Introduction

Our Volume I fluid power school is our basic school on air and hydraulics and is
offered for those who are just learning about fluid power, what it is, how to use it,
and how to find problems with existing machines. The course will benefit all those
engaged in the design, servicing, or maintenance of hydraulic and air operated
machines. It will also benefit those who have worked with fluid power in the past and
who want to brush up.
Curriculum For Volume I Fluid Power School
The textbook used for this course will be Volume I of the omack textbook series,
Industrial !luid "ower. This book was especially prepared for the omack courses
and is also used in many vocational schools throughout the #.$.%. and &anada for a
course similar to the one we are presenting.
e will cover as much of the book as time permits. e expect to cover the following
material in each 'esson, but the curriculum may be slightly varied to suit individual
classes.
Chapter 1
(eneral basic material including common fluid power terms, laws, and facts) flow in
pipes) plumbing materials and si*es) pressure drops and power losses) vacuum
applications) hydraulic fluids) and other topics.
Chapter 2
%ir and hydraulic cylinders) how a cylinder is constructed and how it works) how to
select them for si*e) how to control their force and speed) seals for piston and rod)
mountings) cushions) cylinder testing and troubleshooting.
Chapter 3
The first of two lessons on air and hydraulic directional, pressure control, and speed
control valves) covers +,way and -,way valves) types of valves and methods of
actuation) typical applications for each type) some simple circuits for their use.
&onstruction of graphic symbols for +,way and -,way valves.
Chapter 4
&ontinuation of air and hydraulic valves covering .,way and /,way directional valves)
common types of center neutral valves) construction and use of graphic symbols for
diagrams) example circuits for both air and hydraulic valves) air saving with /,way
valves, etc.
Chapter 5
"umps. &onstruction and operation of gear, vane, and piston pumps) action of a
hydraulic pump) unloading of positive displacement pumps) horsepower to drive a
pump) coupling and alignment) pump suction design cavitation) priming)
supercharging, etc.

Chapter 6
Oil reservoirs) filtration for hydraulic systems) air trio assemblies 0filter,regulator,
lubricator units1) dryers for compressed air) pressure surges) hydraulic
accumulators) heat exchangers 0oil coolers1 both shell and tube and air cooled types
