ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader,
Australia Day Breakfast.
Five committee members recently met with members of council staff to
discuss this event.
We have the unique situation here where people head down to the beach
early on Australia Day to get a spot. For this reason ABRA decided in
2007 to finish the event at 10am instead of 11am, as is the case in other
areas where this event is held. This has continued until this year, when
council advertising indicated it would be 8am - 11am.
By 10am we have usually run out of hot food and very few people turn up
after that. On two occasions the breakfast has also coincided with the Tour
Down Under, resulting in people leaving early to get a good vantage point
at Snapper Point and along the Esplanade to watch that event.
Despite our explanation of these factors the council is inflexible in having
the event times standard across the city.
The committee has decided to try continuing the event until 11am next
January, provided we can cover the additional cost of hiring the
entertainment for an extra hour. We will review the situation after that to
see if we will continue hosting the event.
Hand held flags were not supplied last year because of the cost factor. It is
good to see that council will only buy Australian made flags. They are
dearer than imported units however.

Council Elections.
Wine Coast Ward has a record 13 nominations for this election.
Candidates are being given the opportunity to speak at our October general
meeting. So come along and see what they have to offer.

Infrastructure Developments.
Those who travel that way will see that work has commenced at Port
Willunga on the redesign to incorporate a paved, shared walking/bicycle
path along the cliff top to the Morgan Street ramp.
Due to the lack of space between the road and clifftop in places, this will
necessitate some narrowing or re-alignment of the roadway.
Quinliven Road too is scheduled to have the western end redeveloped to
match the rest of the work done on that road. The area outside the Aldinga
Beach R-7 School is scheduled to be done mainly during the holiday
period.
I note in the councils planning that the Snapper Point toilet is scheduled
for construction this coming year. Like the rest of you I wont hold my
breath! - Weve hard that before.

It was sad to hear of the passing of Desi Moore
recently.
Desi was active in the Friends of Aldinga Scrub group
and also a supporter of the local arts community.
Our thoughts go out to Bob and their family and friends.
Remember we dont have reporters so we rely mainly on contributions

The Sound of Music Returns

Dust off your nun's habit and warm up the vocal
chords the Von Trapps are back! After a sellout
showing last year Cinemallunga is pleased to an-
nounce the return of The Sound of Music, showing
on Saturday October 18th in the Willunga Show
Hall. Singing along, dressing up, a little yodelling
and joining in will be the flavour of the day as audi-
ences journey back to Austria and the story of the
famous singing nun. Warm-up performances from
community choirs will help everyone get into the
spirit. As part of the Every Generation Festival, this
event is highly suitable for all ages and with two
showings 1pm and 6:30pm, there should be a time
to suit.

Seeking New Members
for the 2014/15 Surf Life Saving
Season.

The Aldinga Bay Surf Life Saving Club is
holding a Registration Day on Saturday, 11th October
from 11am to 2pm at the club house, Norman Rd, Silver
Sands.
Children aged 5 to 7 can be involved in our "Tiny Tot"
groups while the "Nippers" program teaches beach, water
and surf education for children aged 7 to 13.
Training is held from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday afternoons,
commencing 18th October 2014 through till March 2015.
"Surf Rescue Certificate" and "Bronze Medallion"
training is available for teenagers and adults, offering
training in beach and surf safety, physical fitness, first aid,
resuscitation, surf life saving and life skills.
Club members enjoy access to club bar facilities, showers,
car park and a range of surf craft as well as the
opportunity to make new friends and service the
community.
At Aldinga Bay Surf Club your whole family can be in-
volved in fun, healthy activities and learn the skills to stay
safe and help others on the beach.

12 Rules For Life
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE
you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone
until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they
called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills,
cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain

abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't
bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping
you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
Rule No. 12: Smoking does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you're out cruising, watch
an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That's what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for "expressing
yourself" with purple hair and/or pierced body parts.
Rule No. 13: You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying
young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven't seen one of your peers at room tempera
ture lately.
Rule No. 14: Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school's a bother, and life is depressing. But some day
you'll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You're welcome.

CANCER COUNCIL SAS
RELAY FOR LIFEMcLAREN VALE

OCTOBER 11 AND 12

Go Kan Ryu Karate Do (GKR) have been so inspired by
the cause and the idea of this event that they have decided
to enter a team in the inaugural McLaren Vale Relay For
Life this October 11 and 12. As word spread within the
worldwide Karate club so did the passion. The club has
now had so many of its members become involved it has
had to start its 3rd team of up to 15 to cater for everyone.

