
across the entire spectrum, including for
example, KONGSBERG subsea cameras for
inspection by AUV or ROV.
Oceanography & research
For oceanographic and ocean observato-
ries KONGSBERG uses special set-ups to
cover a variety of projects in the category
of research, metocean, marine life, fshery
research and aquaculture (sea farming).
Commonly used sensors are echo sounders,
sonars, hydrophones and oceanographic
sensors like Salinity, ADCP and CTD. In these
applications we use both wireless and cable
communications solutions.
Sensor carriers may be subsea sensor nodes,
surface vessels, AUVs or gliders depending
on the application.

Arctic operations
For Arctic applications that include off-
shore oil & gas operations including seismic
operations, we monitor for specifc Arctic
parameters, such as presence of ice and ice
thickness combined with sea current data
from ADCP. Our solutions provide data for
ice management support during marine op-
erations. Our sonars, mounted on vessels, are
also used for detection and categori sation of
icebergs.

Deep Sea Mineral
Exploration
The offshore activities within deep sea a
mineral exploration are increasing. For envi-
ronmental impact assessment of operations,
KONGSBERGs subsea solutions can be used
for baseline studies and monitoring during and
after operations. Of special importance here is
turbidity monitoring and current profling as
well as observe marine life. Subsea noise may
also be an important para meter to monitor. For
ROV mounting, KONGSBERGs subsea cameras
are widely used. In addition to environmental
assessment, the KONGSBERG subsea solution
is widely used for survey and mapping prior to
development.
Hydrophone applications

Noise level monitoring
Numerous offshore applications within
renewables or oil & gas are involved in the
production of man-made underwater noise.
Examples are construction noise from piling
during installation of wind farms or noise
from operation of airgun arrays during
seismic operations. Such operations can
generate noise levels that may have potential
to cause harm to fsh and marine mammals
like whales and seals.
KONGSBERG has developed hydrophone
solutions for monitoring of background noise
prior to development and noise level during
construction and operation.
Kongsberg Maritime provides instrumentation for ROVs
Underwater Sound detection/
monitoring.
Subsea gas leakage can be passively
detected by the use of hydrophone arrays
on the seabed.
Such leakages can be natural seepage of CO
2

or Methane from the seabed.
The hydrophones may also be used when
looking for leakage from subsea gas
reservoirs, production units and pipelines.
Marine mammals like whales can be detected
by hydrophones picking up the sound of
vocalization from mammals.
This is used both for marine science and also
useful as a tool for detection of mammals
prior to the start of an offshore application
such as Seismic or similar operations where
the operator must be able to identify that
mammals are not present within the specifc
area.
The KONGSBERG RUNES hydrophone
buoy is used in applications for noise level
monitoring in offshore renewable as well
as other underwater sound recordings.
KONGSBERG has a skilled team specialised
for under water sound and noise monitoring
that offers services related to the use of
hydrophone solutions.
KONGSBERGs technical experts select a
hydrophone with the right characteristics
for the specifc application. This would be
a KONGSBERG or third party hydrophone,
depending on the requirements.

Minutes of recordings from a Simrad scientific echo sounder; wave activity
can be seen on the surface, a school of fish has been swimming by, and
jellyfish can be seen swimming slowly through the acoustic beam
Marine mammals
Marine mammals differ from other ocean
biology as they feed in the deep oceans but
breathe air from the surface. Observing and
monitoring these animals can therefore be
challenging. In some situations operations
are being carried out where you want to be
assured that no mammals are present within
a certain area. For example, where there is
seismic shooting and piling. Passive acoustic
techniques use hydrophones to listen for
whales, but this technique is dependent on
the mammal actually vocalizing, which they
do not always do.
Omni directional sonars have proven to
be very effcient in order to establish if a
mammal is present or not. The Simrad omni
sonars transmit both 360 horizontally
and 180 vertically, enabling you to follow
the animal from the surface into the deep
ocean. In the surfacing part both bubbles
from the wake, the whale itself and also its
vocalization can be observed on the sonar
screen. All Kongsberg Maritime sonars and
echo sounders have the ability of a soft start
with reduced power in early transmission to
avoid transmission with mammals in the near
vicinity of the transducer.
Ecosystem monitoring
Revealing the secrets of the deep
Acoustic sensing enables non-invasive learning about the aquatic ecosystem.
Active acoustics have been used by academia and governmental institutions for
decades to quantify fsh stocks in order to manage the populations. Recently
the management focus has shifted from individual fsh stocks towards a more
holistic ecosystem approach, looking at the whole food web from small plankton
to large mammals.
Through the extensive range of Simrad scientifc echo sounders, multibeams
and sonars, Kongsberg Maritime is well positioned to give the users the very
best overview of what happens below the surface. From layers of zooplankton
drifting around the oceans, fsh feeding on the plankton and predator prey
interactions between fsh and mammal, acoustics will reveal it all without
disturbing the actual interactions. All systems are calibrated in order to output
absolute values of the biomass observed, and all data is stored in a well-
documented RAW data format that has been scrutinized by scientists worldwide.

whistles also appear on the screen.
