Bill Bates Scholarship Application Letter February 12, 2014

Dear members of the Scholarship Committee, Kawartha Male Chorus Music Director and Accompanist:
My name is Caleb Kim and I am applying for the Bill Bates Scholarship. I am very glad to have found this
scholarship offer, as I believe that not only will the scholarship itself benefit me, but the motivation that I
will gain to further pursue my musical education. I am currently living in Fenelon Falls, Ontario and am
living with my family, which includes my father, mother, and two brothers.
My interests and hobbies include playing sports, playing musical instruments, such as the alto saxophone
(currently studying and am taking weekly saxophone lessons), the ukulele, the drums, and the guitar,
experiencing new things, and recording YouTube videos of myself covering various genres of songs.
Concerning the acoustic guitar, I have learned this instrument by teaching myself through online videos and
other online resources. At first, it was a challenge to learn an instrument without the guidance of a music
teacher. However, since my father is the minister of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Fenelon Falls and
Knox Glenarm Presbyterian Church, I am therefore given many opportunities to perform and play the guitar.
These opportunities include playing at the churches that I attend, performing a number of times at various
community musical events, such as the Grannies for Grannies Annual Musicathon and the annual
Christmas carol sing. I also play the guitar in my churchs band called Holy Fire, which comprises of my
family and other members of my church. All of these experiences have helped me to improve my ability to
play the guitar, develop my performance skills, and to share my musical talent with the community of
Kawartha Lakes.
During my previous two years of high school (grade 9 and 10), I have participated and enrolled in several
musical activities. In grade 9, a couple of my friends and I performed in an annual school musical talent
show known as Antics at the Lindsay Academy Theatre. In grade 10, I enrolled in a guitar course to further
deepen my knowledge of music and to widen my perspective of the many genres of music. I am currently in
grade 11 of high school and am enrolled in an advanced education program known as the International
Baccalaureate Programme, which has aided me to develop skills that will lead to increased success at
university, promote a balanced lifestyle with extracurricular activities (I have joined my school soccer team
both in grade 9 and grade 11, and am currently playing school badminton), and to become a well-rounded
disciplined individual.
My goals for the future is to succeed in the IB Diploma Program, continue to improve my ability to play the
alto saxophone, and seek more opportunities to share my passion for music with others.
Once again, I believe that the purpose of my application for this scholarship is not only to receive the
scholarship itself, but to gain a sense of motivation and encouragement to continue pursuing music as a
greater passion.
Thank you for considering my application,
Sincerely,

Caleb Kim