The event itself is to be held at the McLaren Vale Sport-
ing Complex starting at 2pm on October 11. The partici-
pants will walk or run around the oval for 19 hours
straight
overnight in a relay format passing the baton between the
team members. This is to signify that Cancer does not
sleep.

There will be live music, local trader stalls, kids activi-
ties, Martial Arts Demos and plenty of entertainment for
everyone on the day. Part of the event will be a moving
memorial ceremony and a celebration for Survivors and
carers. It is going to be a most fulfilling experience and it
is highly recommended to get on down and be a part of it.

would like to be a part of this event please head to

If you would like to be a part of this fantastic event but

After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a
"gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with
the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; docu-
ment their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the
gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that
ground crews lack a sense of humour. Here are some

We really need more volunteers to meet and greet our
visitors and make sure that they enjoy their visit to the
Museums.
An orientation and training will be provided for new
volunteers. As little as three hours each month would make

NEW SLATE ROOF on WILLUNGA SHOW HALL

The new slate roof on the Show Hall was, despite the
inclement weather, completed in time for the recent
Almond Blossom Festival in July.
The Recreational Park Committee was the driving force
for this project with financial support from the City of
Onkaparinga.
The original Willunga Slate roof had lasted 124 years.
The new slate is from the "Bangor" region of Wales.
A Brief History of the Hall
The Hall is described as an imposing structure built of
stone with brick facings and having a fine slate roof.
Much of the material had been donated stone by
Capt.T.Atkinson, slate by Mr T Martin and much volun-
tary labour. The contractor was able to execute the work
for a very low price(360 pounds).
With the opening of the then Agricultural Hall in 1890
The Willunga Show gained a permanent home (the Agri-
cultural & Horticultural Society had held Shows from as
early as 1856 at various venues).
The Hall(now called the Show Hall) was used for Shows,
dances, picture shows, concerts and meetings. An Insti-
tute Library was conducted in the back room from 1922.
The front section was added in the early 1900's and the
Sports and Social Club was added to the back in 1982.
At the rear of the Hall is the Recreation Park,the land for
which was purchased in 1885 from Mrs Pethick.
Some of the old materials from the roof, very brittle old
tiles (only 20 survived the lift off process), original hand
made nails and Oregon batons along with photographs of
the new technical process used in the re-roofing will be
put together in an interpretive display at the SLATE
MUSEUM at the Old Courthouse Museum.

Butterworth Mill was situated on the old Aldinga Road
from Willunga (Now called Flour Mill Road).
Its remains can still be seen there with the original
Butterworths cottage on the other side of the road.
Here is a fact about the 1500's.
Most people got married in June because they took their
yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by
June. However, since they were starting to smell, brides
carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour.
Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when get-
ting married.

Learn how to protect
your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring
more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and
460 bird species.
Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per
cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas and
with it, many plant, animal and bird species.
Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all
walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we
have left by learning how to restore and protect our States
native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.
At the workshop, participants will learn:
why the bush needs your help;
the best strategies for restoring ecological processes;
minimal disturbance techniques;
how to work safely in the bush;
how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer
Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through
the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques
to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive
weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which
cover topics such as native plant and grass identification,
advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and
more.
Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the
longer term. They can participate in small group activities
every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join
our Bush Action Team.

Eleven call outs were received in all during August.

The friendship of some people is like a shadow,
Keeping close to us while we walk in the sunshine,

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact
Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace

If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this
can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous

Environment Centre.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental
Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils
state wide from sending these materials to landfill.

As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will
also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no
longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.

The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the
Council dump off South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the
Ewaste section.

You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip
depositing the card they issue you with. This card will
take you off their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.
Its nearly Christmas, dont panic!
In fact it is some way off, but plans are in place to make the
2014 Willunga Christmas Tree Festival one to remember.
A special feature this year will be the officially
commissioned poster.
This has been designed by artist Emily McAllan.
The design features the street map of Willunga and icons of
the past, present and future, our theme for 2014.
The poster will be used widely for the festival. The framed
original will be the prize offered for the peoples choice of
the festival.
Entries are now sought to submit a Christmas tree for the
festival.

