Amanda Barrett is a happy, healthy breast cancer survivor.
Her journey began in 2007 after she found a lump, which turned out to be Stage 1
breast cancer. The Stafford resident, just 29 years old, eventually had a mastecto-
my.
During her ordeal, her young son Tyler helped her stay focused on getting bet-
ter.
I just kept thinking of him when I was going through it, said Barrett, 37, a
Relay for Life specialist at the American Cancer Society in Manasquan. He was
what made me do what I needed to do to take care of it.
Barrett is one of a growing legion of thriving breast cancer survivors in New
Jersey, thanks to prevention efforts, improved screening and smarter, targeted
treatments, according to physicians.
