Match Report;
Miners back from the dead to win in OT against Rams Homebush,NSW- The Wollongong Miners produced a 19-0 run to come back from a 23-7 deficit and defeat the Parramatta Rams in Coach Frank Currys last game before his retirement. Curry would not claim any credit for the win after the game saying I just told them to finish the year off like pros. I thought the first half they looked like they were already on holiday. I said true professionals work hard for every pay check and we had one half of football to earn our money.
The speech worked. Josh Boyce broke coverage to the corner and Richie Davis found him on his chest from 28 yards out. Then after forcing a punt a long 15 play drive set up kicker Stirling Williams from 41 yards out to reduce the margin to just 7. A successful onside kick just drove another nail in the coffin of Parramatta but luck also played a major part. Scrambling to his right Davis put the ball up high for his Tight End Gareth Lussick to grab in the corner. Lussick did not make a clean catch and the ball bobbled from his grip and hit the shoulder of Safety Lachlan Santo rebounding nicely into the back of the end zone where Boyce made the easy reception. Just like Coach drew it up. We practiced that all week. The hard part was getting the defender to volley the ball to Boycey said Davis.
Parramatta had produced their best football for three quarters but could not sustain the effort and that cost them. This sums up a difficult year for us. Especially disappointed for the fans said Trent Cannon after the game. The Rams raced out to a 14-0 lead thanks to hard running by Ryan Wesley whose play set up scores for himself and Tight End James Slaimankhel. Anthony Rogers replied for Wollongong and his touchdown was deserving as he finished the night with 9 receptions and 85 yards. Ethan Ritchie then kicked 3 field goals to set up the rams big lead.
In overtime the Miners won the toss and Boyce then produce the best return of the night, 561 yards which effectively ended the game right there. A couple of plays later and Williams kicked the winning field goal from 38 yards out.