Counting Collections
In our Year 6/7 homeroom we have been
exploring estimating and counting strate-
gies in Mathematics. We conducted various
investigations, using collections of all
different sizes and shapes.
Declan completed the 1 minute chal-
lenge. He counted his
collection in groups of 10.
Noah counted the amount of items on the top
and multiplied by the amount on the side to
estimate how many buttons were in the collec-
tion.
This group divided the counters up
and stacked into groups. They
worked out their own number of
counters by multiplying then added
their amounts together.

Then we experimented with some very large
collections! Here is a collection of lentils, after
a group counted 30ml of lentils, then meas-
ured out how many groups of 30ml they had.
This gave them their
final result.
Shubham used the scales to weigh the
popcorn collection. He counted out a
small amount, weighed them and then
multiplied by the total
volume of popcorn in the jar.

Much laughter came from the women bowlers of Aldinga
Bay Lawn Bowling Club when they recently enjoyed a re-
laxing foot spa and treatment, courtesy of local Arbonne
Skin Care Area Manager Leonie Hicks - in preparation for
the upcoming competitive bowling season.

Feet were scrubbed, massaged and moisturized with great
enthusiasm, and all agreed it was a great way to prepare
their feet ready for long hours ahead - on the green!

This is only one of the many social activities available for
the women bowlers, both social and pennant players. which
include morning teas, lunches and practice matches.

The Aldinga Bay Womens pennant side was successfully
re-formed only three years ago, after nearly 10 years with-
out any women bowlers, and the side has reached finals in
Division Three in both of the last two seasons in the Great
Southern Womens Bowling Association. This year several
new bowlers have joined the side and the club is looking
forward to continuing success on the green.

Other activities are also on the agenda to get the women
players ready for the Pennant season which commences in
mid- October - including a coaching clinic and practice
matches against Yankalilla and McLaren Vale.

The local lawn bowling club on Port Road Aldinga, caters
for men and women of all ages and levels of expertise, and
people are encouraged to come along to try bowls or sim-
ply enjoy a drink and chat in the friendly atmosphere of the
Clubrooms.

The very popular and friendly competition of Night Owls
bowls played under lights is also commencing soon, with
President John Clissitt calling for players to register their
teams early - there are a limited number of rinks available. Call

at 7pm from mid October.

This year for the very first time, Twilight social bowls will
also be introduced at Aldinga Bay Bowling Club on Wednes-
day evenings, during the months of daylight savings.

Players are invited to come along and enjoy the warm balmy
summer Wednesday evenings from around 6pm. Wearing
casual attire, and with either flat soled shoes or bare feet, enjoy
a friendly game with BBQ tea available from 6pm for only $3
per person.

"If I can - at 94 - then maybe you can too!"

How do you write a story about a nearly-95-year-old:
who was a circus acrobat, walked up and down stairs on
her hands, rode standing on horses and elephants, got RE
from a chaplin next to the lions' cage, is given to speaking
in rhymes, writes and recites poety, worked on Lancaster
bomber maintenance in UK during WWII, went through a
season of her life that she cannot for the life of her under-
stand how she made it, has a constellation of health issues
that would make most folk feel miserable; but puts it all
aside to do what she can for others - is active in the
Church of Christ and has been given a long service award
by the local nursing home where she's been cheering up
the "old people" for the last six years?

Well, with that record-breaking single sentence the story
is already told - all but what makes Mildred tick.

She used to pray to a name, a word. The word was "god".
That's all it was, a word. And she had faith. But it was
faith in faith i.e., faith in "something working out some-
how". That was when things were tough. But then as she
was washing up one morning Mildred saw the word
"F.A.I.T.H" appear above the sink and she watched
amazed as it was replaced by the word "G.O.D."

With that came the understanding that there really was a
creator, he had always been with her, she had never been
alone, he loved her and had a real purpose for her life.

It is this that keeps her diary full (I had to book up days in
advance), underlies her purpose, her sharp wit, great
sense of humour, and caring and uplifting conversation.
Mildred is self-sacrificing and an inspiration to many.

"Then maybe we can too" (at least if we're under 94)!

The Get Together Club
A new club has started in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.

The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.

It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was a
great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.

A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community Grant
from the City of Onkaparinga and is also supported by
Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and Disability
SA. New members are always welcome.

4 facts about flea allergy dermatitis

Your pet cant stop itching, but why? Heres a look at flea
allergy dermatitis (FAD), a condition your pet could be
suffering from, even if youve taken all the standard
precautions against fleas.

