Mateos whimsical, brightly colored juguetes to life

Amy Cordova is an artist, author, educator, and award-

winning illustrator of childrens books, including Dream Carver.
In addition to being a celebrated artist, Cordova is also an
H[SHULHQFHGDUWVHGXFDWRUDQGKDVGHVLJQHGFXOWXUDOO\VSHFLF
curriculum related to pedagogy of place. She conducts hands-
on arts residencies and lectures throughout the U.S. leading
explorations into self that engage both children and adults.

John Bertles is a composer, instrument builder and educator. Most
recently his work has concentrated on building musical instruments
from recycled materials with his performing group Bash the Trash
Environmental Arts LLC. Founded in 1988, Bertles reaches over
50,000 students a year in performances and residencies across the
FRXQWU\$VDOHDGHULQWKHHPHUJLQJHOGRI(QYLURQPHQWDO$UWV
Education, Bertles has advocated for environmental sustainability
for over 20 years.

USING ARTS INTEGRATION TO ILLUMINATE

A University of Colorado Boulder faculty member, Tammy
Meneghini teaches courses in Acting, Movement and Voice.
She serves as Teaching Artist/Coach for the Lied Center where
she conducts theatre and movement residencies and teacher
workshops incorporating arts integration strategies. Meneghini
creates learning experiences that are easily integrated into
VFKRROFXUULFXOXPDQGWKDWDGGUHVVVLJQLFDQWKLVWRULFDO
literature or events such as the Renaissance, Greek Mythology,
Immigration, and Shakespeares complete body of work.

ARTS INTEGRATION, LITERACY & THE COMMON CORE

Deborah Brzoska is a nationally recognized leader in arts

education who has worked with schools and arts organizations
LQWHUQDWLRQDOO\DQGLQQHDUO\DOOIW\VWDWHV$VSHFLDOLVWLQFUHDWLYH
school reform, Brzoska has served as school designer for the
Small Schools Project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation. As a Kennedy Center teaching artist, she specializes
in arts integration, assessment and professional development for
teachers, school leaders and teaching artists.

The Lied Centers mission is to transform lives by

educating, inspiring and entertaining the people
of Nebraska through the performing arts.

THE KENNEDY CENTER PARTNERS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM

Since 2001, the Lied Center has collaborated with the Umonhon Nation
School (Macy), Nebraska and with the University of Nebraska-Lincolns
College of Education and Human Sciences (Lincoln) to develop
ongoing professional development for K12 teachers. A planning team
develops program objectives annually and meets quarterly to plan
activities, review goals, evaluate progress, and celebrate success.
Research results were recently featured in a national publication as
one of six success stories selected from more than 100 Kennedy Center
Partner in Education programs.
The Kennedy Center National Partnership Program assists arts
organizations throughout the nation in developing educational
partnership with their local school systems. The purpose is to establish or
expand professional development programs in the arts for all teachers.
The program is based on the belief that educating teachers is an essential
component of any effort designed to increase the artistic literacy of
young people.

K12 TEACHERS AND TEACHING ARTIST WORKSHOPS

The arts are effective tools for teaching core subjects such as math,
science and reading/language arts. Through this approach all teachers
learn how to engage students using arts integrated strategies, directly
DGGUHVVLQJVFKRRODQGVWXGHQWVQHHGVLQOLWHUDF\FRPSXWDWLRQXHQF\
as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills. Addressing K12
national and state education standards in the arts and core subjects is
an essential aspect of this approach.
