The Skills Show, part of Find a Future, is the nations
largest skills and careers event, providing young
people with opportunities to discover what they
are good at and what they enjoy, through
interactive activities and experiences which help
to shape their futures and transform their lives.
Taking place from 13 to 15 November 2014 at the
NEC Birmingham, The Skills Show provides hands-
on experiences that inspire young people to explore
further education, skills and Apprenticeships.
WHAT IS THE
SKILLS SHOW?
Visitors will be able to:
See over 65 WorldSkills UK Skills Competitions
from oristry to culinary arts
Have a Go at a wide variety of work-based
skills from web design to healthcare
Get impartial advice from careers professionals
Speak to a range of employers, colleges
and training providers
Hear inspirational talks across a range
of professions
Get an insiders view on different industries
And much more...

Volunteering has inspired me in my
work at college and beyond. It was really
great that my volunteer role related to
my carpentry and joinery college course.
All the training I received is relevant to
my course, as you have to consider the
same things in the workshop that you
do on the show oor. Im now really
sure that I want to do this type of work
for the rest of my life!

The 854 volunteers who took part in the 2013
event delivered over 20,000 hours of volunteering.
Their contribution in both time and energy ensured
the visitor experience was exceptional and without
them the show would not have been possible.
This year we are looking for 15 volunteer team
leaders and 850 show team volunteers to assist in
delivering The Skills Show to guarantee that we
produce the same exciting and successful event
as in 2013.
Why do we need team leaders?
Our volunteer team leaders will guide and lead
a group of show team volunteers. Volunteers
are present throughout every stage of the show;
from the build, main event and break down
phase. The team leaders are needed to play an
enthusiastic and senior position in helping us
deliver a smooth and positive experience for
both visitors and other volunteers.
WE NEED YOU!
Volunteers are crucial to The Skills Show
Event support working with our events
team in building and breaking down the event,
as well as overseeing the whole show and
helping all teams working at the venue
Event steward working with our operations
team, key contractors in security and customer
services and ensuring all visitors at the show
are looked after
Logistics and technical helping the logistics
and technical teams
Health and Safety working alongside the
event organisers and exhibitors

Gain substantial leadership and managerial
training and work experience to put on your CV
Meet hundreds of employers and discover career

Manage a group of volunteers
Develop new and build on existing skills

Be an ambassador for The Skills Show and wear
the branded volunteer team leader uniform
We aim to give all our volunteer leaders a valuable
and rewarding experience. To do this we will provide
the best possible training and support for your role,
and create opportunities for volunteers to meet
employers and learn about career opportunities.

Whats involved?
Responsibilities
As a volunteer team leader we will need
you to:
Attend a brieng and de-brieng session
with The Skills Show volunteer team each
morning and evening
Meet your show team volunteers upon
arrival and register and brief them
Delegate roles to show team volunteers
during their shift
Provide regular updates to The Skills Show
volunteer team via radio and agreed
communication channels
Support, mentor and motivate show team
volunteers in their role
Take photos and draft case studies of
volunteers to update The Skills Show
website
Set a good example to show team
volunteers by working with them
Be the link between oor managers, The
Skills Show volunteer team and volunteers
Evaluate your role and outcomes with
The Skills Show volunteer team at the
end of the event
Collect feedback and evaluation forms from
show team volunteers at the end of shifts
Help volunteers claim expenses and sign
out at the end of shifts
Have you got what it takes?
To take on a volunteer team leader role
you will need to:
Motivate your team to ensure they
complete tasks
Be a good communicator effective
team leaders are able to express their
thoughts and visions in a clear and
understandable manner
Remain calm when working under
pressure, especially when youre
working in a very busy environment
Multi-task be accommodating and
exible to sudden changes in your
environment and situation
Have condence when dealing with
the public
Have a can do attitude and inspire
others to be the same
Exercise decision-making skills
Be a team player but be able to work
independently with minimal supervision,
able to problem solve and prioritise tasks
Be trustworthy we want team leaders
who are dependable and responsible

WORKING
TOGETHER
What do we expect from you?
Training
Team leaders are required to attend a three day
training session at the NEC, Birmingham in the
week commencing 13 October 2014. These
sessions are mandatory so that you are fully
trained before arriving on site on 7 November 2014.
Note: Some team leader roles will require you to spend
some time with our delivery team before the event takes
place at the NEC. All your expenses for this additional
training will be covered by The Skills Show.
Dress code
You will be given a volunteer team leader uniform
by The Skills Show (e.g. t-shirts, hoodie, waterproof
jacket) and will be required to wear this at all times
whilst on-site. You will need to provide your own
dark trousers or skirt and comfortable footwear.
We need team leaders to be available from
Friday 7 November to Monday 17 November
2014 inclusive
On-site briengs take place every morning
at 7.30am during the 11 day period
Note: The shifts each volunteer team leader is
required to work will differ depending on which
department you are supporting.

Accredited qualications for the training
you complete
An unparalleled work experience at a major
industry event
Note: To keep travel costs down, travel should be booked
in advance and restricted to economy class. The Skills Show
will not cover additional costs such as room service in your
hotel, travel to and from the event site or any activities
when you are not on shift during The Skills Show.
Training and personal development:
Hotel accommodation and meals
A maximum of 50 will be provided for
travel to and from the training sessions

Experience Manager, by 5pm on Sunday
29 June 2014. Full details on how to submit
your application can be found on the
application form.
If you are shortlisted, well invite you to
attend a selection event on Wednesday
16 July 2014. It is essential that you attend
this in order to be considered for the role.
Those not shortlisted will be contacted via
email by Friday 4 July 2014.
