PYRITES, CALCINED (Calcined Pyrites)
DESCRIPTION
Dust to fines, Calcined Pyrites is the residual product from the chemical
industry where all types of metal sulphides are either used for the
production of sulphuric acid or are processed to recover the elemental
metals copper, lead, zinc, etc. The acidity of the residue can be
considerable, in particular, in the presence of water or moist air, where pH
values between 1.3 and 2.1 are frequently noted.

HAZARD
Highly corrosive to steel when wet. Inhalation of dust is irritating and
harmful. Cargo may liquefy. This cargo is non-combustible or has a low
fire-risk.
STOWAGE & SEGREGATION
Separated from foodstuffs.
HOLD CLEANLINESS
Due consideration shall be paid to cleaning and drying of the cargo spaces.
WEATHER PRECAUTIONS
This cargo shall be kept as dry as practicable before loading, during
loading and during voyage. This cargo shall not be loaded during
precipitation. During loading of this cargo all non-working hatches of the
cargo spaces to which this cargo are loaded or to be loaded shall be
closed.
LOADING
Trim in accordance with the relevant provisions required under sections 4
and 5 of the Code. As the density of the cargo is extremely high, the
tanktop may be overstressed unless the cargo is evenly spread across the
tanktop to equalize the weight distribution. Due consideration shall be paid
to ensure that tanktop is not overstressed during voyage and during loading
by a pile of the cargo.
PRECAUTIONS
Bilge wells shall be clean, dry and covered as appropriate, to prevent
ingress of the cargo. Ceiling boards shall be removed or sealed to prevent
penetration by this cargo. The tanktop on which this cargo is to be loaded
shall be covered with lime before loading. Appropriate precautions shall be
taken to protect machinery and accommodation spaces from the dust of the
cargo. Bilge wells of the cargo spaces shall be protected from ingress of
the cargo. Due consideration shall be paid to protect equipment from the
dust of the cargo. Persons, who may be exposed to the dust of the cargo,
shall wear goggles or other equivalent dust eye-protection and dust filter
masks. Those persons shall wear protective clothing, as necessary.
VENTILATION
No special requirements.
CARRIAGE
After the completion of loading of this cargo, the hatches of the cargo
spaces shall be sealed to prevent water ingress, as necessary.
DISCHARGE
No special requirements.
