Production process
In city 42 productions of programs are handled by the producers. They dont hire the
directors. Assisting a director in the control room is typically a technical director who operates
the video switcher. The technical director, or td, is also responsible for coordinating the
technical aspects of the production.
One or more Production Associates may be hired to help the producer and director. Among
other things, they keep notes on ongoing production needs and changes.
The Lighting Director, designs the lighting plan, arranges for the lighting equipment, and sets up
and checks the lighting. As we'll see, lighting is a key element in the overall look of a production.
Some productions have a set designer who, along with the producer and director, designs the
set and supervises its construction, painting, and installation.
The makeup person, with the help of cosmetics, hair spray, etc., makes sure that the person
going on screen looks their best - or their worst, if that's what the script calls for.
MEDIA PRODUCTION SYSTEM
Three Production Processes
The production process is commonly broken down into preproduction, production, and
postproduction, which some people roughly characterize as "before, during, and after."
Pre-Production
Production
Post-Production

1. The Preproduction Phase
There is a saying in TV production

The importance of this is often more fully appreciated after things get pretty well messed up
during a production and the production people look back and wish they had adhered to this
axiom from the start. In preproduction the basic ideas and approaches of the production are
developed and set in motion. It is in this phase that the production can be set on a proper
course or messed up to such an extent that no amount of time, talent, or editing expertise can
save it.
Hit the target audience
In order for the program to be successful, you must keep in mind throughout each
production phase the needs, interests, and general background of the target audience (the
audience your production is designed to reach).
During preproduction, not only are key talent and production members selected, but all the
major elements are planned. Since things such as scenic design, lighting, and audio are
interrelated, they must be carefully coordinated in a series of production meetings. Once all the
basic elements are in place, rehearsals can start.
A simple on-location segment may involve only a quick check of talent positions so that camera
moves, audio, and lighting can be checked.
A complex dramatic production may require many days of rehearsals. These generally start with
a table reading or dry rehearsal where the talent along with key production personnel sit
around a table and read through the script. Often, script changes take place at this point.
Finally, there's a dress rehearsal. Here, the talent dresses in the appropriate wardrobe, and all
production elements are in place. This is the final opportunity for production personnel to solve
whatever production problems remain.
2. The Production Phase
The production phase is where everything comes together (we can hope) in a kind of
final performance. Productions can be broadcast either live or recorded. With the exception of
news shows, sports remotes, and some special-event broadcasts, productions are typically
recorded for later broadcast or distribution. Recording the show or program segment provides
the most important phase of production is preproduction

Internship Report at City42
21

By: Sarrat Gill

an opportunity to fix problems by either making changes during the editing phase or stopping
the recording and redoing a segment.
3. The Postproduction Phase
Tasks, such as striking (taking down) set, dismantling and packing equipment, handling
final financial obligations, and evaluating the effect of the program, are part of the
postproduction phase. Even though postproduction includes all of these after-the-production
jobs, most people associate postproduction with editing.
As computer-controlled editing techniques and postproduction visual effects (vfx) have
become more sophisticated, editing has gone far beyond the original concept of simply joining
segments in a desired order. Editing is now a major focus of production creativity.
Armed with the latest digital effects, the editing phase can add much in the way of razzmatazz
to a production. In fact, it's pretty easy to become enthrall ed with the special effect capabilities
of your equipment.

