6 EOMPLEX ALGEBRAIE EQUATIONS
Often in actual occupational applications, formulas are used and equations are developed that
are complex These equations require the use of two or more prineiples
of equality and their
soiutions" For example, the equation 0.13x
-
4.73 (x +
6.35)
=
5.06x
-Z"gT
requirei a definite
step by step procedure for determining the value of x. use of proper procedure
results in the
unknown standing alone on one side of the equations with its value on the other.
Examples.
1. Solve for x

An equation Is a mathematical statement of equality between two or rnore quantities. An
equation always contains an equal sign (
= ).
The value of allthe
quantities on the left side of
the equal sign equals the value of all quantities on the right side of the equal sign. A fornrula is a
particular type of equation that states a mathennatical rule"
Because it expresses the equality of the quantities on the left and right of the equal sign, an
equation is a balanced mathernatical statement.
3lb+2lb+5lb=4lb+6lb
10lb=10lb
ln this topic, it covers a simple algebraic equation which involves only one operation and one
unknown.
5"1 Writing an Equations from Word Statements
It is important to develop the ability to express word statements as rnathematieal symbols or
equations. A problem nrust be fully understood before it can be written as an equation.
The following example illustrates the method of writing equations fron'l given word statement.
After each equation is written, the value of unknown quantity is obtained. No specifie procedures
are given at this time in solving for the unknown.
Examples
1. What weight must be added to a
'12
pound weight so that it will be in balance with a 20
pound weight?
So the answer is I pound of weight rnust be added to 12 pound weight so that the 20 pound
weight is in balance.
2. A length of lumber 12 feet long is eut into 2 unequal lengths One pieee is 3 times as long as
the other. Find the bngth of longer and shor'ter piece.
