Raj Kapoor
Kapoor has been dubbed "a great showman," and a filmmaker in the purest Romantic tradition,
as he strove to entertain as well as address social themes close to his heart. Awaara dealt with the
question of what forms an individual's moral grounding, ("nurture or nature") while
incorporating comedy and stirring love scenes; in Shree 420 (1955) he addressed issues of
poverty, unemployment and national pride in the new Indian state at the same time maintaining
the audience's interest in the romantic plot. While never revolutionary in tone, many of his films
explore the ability of the individual to overcome economic and environmental injustice while
maintaining his/her innocence and integrity. He is quoted as believing that the individual's
struggles ultimately lead to the desire for love, to care and be cared for. The Government of
India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987
the highest award for cinematic excellence in India. In 2001, he was honoured with Best

Mira's movies are never short of creative excellence, be it be about strip-teasers in 'India
Cabaret', the eyebrow-raising tale of 'Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love', or her biographical foray on
the life of Amelia Earhart in the film 'Amelia'. Mira has never cowed from broaching into the
unfamiliar territory, a thing that has come to be the USP of her films today. A recipient of several

ART DIRECTORS:
Bansi Chandragupta
Bansi Chandragupta is the person who not just changed the very look of Bengali films but his
influence as the foremost Indian art director who championed the cause of authenticity in the
design aspects of a film extended far beyond Bengali cinema.
Bansi Chandragupta, who was of Kashmiri Pandit lineage, was born in 1924, in the town of
Sialkot, now in Pakistan. He studied in Srinagar and from an early age wanted to be a painter. In
1947, Bansi got his first taste of art direction in films when he joined Subho Tagore as an
assistant in the film Abhijatri directed by Hemen Gupta. Subho Tagore left mid-way due to
artistic differences with Gupta and the film's producer-scriptwriter Jyotirmoy Roy. When his
replacement fell ill after a few days, the green-horn Bansi became the art director by default and
he did a pretty competent job. Subsequently he worked in a few minor Bengali commercial films
but his big break came in 1950 when he got an opportunity to assist the famous production
designer Eugene Lourie who was working in Jean Renoir's The River - a film which was being
shot in locales in and around Kolkata Although Bansi's realistic set designs in the film Bhor
Hoye Elo (1953) by Satyen Basu got much acclaim from the professionals in the Bengali film
industry, it was with Pather Panchali that his work broke new grounds in terms of materials,
authenticity and the role of art direction within the overall context of a film. The sets were
constructed outdoors and for the first time all notions of artificiality were discarded in creating
filmic decor - the outdoor sets of village huts, the costumes, the everyday utensils, the furniture,
the pictures of gods and goddesses and other props looked extremely genuine and perfectly in
synch with the characters' milieu and habits and more importantly matched perfectly with the
ethos of lyrical realism inherent in Pather Panchali. Another pioneering facet of this classic film
was that perhaps for the first time in India that sets, costumes and props were designed keeping
in mind aspects of camera movement, choice of lenses and the tonal variations in terms of black
and white cinematography.
Bansi Chandragupta's contribution to production design in India is significant for the innovations
he brought about in using diverse materials for constructing realistic sets and locales. He was the
first person to employ plaster of Paris - he used the flexibility of wet plaster with great effect. He
also developed a special material by sticking together thick brown-paper and cotton sheets to
make walls of the interiors he built. But his greatest ability was to re-create the 'lived-in look' -
the sets and properties therein had the look of daily use and showed the mark of time.
Bansi Chandragupta's interest in cinema was not limited to production design - he had a thorough
knowledge about all the technical and aesthetic aspects of filmmaking. He directed 3
documentaries produced by the Department of Tourism, Government of West Bengal of
whichGlimpses of West Bengal (1967) won the National Award for the Best News and Current
Affairs Film. He had definite ambitions to make a film of his own and before his sudden demise
had almost completed the screenplay and the pre-production work for his maiden effort as a film
director.

Renu Saluja

Renu Saluja (5 July 195216 August 2000) was an Indian film editor. In the 1980s and 1990s,
she worked with both mainstream and art house Hindi cinema directors, including Govind
Nihalani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sudhir Mishra, Shekhar Kapoor, and Mahesh Bhatt, Vijay Singh.
Her work encompassed multiple feature films, documentaries, short films, and television series.

Renu was a four-time winner of National Film Award for Best Editing for Parinda (1989),
Dharavi (1991), Sardar (1993) and Godmother (1999) besides winning Filmfare Award for Best
Editing again for Parinda (1989) and 1942: A Love Story (1994).

Renu was born into a Punjabi family. Renu applied to direction program of the Film and
Television Institute of India Pune in 1974, but was not accepted into the program and ended up
in the editing program instead. She graduated in 1976 and entered the film editing arena in India,
which, at that time, was dominated by men.

She first edited, Vidhu Vinod Chopras diploma film, Murder at Monkey Hill (1976), which
went on to win the National Film Award for the Best Experimental Film in 1977-78. Once out of
the FTII, Renu made her debut, with batch mate Saeed Akhtar Mirza's Albert Pinto Ko Gussa
Kyon Ata Hai (1980), followed by with Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Sazaye Maut (1981), then another
batch-mate Kundan Shah's comedy classic, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), where her work received
its first real acclaim. Her early work was in parallel cinema with her FTII colleagues - Vidhu
Vinod Chopra, Saeed Mirza, Kundan Shah, and Ashok Ahuja.

The first offer that Renu got from outside the circle of 'FTII' filmmakers was Govind Nihalani's
Ardh Satya, filmed in 1983. After Ardh Satya, her career took off and she even did a stint with
Doordarshan.

Parinda made by Vidhu Vinod Chopra was perhaps the first mainstream film that Renu edited
and on which she also assisted. Unlike the smaller films which were made in one schedule,
where she would get the entire film in front of her before she commenced editing, Parinda was
shot over a period of three years as it depended on star dates, availability of locations, etc.

In the 1990s Renu was involved in both mainstream cinema and the new crop of 'different indie
films' that appeared following the success of Hyderabad Blues. Some of the well-known films
that Renu edited include Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983), Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993), Bandit
Queen (1995), Pardes (1997), Rockford (1999) and Hey Ram (2000), Nagesh Kukunoor's
Bollywood Calling and finally Calcutta Mail released in 2003 was her last edited film.

She died in Mumbai, on 16 August 2000, after ailing from stomach cancer for some time.