ACTIVITIES I HAD DURING MY INTERNSHIP IN THE PROGRAMMING DEPARTMENT AT CITY42
During my internship I performed many duties which added lot to my learning and
experience. All the tasks that I executed gave me a sense of responsibility. Sometimes there
was too much responsibility on me, there was excess of work and work load was divided by
assigning tasks to several people. I learned each and every task and made an active
participation in the organization. I have worked in the programming department.
As I joined the City News Network, right before the Holy Month of Ramazan started, I
was assigned the task of assisting Mr. Fahad Ajmal, the Producer who was made responsible for
conducting the Sehri Transmission, Noor-e-Sehar, for this Ramazan.
We had Mr. Tahir Raza Bukhari, Ex-Director General Aukaf, as our host for this program
and every day we used to invite two guests to be a part of our Live Sehri Transmission. One of
the guests used to be a Naat Khuwan and the second guest was usually a Religious Scholar.
The Producer for this particular program, Fahad Aj mal, used to discuss the Programs
topic for every episode with our programs host. And the Religious Scholar for that episode was
invited according to that Episodes particular topic so that the discussion is more informative
and is made more interesting with the Scholar related to that topic is invited on the show.
We used to go on-air starting from 02:10 AM every morning till 3:50 AM. In which we
used to take 4 general routine breaks for the ads to be played and a one Sehri Break in which
our Host, Guests and the crew for this program, Including the Producti on Team, Camera-man
Team, Make-up Artist and the Technical Staff were served with the Sehri.
My every day job was to get to the office around 10 PM so that I could make the
preparations for the next days Sehri Transmission. The tasks I was assigned included:
To call the Guests for our next days transmission to confirm their availability and
confirming if they would need the pick and drop service from the offices side.
To make sure that the car has been sent to pick the guest up from his address, if
the guest has asked for it.
To get the run down time from the MCR, Main Control Room.
To get the studio ready, at least 30 minutes before we are to go on-air.
To receive our daily guests upon their arrival and making sure that they are
ready, which included make up, and making them to sit on the allocated
reservations.
To prepare the Capturing Server System, and get the project ready on Final Cut-
Pro Software. The Capturing Server is used to record the Live Transmission on
the System.
To prepare the Cue Card, and hand it over to our Host for his ease, even though
an IFB was provided to him by the technical department.
Internship Report at City42
23

By: Sarrat Gill

To prepare the WASP System, and put in the entries for todays program.
To set the play out server ready, with the help of which we could play the title
and the break bumper every time we go to a break or coming back from a break.
We were using two PCR for our transmission, In one PCR we were managing the
audio level and as we were using a hybrid extension line for making the live
callers a part of transmission. They could call us and be the part of our show by
asking the Frequently Asked Questions and seek guidance from our invited
Religious Scholar. I used to sit in this PCR, and used to contact with the MCR and
my Producer every time we went for a break or we were coming back from it.
In the other PCR, which was connected to the studio, the Producer of the show
who was also serving as the Director, used to sit and co-ordinate with the
camera-men team, and the shows host of-course. And used to guide him
through the show, about when to take a link for a break, and when to welcome
the audience after we were back on air.

Apart from working in the Sehri Transmission for the whole month of Ramazan, I even
performed my duties for this years Eid Transmission as a Production Associate. It was a great
chance for me to work with the whole of the Production Department, for both indoor and
outdoor shoots. I learned a lot during my stay of 50 days at CITY42.

Critical analysis
The manager's job is viewed as coaching or guiding workers to choose the best paths for
reaching their goals. "Best" is judged by the accompanying achievement of organizational goals.
It is based on the precepts of goal setting theory and argues that leaders will have to engage in
different types of leadership behavior depending on the nature and demands of the particular
situation. It's the leader's job to assist followers in attaining goals and to provide direction and
support needed to ensure that their goals are compatible with the organizations.
A leader's behavior is acceptable to subordinates when viewed as a source of
satisfaction and motivational when need satisfaction is contingent on performance, and the
leader facilitates, coaches and rewards effective performance. Path goal theory identifies
achievement-oriented, directive, participative and supportive leadership styles. In
achievement-oriented leadership, the leader sets challenging goals for followers, expects them
to perform at their highest level, and shows confidence in their ability to meet this expectation.
This style is appropriate when the follower suffers from a lack of job challenge. In directive
leadership, the leader lets followers know what is expected of them and tells them how to
perform their tasks. This style is appropriate when the follower has an ambiguous job.
Participative leadership involves leaders consulting with followers and asking for their
suggestions before making a decision. This style is appropriate when the follower is using
improper procedures or is making poor decisions. In supportive leadership, the leader is
friendly and approachable. He or she shows concern for followers' psychological well being.
This style is appropriate when the followers lack confidence.
Path-goal theory assumes that leaders are flexible and that they can change their style,
as situations require. The theory proposes two contingency variables (environment and
follower characteristics) that moderate the leader behavior-outcome relationship. Environment
is outside the control of followers-task structure, authority system, and work group.
Environmental factors determine the type of leader behavior required if follower outcomes are
to be maximized. Follower characteristics are the locus of control , experience, and perceived
ability. Personal characteristics of subordinates determine how the environment and leader are
interpreted. Effective leaders clarify the path to help their followers achieve their goals and make
the journey easier by reducing roadblocks and pitfalls. Research demonstrates that employee
performance and satisfaction are positively influenced when the leader compensates for the
shortcomings in either the employee or the work setting.
Fair media doesn't means media being true only in critical manner but its responsibility
is to provide true but balance news. Media must not try to exaggerate the original news.
Free media, media should be free, freedom of speech are some of slogan that are often heard
from many media personalities at different times and many of them believe they have won
freedom after the fight with government for their rights and what i think is that it was only the
will of government who gave this freedom to them otherwise i think that was impossible one of
Internship Report at City42
25

