Fall is here, which
means flu season is
fast approaching

Influenza (also called "the flu")
is a viral infection in the nose,
throat and lungs. About 10% to
20% of Americans get the flu
each year. The flu may cause
fever, cough, sore throat, a runny
or stuffy nose, headache, muscle
aches and tiredness. Most people
feel better after 1 or 2 weeks, but
for some people, the flu leads to
serious diseases, such as pneu-
monia.

The influenza vaccine can help
protect you from getting the flu.
The vaccines work by exposing
your immune system to the flu
virus. Your body will build up
antibodies to the virus to protect
you from getting the flu. The flu
shot contains dead viruses. The
nasal-spray vaccine contains live
but weakened viruses. You can-
not get the flu from the flu shot
or the nasal-spray vaccine.

Flu season runs from October to
May. It's best to get a flu shot as
early in the season as possible,
as it gives the body a chance to
build up immunity to (protection
from) the flu. But getting a shot
later in the season is still better
than not getting the vaccine at
all.

You can also reduce your risk of
catching the flu by washing your
hands frequently, which stops the
spread of germs. Eating healthy,
exercising and getting enough sleep
also play a part in preventing the flu
because they help boost your im-
mune system.

If you are sick, make sure that you
cover your mouth when you cough
and wash your hands often to pre-
vent giving the flu to others.

Please contact the Health Room at
476-4609 if you have any questions.

Your Check is Welcome. Your Check is Welcome. Your Check is Welcome. Your Check is Welcome.
The School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties recognizes that occasionally a parent may inadvertently overdraw a check-
ing account and a check may be returned by your bank. In order to recover these funds in a private and professional manner, the School
District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties has contracted with Nexcheck, LLC, for collection of returned checks.
Checks should be written on a commercially printed check with your name, address, and contact
telephone number. When a person writes a check to a school or the School District, he or she agrees that,
if the check is returned for any reason, it may be represented electronically on the same account, and that
the Service Fee for returned checks established by law may be debited from the same account.
If the check and fee are not collected electronically, Nexcheck will contact the check writer by mail and/or
by telephone to make payment arrangements. All payments need to be made directly to Nexcheck, P.O.
Box 19688, Birmingham, AL 35219. For a convenience fee, payments of both
check and fee may be made electronically at www.nexcheck.com or over the phone (800-639-2435) using
a credit card, debit card or electronic check.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
September 15 October 15th
The term Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any
race.
From September 15 October 15, the U.S. celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the contributions that Hispan-
ic Americans have made to American society and culture. This particular time frame was chosen to honor seven of our Latin American
neighbors who celebrate their independence: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on Sept. 15
th

Re Re Re Re- -- -Accreditation Survey: Accreditation Survey: Accreditation Survey: Accreditation Survey:

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s):

Families play an important role in the success of their children in school. We truly value your opinion and want to hear how we are do-
ing.

School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties is taking part in a re-accreditation process called AdvancED. The process as-
sesses the school districts current performance and plans for continued improvement.

An important part of this process involves an online survey that launches on September 25 and closes on October 10. Your completed
response to the survey gives valuable opinions and honest assessment of your childs school. Please know that your responses and com-
ments will be confidential. If you have children attending more than one District Five school, please complete a survey for each school.

You can access the survey by going to the link below:
http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/8270512

Your help in completing the survey will be invaluable as we continue the tradition of excellence within School District Five of Lexington
and Richland Counties.