1. FAD is common.
Flea allergy dermatitis accounts for about 50% of all cat
and dog skin conditions reported to vets by clients.
Watch for scratching around the tail base, rear, and groin in
dogs, and scratching or crusty bumps around your cats
neck. Cats with FAD also tend to lick constantly, often to
the point of exposing bare skin.

2. FAD can affect your pet even if youve administered a
topical or oral parasite preventive.
Many of the more popular parasite preventives just do not
work well either not a 100% kill effect on the fleas, or for
too short a period. Fleas need to be killed quickly once a
flea has jumped onto your pet, theyll bite and have a feed
of blood and then theyll start laying eggs within two days
of that bite. They lay 50 eggs a day, which drop off into the
environment like the carpet, where they can hatch out into
a dormant stage and survive for up to 9 months before
jumping onto their victim.

We strongly recommend Comfortis tablets, for both cats
and dogs, when fleas are a problem. This is super effective
and kills 100% of the fleas on your pet within 2 hours,
sustaining this effect for a full month before the next tablet
is due. This is a vet-strength product and far superior to
supermarket products. Due to the long survival time of the
young fleas in the environment, you should treat your pet
for at least 12 consecutive months to fully eliminate the life
cycle from your home. You can also treat the environment.

3. Fleas arent always present with FAD.
You can search and search and come up empty. Fleas are
fast, and some pets have thick coats even a thorough
search can overlook them.

4. Your other pets wont necessarily itch.
Not all pets are affected with FAD. So even if youve
administered parasite preventives to all of your pets and
they all spend the same amount of time outdoors, one
might spend all day scratching his itchy coat while the
other remains unaffected.

Eating disorders...
There are many theories about how eating disorders develop.
Most research suggests that its a complex mix of cultural,
social, family, personality, and physical factors (including
genetics). In most cases, a person with an eating disorder has a
negative self-perception.

What to look for?
A person experiencing an eating disorder may:
have rigid patterns or attitudes around food and eating, such
as avoiding meals, excessive fasting or calorie counting, or
labelling food as good or bad
show evidence of binge eating, vomiting or laxative use
have excessive or obsessive exercise patterns
avoid questions about weight, or seem sensitive to comments
or criticism about exercise, food, body shape or weight
withdraw from social gatherings and activities
show physical symptoms such as weight loss or fluctuation;
fainting; sensitivity to the cold; changes in or loss of menstrual
patterns for females; swelling round the cheeks or jaws; or
damage to teeth from vomiting
express extreme body dissatisfaction or low self-esteem, or
have distorted body image
seem depressed, anxious or irritable.

Next steps...
If you think you may have an eating disorder, its important to
talk to an adult you trust, such as your parents, teachers or
family GP.

One of the best ways to help a friend if you think they may
have an eating disorder is to encourage them to talk to
someone who specialises in this area. Detecting eating
disorders requires specialised training that some general
practitioners (GP) or family doctors may not have. You could
support your friend to speak to a GP first, to obtain a referral to
see a specialist.

When speaking with your friend, choose a comfortable, quiet
and private place where you can talk alone and raise your
concerns. Its best to talk at a time when youre both feeling
calm and you can approach the conversation sensitively.
However, bear in mind that your friend may still respond
negatively or defensively.

The tide of life is sometimes very rough, but each storm
ridden through makes us a better captain of our souls.
No one grows old by merely living a number of years.
People grow old only by deserting their ideas.
Age stiffens the joints but softens the heart. No one grows
old by living - only by losing interest in living.
In retirement the tomorrow you worried about is better
than the yesterday. Some hearts like evening primroses,
open more beautifully in the shadows of life.
AGING:
If walking is good for your health, the postman would be
immortal.
A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, but is
still fat.
A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years, while a
tortoise doesn't run and does mostly nothing, yet it lives
for 150 years.
And you tell me to exercise?? I don't think so.

Just grant me the senility to forget the people I never
liked, the good fortune to remember the ones I do, and the
eyesight to tell the difference

Now that I'm older here's what I've discovered:
- I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.
- My wild oats are mostly enjoyed with prunes.

Willunga Farmers Market Choi r

audience from markets, the McLaren Vale
Festival, the Eco Village celebrations to the
Gala performance at STARS .
The female choir sings about food, wine,