By: Sarrat Gill

the step to make them free and prosper was when the government on January 16, 2001
approved the proposal to establish national institute of mass communication in Islamabad by
ministry of information to integrate the training establishments of the Pakistan television,
Pakistan broadcasting corporation and the information services. The official statement said it
would be a degree-awarding institute with state of art training facilities.

Strength:
Strong image
Biggest viewer ship
Advance technology
Unbiased, accurate and timely 24-hour news in `Urdu language'.
Most competitive work team.
Goodwill as the largest media group in the country.

Weakness:
It is a newly established company so it is still under the learning process.
Because Pakistan has no institute that provides formal education on this field they are
required to have all employees trained from foreign institutions.
Lack of innovation in the entertainment scene.

Opportunities:
Demand for quality entertainment
Opportunity for increasing customers
Growing awareness about city42 of the people. They are attracted towards
entertainment.
Increase in viewer-ship
It increases cultural activities.

Threats:
Fear of competition:
Especially in entertainment because of new channels.
Retention of employees
Unstable political situation

When looking at the matrix it is clear that an opportunity that gives a lot of highly positive
effects is that there is a lot of demand for quality entertainment. Also the fact that city42 offers
Internship Report at City42
26

By: Sarrat Gill

a huge range of entertainment, educate, infotainment and news products is a steady aspect in
giving the organization a likeliness to succeed.
The city42 claims to be socially responsible do not appear to compensate for the threats in
the market such as the intense competition and the fact that there are retention of employees.
However, because city42 TV is associated with the upper class, many of the threats that come
from the weak economy are relatively irrelevant since a weak economy mainly influences the
buying power of the lower class incomes. Unstable political situation is a threat that effect the
stability of organization is the list of top channels.
There should be certain limits for media that media should follow and provide news within
these limits if the news media stayed within these limits then it is expected that the license will
be issued to the new news channels in the new future.
Recently we have seemed that Pakistani news media has been portraying the negative aspects
of the government and neglecting the positive work of the government. In the future it should
cover both side of the picture.
In the future Pakistani news media should be fair enough to exploit the evils of the
society as well as to appreciate the goodness of society.

Observation
Working in city 42 channel is a great experience of my life the environment of city42
was very much sophisticated and encouraging, very corporative and supportive. Every one
helped me a lot in my assigned duties and work. I have observed the professional way of doing
work in a news channel. The way of making news is very much different from print medium.
During the working on my projects i have observed that the employees or reporters of an
electronic media should have good sense of news making and should always be ready in doing
the assigned work.
A producer should be active and if he or she is working in an Urdu news channel he or she
should know the Urdu typing. A producer should meet the deadlines provided by the seniors.
During production of a program it should be carefully observed that before the starting of the
program everything is perfect so that it is directly put live. From the content till the ending note
it should be noticed that there must be no chance of any mistake in a live show. All the
members working like a team, co-operative, friendly and always ready to help out others. I
really managed to learn many things in a very comfortable way indeed.
Recommendations
City42 is not much popular among the viewers. But city42 is following all the best tools
which are responsible for the popularity of a news channel. Here are some recommendations
which I think must be followed.
City42, Lahore bureau office needs to broadcast more programs from the platform of Lahore.
As there are only three programs being on aired from Lahore
In programming there are is no female producer. City42 needs to hire more female producers
for the coverage of female issues and other health issues.
Editing room of city42 needs improvement as it is not much big and is performing many tasks.
So I would recommend a room with more facilities and with space.
City42 is a channel that is in a process of progress I think they need some entertaining stuff for
much popularity among the audience and viewers.
